The game takes place in a small mountain area, where Wienne meets a boy named Zack. The player then has to find a way to save them from a nearly inevitable demise. Failing to do so rewinds the game back, giving a chance to try a different solution.
"Wienne" features several ways in which the player can affect the flow of the story: choosing where to go, dialogue options, and magic. The latter allows the player to change where the story is going at any point in time, without any external prompts.
Apart from the branching story, "Wienne" focuses on building the fantasy universe it exists in: various details and stories are told in diaries and logs found throughout the game.
