Sargon II, also known as Sargon II: A Computer Chess Program and Sargon II Chess, is a digital chess game developed by Dan and Kathe Spracklen and published by Hayden Book Company for TRS-80 and Apple II computers in 1979.
An updated sequel to the game Sargon: A Computer Chess Program, released earlier that year, Sargon II features an updated AI chess engine with six levels of play and a hint (or "kibitz") system. Each play level corresponds to the time it takes for the opponent to determine its best option, from an immediate response, to times averaging in the minutes, to times averaging in the hours.
It later received ports for the VIC-20 in 1982 (released by Commodore (Company) as Sargon II Chess) and for both the Commodore 64 (Platform) and Atari 8-bit computers in 1983 (released by Hayden Software). The Apple II version later received a 1986-1987 release by Spinnaker Software Corp.
The game's AI was also used for some commercially-released chess computers, where it was known as Sargon 2.5.
