Players take the role of Vertin, a strange girl with a suitcase, as they try to rescue Arcanists and embark on a journey through time, all the while trying to find a way to stop a phenomenon simply known as "The Storm" that has been reversing time since the end of 1999.
As "The Timekeeper," Vertin is somehow able to resist the effects of The Storm and retain her memories, and as a result, Vertin finds herself in the center of a long battle between two great forces: On one side, the St. Pavlov Foundation, a massive supra-national organization that seeks to control Arcanists and stop The Storm for the betterment of humanity. On the other side, Manus Vindictae, a stateless Arcanist cult led by a mysterious woman named Arcana, who seek to accelerate The Storm and rewrite the world's history so that Arcanists reign supreme over humanity.
Players are able to select up to four Arcanists they control, each with two skills ("Incantations") and one Ultimate skill unique to themselves. Most battles are treated like a card game, where the player will start with a hand of 7-8 cards drawn from each Arcanist's deck. They can mix and match the cards as needed to launch attacks, gaining "Moxie" for each respective character's card being used. Furthermore, they can increase the rank of any skill by matching two of the same cards with the same ranking, up to three ranks, adding power to the standard incantation, and sometimes adding bonus effects that a standard rank-1 incantation would not have. The player can select as many cards as there are active combatants on the field. Once the cards have been played, the deck is shuffled offscreen and extra cards are drawn at random from the collected deck.
Once a character hits the maximum number of Moxie, their Ultimate skill will be automatically added to the player's hand, and can be played just like a normal card. However, the same applies for enemies as well. The battle continues until one side has been completely wiped out.
Outside of combat, players can build a hub world known as the "Wilderness," placing down hexagonal-shaped pieces that they own or have collected to create their own island, limited to a certain maximum amount of tiles. In the Wilderness, players can collect in-game currency, synthesize materials for character growth, or choose which characters they want to interact with to increase their respective Bond level.
