The Democratic People's Republic of Korea was founded in 1947, two years after the revolutionary Kim Il-Sung, alongside the Soviet army, drove out invading Japanese forces in 1945.
In 1950, South Korea led a U.S.-backed invasion of North Korea, which led to the Korean war. The Korean War claimed many lives and lasted until 1953, when U.S. forces were driven out by Korean and Chinese forces.
North Korea remains one of the world's last remaining communist states.
