Overview

Angkor Wat is a temple constructed by the Khmer Empire in the 12th century that became their capital. It is greatly revered by the Cambodian people to this day as a place of worship and for its cultural and historical significance. It is analogous to the Taj Mahal of India and other visually distinctive structures throughout the world in this regard.

Appearances in Games

  • A fictionalized version of Angkor Wat is one of the late-game dungeons in Quintet's Illusion of Gaia.
  • Angkor Wat is explored by Lara Croft during the intro level of Core Design's Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. The stage features a much younger Lara, accompanied by her mentor Werner von Croy.
  • Angkor Wat is one of the many Wonders the player can build in Sid Meier's Civilization V.
  • Angkor Wat is one of the backdrops in the original Pang, a.k.a. Buster Bros..
  • The temple that houses Mantorok in Silicon Knights' Eternal Darkness, which appears in Ellia's and Dr. Edwin Lindsey's chapters, is an immense temple in Cambodia built specifically to embody and entomb the huge Corpse God. Though not Angkor Wat - the temple is well-hidden deep in the Cambodian jungle and has only recently been discovered by a single archeologist (Lindsey) in the modern era - it is clearly based on the Wats of Cambodia, among which Angkor is the largest and best preserved.
