Some first-person shooters may include weapon bob to give the player the sense that they are actually a moving person, rather than a floating gun. Many early first-person shooters, such as Wolfenstein 3D had no weapon bob and it wasn't until the popularity of Doom that the weapon bob became much more pronounced.
The Call Of Duty series up until Call of Duty: World At War had no weapon bob; the gun simply sank down when the player moved. Recent DICE games such as the Battlefield: Bad Company games and the multiplayer in Medal of Honor have very pronounced weapon bob with the entire gun bobbing from side to side in a much more noticeable way.
