Overview
Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen Sandiego? is an detective-themed edutainment adventure game developed and published by Brøderbund Software for Apple II and IBM PCs in 1986.
The first spin-off of the 1985 game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, Where in the U.S.A. switches from world geography to regional geography, focusing solely on the United States of America. As with the original, players play the role of a rookie detective with the ACME Detective Agency, tasked with tracking down and apprehending members of the Villains International League of Evil (V.I.L.E.) and its leader, the titular Carmen Sandiego.
Like the original, the game includes a booklet (the Fodor's USA travel guide) that serves both as a useful guide and physical copy protection. It later received ports throughout the late '80s to the Commodore 64, Amiga, Apple IIgs, and Macintosh computers, as well as an updated VGA re-release for DOS PCs. Like the original, it received multiple revisions, including the 1992 "Deluxe" edition and a 1996 revision. It also received other regional variants, including Europe, Japan, and the U.S. state of North Dakota.
