The Wii Classic Controller is an accessory for the Wii that allows games to be played with a more traditional control scheme rather than the Wii's focus on motion sensing. When the Wii was first introduced, the motion-sensing capabilities of the Wii Remote were lauded for their potential to revolutionize interactivity between games and players. However, this method of control has its limitations, and many games designed to use more traditional control systems on other consoles could not be easily ported to make use of the Wii Remote. The Classic Controller presents a secondary option that for some Wii titles such as Monster Hunter Tri that serves the gameplay better than the standard Wii Remote and Nunchuk option.
Additionally, the Classic Controller is compatible with all games released for the Wii and Wii U's Virtual Console catalog of retro games. Similar to how the GameCube controller was still supported by select Wii games, the Classic Controllers are also forwards compatible with certain Wii U titles.
Classic Controller Pro
The Classic Controller Pro is a redesigned version of the original Classic Controller. Its main new features are wing-like grips to make the controller easier to hold, and the placement of the ZL and ZR buttons has been adjusted so that they rest below the L and R buttons, similar in nature to the L2 and R2 buttons on Sony's PlayStation controllers. However, the L and R buttons which were analog before, are now digital buttons. The analog sticks have also been spaced further apart to increase comfort. The Classic Controller Pro was released as a separate accessory as well as in special bundles with select games including Monster Hunter Tri and GoldenEye 007.
