Well, everyone here knows of Destructoid and their heavily opinionated, er, opinion of the Wii (except for that one rebel of a writer, who is not involved in this article). With that in mind, you can certainly imagine that this hands-on article of Wii Sports Resort, which happens to be the main testing ground for Nintendo's next big thing, the fabled and seemingly overshadowed in this E3 Motion Plus, will be full of snarky comments, exaggerations over any possible flaws and all sorts of witty derogatory remarks. Right? This is going to be entertaining, heheh!

Here are some notable quotes from the article:

How many mini games are there?
"Wii Sports Resort includes twelve sports events -- a huge step up from the five that were in the original game. And some of these twelve activities actually include sub-events, such as when you choose Frisbee and are approached with the choice of Dog Frisbee or Frisbee Golf. While both control similarly, they are completely different games. Because of these branching events, the total amount of sports in Wii Sports Resort jumps up to over twenty."

How is the basketball? It looked OK when Reggie played it.
"The controls in this game are brilliant. You just simply push B to pick up a ball (you don't even have to hold the button down) and then just gesture the Wiimote into the air just like you would throw a basketball. It is hard to explain without physically having the game to show you, but the Wii Motion Plus accessory is so accurate that you really have to shoot the ball like you would in real-life.
The whole experience just feels so fluid and really cool."

Hm, alright. What about the Frisbee then?
"I played this sport at last year's E3 (as well as Fencing and Jet Skiing), but it is worth quickly mentioning again. Basically, you grab a Frisbee and throw it towards a target so a ridiculously cute dog can catch it for points. There is not much to it, but, again, throwing the Frisbee is so accurate it is scary."

Okay, fair enough, but that's not the real test. Tell us about the sword fighting!
"What is truly revolutionary about this event is how the sword controls in your hands. You grasp the Wii remote with two hands (no nunchuck needed) and swing it around just like you would a real sword. But I swear, I kid you not, the sword moves in a 3D environment exactly as it does in real-life. And don't think that means just a simple waggle back and forth like so many other Wii games try to get away with. When using the Wii Motion Plus, the sword can be turned, pointed, even moved behind your back or under your legs and the in-game sword will do the exact same thing. Seriously. It is almost fun just to stand there before attacking and just marvel in the fact that the Wii remote and the sword move exactly the same. This perfect motion control can even be used to defend against incoming attacks by holding the sword in just the right place. It is such a cool thing."

Omg, this guy loved it! Read the full article here, feel free to discuss. Remember, this is technology you can get your hands on within this month!

I think with this Nintendo made a game that both the casual crowd and hardcore gamer can get into. Wii Sports wasnt precise enough, but it sounds like this entry is incredibly accurate, and that turns me on as a gamer.

The basketball one is te most interesting to me, and i hate the NBA. if it is really as sensitive as is being suggested, playing hoops with it would be flipping awesome! Loved watching Reggie pull out the win on the last ball.

Okay. Maybe it actually is better than I think it is. Makes me hope that the peripheral catches on, and that it sells well. After all, Miyamoto confirmed that the future of the device depends on how well the initial waves of titles do.

What games support it, as of now? The only new M+ (m+ only, actually) game from E3 is Span Smashers, right?

Also, lame thread is lame. I want to hear more hate and flame.

Span Smasher is m+ compatible only I think, another website mentioned going hands-on without m+ but perhaps only the demo had that?

Gladiator A.D. is compatible, The Grinder will utilise it for a character's melee weapons but it's not certain whether it will be optional or not. Suda has mentioned it for No More Heroes 2 on occasion, but it's not clear if it has been utilised so far after all.

I think Wii Sports Resort alone ensures a very strong opening. Iwata didn't say the motion plus' future will be determined by its sales, but rather that Zelda's future will be determined by the sales of motion plus. It makes sense you'd want the most people to experience your game when it comes down to a franchise like this, though to me it's also obvious he should simply bundle it and it'll be bought by every Zelda fan either way.

Anyway, I'm pretty confident this will do well.

Agent, what does Dead Space use it for? :S

Excellent demonstration video. I can't embed, just watch it. It's also streaming seemingly without buffering so have your connection available.

It's not working for me, but if it says "Wii Sports Risotto" at the end, those videos appeared on youtube 20 minutes ago as well.

But there's one thing I find reeaally strange right now.

I thought that when the archery demo was shown at E3, pulling the nunchuck back to draw the bow was just for show, like the "picking up" of the ball in the basketball demo (which is done with the B button), and that the actual bow drawing is initiated by the Z-button alone. Judging from the video above, though, I seem to be mistaken: It is actually made by drawing back with the nunchuck.
    I cannot really explain this.
The Nunchuck cannot detect slow horizontal motion. In fact I think it cannot detect slow motion at all, only rotation and, this information combined with the accelerometer, quick flicks in a general direction (though that detection wasn't always good).
I can only think of three possible explanations:
    1. The pulling of the bowstring animation is initiated the moment the Nunchuck is rotated even slightly in any way (very possible)
    2. The speed detection of the Nunchuck works in ways not a single game has used so far (very unlikely)
    3. MotionPlus does something to "enhance" how the information that comes from the Nunchuck is processed (extremely unlikely if not impossible)

Any thoughts on this? I'm confused.

@Meowayne: Option 1 seems viable, you never see him de-stress the string

I found it rather amusing that the presenter told him that he had to put the nunchuck in his right hand since it is his strength side.

We could eventually check of option 2 is possible via glovepie.

It wouldnt have been very fun as a button press. I have to think that motion plus "enhances" how the information is processed. We dont really know much about how it works yet, and the points you made are valid.

Okay, so, didn't Sky Crawlers use the nunchuck itself (rather than the analog stick on it) to steer the plane via tilts? That's relatively more advanced than I thought it could do. Perhaps this arrow deal is possible. I googled and came up with several references stating that the nunchuck is pretty much a remote minus the infared sensor. Wow? From wikipedia:

"Like the Wii Remote, the Nunchuk also provides a three-axis accelerometer for motion-sensing and tilting, but without a speaker, a rumble function, or a pointer function."

    Mystery solved.

Mystery not solved. That's what I said: Rotation (tilting) is very accurate. But if you don't tilt the Nunchuck and pull it back slowly, there's no technology in the Nunchuck to recognize that.

I am surprised that this was news to you. Of course the Nunchuck is the same as the 'mote minus rumble, speaker and IR.

I will likely get Wii Sports Island for the game and the M+.  Then I hope a  sufficient number of game that appeal to me are bundle with it, so I can complete the 4.  Trouble is I am not a massive sports fan.  Hell, I am barely a fan full stop.  I usually buy sports games for $10 just to have a go.  Still, I am very keen to see where this all goes.

If you're not a sports fan then why do you want four of these? I can't imagine 4-player will be very commonly used outside sports games. Hell, sadly it already isn't. I guess it's possible we'll eventually have games that require 2 per person but I find that a very distant possibility.

You will be able to move Motion+ with a high degree of accuracy within very deliberate constraints that serve to make the games challenging and fun. I think some people are expecting more freedom of movement than they'll actually get.

Your freedom will depend on the game. What matters is that the actual device appears to be very capable given its different uses here. How free games will be remains to be seen. All technologies have certain constraints, and are bound to be even more restricted to actually be practically used in video games. I don't think anybody has set their expectations too high, this article is certainly starting to hype me though.

Not at all ridiculous. It's a sad day when you can't have fun anymore. That doesn't come with growing up, but by other unfortunate events (bills :P).

Because I will at some point have sport games that play 4 people and I want to be able to use it.  I won't get them all at once, but rather, wait for good special prices.  4 player games do get a run in our house when they are available.

Poor you, having a wife and a couple-o-kids sure is expensive. Maybe you can get one of them returned? Are they out of their warranty?

Anyway, yeah, lotsa bundles will be doing the rounds, that saves you $10 per motion plus thingie, so $40 for all four!

Also, early games like Grand Slam Tennis work without motion plus too, so you can enjoy them anyway while building your collection.

Well my partner has RRoD 6 times and the warranty expired 26 years ago.  I tried to return one of the kids, but she wouldn't fit and it only angered my partner  ;-)

I do wonder what life will be like when I don't have the expense of children, then I remember how much I enjoy their company and how sad it will be when they go - I lose my gaming partners  :-(    I might have to go out and make firends and I don't think that will end well.

Meh, I wish we got more videos of these online, it's fun to watch people move that sword around seeing if it can replicate everything they do.

Here's that commercial I was talking about earlier Meo, it's been YouTubed now:

Wii Sports was pretty sweet at the time, this one seems to have about 5 times the content. Bowling alone will last quite a while. I read you have two options for controls in the events that require you to throw something, like the basketball (and I imagine bowling and frisbee as well). You can either have it so you just tap the B button to get a ball, then throw as normal, or have it set to "manual" so that you have to keep holding B, then release it during your throw at the time you want. The latter probably allows for more precise control of the throw and the former is simpler for newcomers. I thought it's a neat touch, I wonder what the other events have in terms of such options, if anything.

I've added this last video to the first post's top, it's a pretty sweet showcase of motion plus when it starts actually showing the player movements.

I am REALLY liking this. The skydiving intro sequence was cool enough (could've been the start of a Pilotwings game), and seeing that there isn't just one type of sport is cool. It's awesome that there is frisbee golf, accompying disc dog. Also, the different fencing modes are definetely cool as well.

But I'm especially looking forward to kicking back on the couch and spend a lazy afternoon flying a plane. Yeah, remember that plane demo back in 06 before the Wii launched? Yep, it's gonna be in this one, and I even got a Pilotwings vibe off of it.

DAMNIT, I WANT BOTH THIS AND A NEW PILOTWINGS!!!

    @addicted:
It does, it comes with a bundle too, but from the first hands-on impressions the sword fighting isn't as good as it is in WSR. Ubisoft needs to play this and copy it 1:1 (pun intended) for Red Steel 2's melee mechanics. I hope they improve it by release day because everything else looks great.

Reposting this vid for the second page, so it doesn't get completely lost in time:

Actually, I made several tests with a few games that use the nunchuck tilt, and I found that in 90% of the cases, you cannot help but tilt the nunchuck down when you draw it back like in the archery demo. Even if I tried to NOT tilt it and keep it perfectly horizontal to the ground, I still did.

I would now bet that the drawing of the bow is made by a little downward tilt of the nunchuck, so it would work without drawing your arm back.

Everyone needs to watch that trailer. It's the best showcase for the game yet.

It also shows very clearly how the bow drawing is nunchuck-tilt based.

Wow, 50 bucks for the game plus the motion plus? That's a pretty good deal. Still not getting a Wii till they release one in black though. XD

I'll wait for WSR myself, I'm not really able to afford tons of games and the EA titles haven't convinced me yet. WSR will be the benchmark for M+ use going by the E3 gameplay videos and all the hands-on impressions. There are some pretty good deals around though, that's cool.

A video showing many different events, but no player movements...

It's a bad quality stream but it's a surprisingly pretty title. The best examples are the waves in the wakeboarding event and the airplane stuff. Flight games usually have environments that only look nice from afar and up close it's all low-detail, smudgy textures, etc. Here it seems to retain the same detail as it has in the more "in your face" events and you can see it when he flies low, in the tunnel and the like. Good stuff.

I wish I had more space in my room to fully enjoy this, i'm still getting it but only for the jet ski game.

Also, this would be x100 times awesomer if it let you commit hara-kiri in swordplay.

    Great stuff. Can't wait.

I've come back from my little hands-on with Tiger Woods and Virtua Tennis, both non-MotionPlus. : D

Virtua Tennis is significantly more arcade-y, and LOT more forgiving than Grand Slam Tennis. It gives better instructions, but I found it harder to get the ball to where I wanted to. The game is also a great deal prettier, but it has to suffer a few frames for it. Judging from the non-MotionPlus controls, EA did a better job. Despite the art style, Grand Slam Tennis seems more of a simulation and Virtua Tennis is more of, you know, a videogame. I can imagine that the gap is even wider with MotionPlus.

Tiger Woods Disc Golf is probably THE place to go to for a MotionPlus showcase these days. Because the non-MotionPlus mode is also completely motion-based, it shows very impressively where the difference between the two is. It didn't last me very long: It was a mess.
Golfing itself was alright. Like Wii Sports with more options. Al3x is definatly right, though: This game desperatly needs more style.
Or maybe it was because I enabled the Weather-channel reading that the game was so bland. : |

Sounds like I need Motion Plus. Perhaps my faith in the Wii can now be restored.

No. If the last six months and the now announced games didn't restore it, the little plastic box probably won't help.
