So the first Wii U commercial went up in the UK in the past couple days, it shows a few of the features including the tv to controller transfer, and some basic touch screen gaming. I am not sure how to feel about the wii u in general, and this does not help. From the support I experienced with the wii, I don't have high hopes for the wii u. What do you think about this ad? Does it showcase what you think is important about the wii u, or is it something less than ideal for pushing a pretty risky console out?
Wii U
Platform »
The Nintendo Wii U, the follow-up to the monstrously popular Nintendo Wii console, launched in North America on November 18th 2012.
First Wii U commercial.
I like how the first thing in big bold text is "A brand new console." Nintendo obviously seems worried that people are still confusing it as a peripheral for the original Wii, and rightfully so based on what I've heard from more casual gamers.

Noticed that too, like they have to spell out that it's a whole new console before the actual commercial starts.

I don't think saying "a brand new console" will help, either, because the word "console" is too much of a gamer-jargon term: the person who's confusing it as a peripheral won't know or use term "console." It's just "the Nintendo" to them or "system" at best.

Hell, I am sure some of the Wii U's demographic will actually think console is a fancy word for the new controller. They need to try harder than this, or else it will be a crowd of apathetic Wii owners asking why this one is so much better. I honestly think they should have named it Wii HD or Wii 2, just to spell it out that this is the NEXT one.

I don't want to be the typical jaded gamer that shits on everything, so yeah .....

But Nintendo is making it too easy. It's a notoriously tough call to see how the wii u will do, but right now, it's like nothing is lining up for them. Really underwhelmed journalists that played demo games at previous conventions, some game developers literally waiting to see how it does in the first few months before they commit, strange pricing, apathetic online response, and NOW a bad commercial. It's too bad, because competition is good.

I like it. It's a clear tutorial that's not aimed at soccer moms and super-enthusiastic tweens, so I'm pleasantly surprised.
Still not sold, though. I'll wait for must-have games like I did with the Wii.
... I've never owned a Wii.
Heyoooooo.

I saw it last night. It's pretty horrid. Are you kidding its great. I wish we had British people in our commercials. But then again, I love BBC America.
Have you seen Dyson and Geico commercials?
@Dagbiker: Being British and hearing British people talk isn't all that exciting.(unless it's the real Brad talking) I'm far fonder of fake british accents by Americans. The dude voicing the advert is one half of Adam & Joe who had a TV show years ago which was awesome. It's kinda depressing to see the kind of things he does these days when the other half is off writing Tintin and directing Attack the block.

yo i hope this console doesn't run nintendo out of the big console game. its coming in at a weird time with dated hardware and not nearly as much buzz to the average consumer as the wii did.
I think about it this way, there is a next generation console coming in less than a month, and I don't see any buzz, that is the truly alarming thing. I really think Nintendo is smarter than what we are giving them credit for, but if they don't convince people why that screen gamepad is cool soon, this could be the next dreamcast.

This commercial makes me wish nintendo burns in hell, and I don't even hate them. (Or didn't, until I saw this.)
Not sure I'd go that far, but after seeing that ad, I went from having little interest in the wii u, to having none (for now anyway.)
That was pretty bad. They should have just gone all the way and made it completely ridiculous, like the Segata Sanshiro commercials for the Saturn. Then at least it might have some kind of odd appeal
Ouch, this is truly awful. Guys, I have this feeling that Nintendo might be screwed, slowly but steadily.
The commercial really made it seem like a toy and not the next big thing. I think going the apple way of marketing would have been a smarter move.
@GunstarRed: I don't know, they did pretty well with radio presentin and not to mention that now Adam Buxton's time mainly goes into his BUG tours and he does alot of music production and presenting. Joe Cornish is just Mr. Big Hollywood now is all. Everybody knows Doctor Buckles is better than old Scornballs anyway.
