It seems like before Nintendo releases any hardware, they come out and say "We've had this idea for a while now". Almost as if to say, "Look how inventive and forward thinking we are!". I'm pretty sure they claimed to be thinking of bringing back 3D back in the GC era. Maybe they should look at we were already are and take some lessons. How about them friend codes!
Wii U
Platform »
The Nintendo Wii U, the follow-up to the monstrously popular Nintendo Wii console, launched in North America on November 18th 2012.
Wii U Inspired By Original Concept for Wii Remote
The thing I've learned about Nintendo is that pretty much everything "new" they are doing now they already did before, probably in the 80's and only released in Japan. Such as the Famicom Modem or their ventures into steroscopic with Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally.

@zityz I doubt Nintendo is chuckling with 2011 losses 10x their estimate.
I doubt they are chuckling at the response so far to the Wii U.
I doubt they are chuckling at Microsoft encroaching on their gimmicky motion gaming segment.
I doubt they are chuckling about mobile phone/iPad gaming looking to take a huge chunk out of their hanheld market soon.

Right now, I'm leaning towards getting the Wii U, if it's priced like I think it will be.
I'm hoping the launch price is right around $299. I'm really looking forward to the Wii U, but if it retails at $399 I might think about waiting a little while.

Sadly, I think the WiiU is gonna fail. Yea, Nintendo is seemingly good at capturing the casual gamer market, but I think that it is too soon. People are still getting over the wii fad, and I don't think they are ready to drop a load of money on yet another system. As for the hardcore gamers... Well, Nintendo just doesn't seem to care about you and me. Seriously, Nintendo is on a downward spiral. This is just my opinion.
Funny thing is. People have been saying this since the N64. It makes me chuckle every time.
Not sure why you're laughing, since Nintendo has only had one industry leading home console since the N64. I guess it depends on your definition of fail.
I don't know a single human being excited or planning to buy a WiiU, but I knew tons of people excited to buy a Wii.
I don't expect them to fail really, but it is going to be hard to justify another Wii console after the first one dropped off -hard- with its lack of selection.
I'm really interested to see how this does once it releases, I suspect its going to flop, hard.
From what I have seen, all the casual folks who own a Wii are still content with their Wii, or would respond to the WiiU in the typical uninformed parent answer "We already have a Wii, and you never play with it!", which is stereotypical but true.
What made the Wii so popular was its motion controls, they were able to make adults interested in the product as well as the children, thanks almost exclusively to WiiSports. The WiiU doesn't look to be able to offer anything really interesting in that way. Another screen doesn't have that same hook, and that hilariously terrible golf demo isn't going to sell anyone.
I guess, the casual market seems still content with their Wii's because this update is coming too soon, not to mention it looks and sounds like a marginal update to the Wii, which isn't an easy sell when its a few hundred bucks. So I don't think they're going to get nearly as much of the casual market on board this time around. Although the Kinect sold extremely well, which might be another signal that the casual market is ready to start buying tons of electronic devices, though I suspect that is just because the Kinect was offering its own unique experience.
Actually, to look at it another way, Sony's Move didn't do amazing numbers because it was essentially a marginally improved Wii remote. The WiiU could be seen as essentially a marginally improved Wii.
I'm sure there will be some people that will disagree with me, and considering Nintendo's track record of generating fucking magic, the WiiU might still do amazingly. We still haven't seen the final product or any marketing, which are obviously important.
Also, I remember hearing Nintendo saying they're trying to focus more towards the Hardcore audience again with this console. FINALLY they listened to us and made that WiiU controller! Yes! And it looks like the WiiU is going to be a device dedicated to third party current gen title ports! Woohoo! Hardcore audience get hype!
Nintendooooooooo, don't fuck us! Please don't suck!
I honestly think the WiiU will do perfectly fine. People seem to have their heads in a box stretching as far as their own headroom. So; just because your perspective fails to see how ninty can do well, they will fail. Interesting!
Anyway, I wont buy a WiiU, I can't be hyped at all from whatever Nintendo has to announce. I have tonnes of friends like this but I also have friends that still get hyped about EVERYTHING Nintendo does.
Also, I think that it is hard for us to understand the mentality of kids these days! They will probably dictate the future of Nintendo.
Enough from me.
Elzar out.
The Wii U might be a decent stepping stone while waiting for the next-xbox if you are not keen on building your own new pc, as it should be a little more powerful than the 360 and PS3. Plus you get to play nintendo and 'real' games on this console (referring to most of the crap that mainly comes to wii). I may consider buying one. I'm not a fan of controller though.

Actually their losses were a little over 3x their estimate. Japan had some rough times last year and the 3DS did worse than expected initially. The 3DS is expected to sell at a profit within the first quarter of this year though and sales of that system are way up. They might not be chuckling, but I don't think they're all that bothered. They've still got a fucking ton of money built up from the Wii and DS.
Response to the Wii U by who? They haven't started marketing it yet, so there hasn't really been a response to it yet. I'd even say it's way too early to feel one or the other about the system, really.
The Kinect and the Wii are pretty different. You couldn't do a game like Skyward Sword on Kinect, for example. I don't think people are necessarily exclusive to one or the other. Nintendo certainly doesn't seem concerned, considering the Wii is still selling a fucking lot. The Wii U's new controller is something else entirely too.
Soon? Mobile phones and their apps are already pretty big, man. The 3DS and its games seem to be doing just fine, despite that.

From what I heard, they were expecting a 4.2 BILLION yen loss, and lost something like 45 Billion yen, so where did you get x3 from? I'm just curious.
Also, Nintendo ceratinly don't do things half-assed, even their losses are crazy!
I keep reading the headline as Wii UnInspired. I'm not joking, it's weird.
Hopefully they put some good games out.
@benspyda: Uh, I don't see why. Weaker consoles have won console wars in the past. It isn't like there would be much of a difference between the two anyway. The next Xbox is rumored to use a HD6670 and the Wii U apparently uses a HD4850/4870. There isn't a huge difference between the two, but the latter is definitely capable of doing more. We don't really need GPUs that can do more than either of those in the next generation of consoles.
