The Nintendo Wii is a home video game console released on November 19, 2006. The Wii's main selling point was the innovative use of motion controls that its signature Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers allowed for. It became the best selling home console of its respective generation of hardware.

I'm going to buy a Wii. I would like suggestions for the games to get. My favourite genres are:

    • (j)rpg
    • survival horror
    • action
    • hack and slash

    What do you suggest?

P.S.: I've seen the list posted in here in the forums, but it ends in 2010, and some great times did come after the list was compiled. So I ask this question.

Xenoblade Chronicles is a must-have JRPG. I don't know what its availability is like right now, though.

Lemme see, off the top of my head:

    • Mario Galaxy
    • Mario Galaxy 2
    • That one Zelda Game
    • That Other Zelda Game
    • People seem to really like Xenoblade...
    • ...and The Last Story, for that matter.
    • Pandora's Tower?
    • That version of Resident Evil 4 with the waggle
    • One of the lesser Fire Emblem games.
    • Just Dance so you can bring girls over and they can pretend to dance even though it doesn't really work all that well
    • The first half of Super Paper Mario. Or maybe the second half.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories would probably be the go-to when it comes to survival horror?

Dead Space: Extraction or whatever the name of that light gun game was?

A Boy and his Blob for something downright adorable?

    ... just look at this:

Mad Dog McCree: Gunslinger Pack. Three great/awful FMV shooters for your enjoyment. That may fit into your "action" category, but it's probably better suited to the "wonderfully dumb" category.

The Mario Galaxy games are great. Since you're looking for RPGs you should check out the Project Rainfall trilogy. And that chickenhead game? Oh yeah, Skyward Sword exists too.

Mario Sluggers is pretty fun. Especially with a few friends. There is a mode called Toy Field that isn't just "typical" baseball.

Pretty much all my tops are here. Metroid Prime is a great series, as well as Fire Emblem (though Radiant Dawn does have some real rough patches). Okami and Muramasa are both incredibly beautiful and pretty fun. Those Zelda games are good! I'm in the midst of playing Pandora's Tower and enjoying it fairly well, so give that a try.

Don't forget the gamecube games like Skies of Arcada and Tales of Symponia, Fire Emblem games on gamecube and wii, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance for gamecube, Shiren the wanderer and Rune Factory for Wii, Zack and Wiki(a puzzle game) and No More Heroes 1 and 2 for wii.

Edit : also you should hit up the eshop where you can get loads of classic Jrpgs and the like.

Edit : if you are into strange jrpg hyprid you could look up the anime inspired Sakura Wars : So Long My Love Strategy/Dating Sim. or perhaps the Strategy Jrpg Phantom brave for the wii.

Yes, it totally is. I keep seeing a used copy at multiple local Gamestop for around 60 bucks. They come in widescreen support, your always better off buying Gamecube games instead. Still, the metroid prime 3 controls are enjoyable.

I really enjoyed that game too and felt that it got too much shit from people. It really is a fun game.

I hear Little King Story is a great rpg.

IMO, Red Steel 2 was fucking phenomenal as a hack and slash action game and a great template for a lightsaber game that was never to be for the system.

No More Heroes 1 & 2 are definitely worth getting if you have a Wii.

Boom Blox 1 & 2 are terrific party puzzle games. Imagine playing Jenga where the goal is to knock down the blocks. Just reminiscing about it makes me want to play them again...

House of the Dead Overkill is my favorite horror arcade rails shooter for the system.

Overall, the Wii was a great system regardless of all the shit it got from people. Have fun with it!

    Let's go by category, then.

    • JRPG: Xenoblade Chronicles is fantastic, but difficult to find.
    • Survival horror: Not my genre, but Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was supposedly good.
    • Action: Zelda and the Metroid Prime Trilogy for sure.
    • Hack and slash: Muramasa and the No More Heroes games are your best bet. MadWorld gets an honorable mention.

Also, grab some Mario platformers, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn and yes, get Wii Sports if for some reason you don't have a copy.

Here are some games I'd recommend and why:

    • WarioWare: Smooth Moves is hilarious and really fun, though like all WarioWare games you can unlock all the Microgames fairly quickly and there's not much to do except beating high scores after that
    • Wario Land: Shake It! is actually a really solid platformer with gorgeous animation.
    • Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword - a lot of comments you're gonna hear about these are off-putting, but I loved them and I'd recommend going in without expectations and developing your own opinion. Also, pay no mind to Fi in Skyward Sword.
    • The Wii version of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. This game was originally made to be controlled by the bongo GameCube accessory, but the adjustments made make it a pretty good platformer with traditional controls. This was the first major game by the Mario Galaxy team, and believe it or not, it shows.
    • The Wii versions of Pikmin 1 and 2 if you haven't played them yet actually control really well and you should try Pikmin.
    • Castlevania ReBirth if you like old school Castlevania games. Only that though. It's great for that. You can't get it anywhere else.
    • Sin & Punishment: Star Successor is a great light gun game made by Treasure. It's made by Treasure.
    • Sonic Colors is pretty awesome at times for a 3D Sonic game, though the cutscenes are horrendous.
    • Metroid: Other M isn't a great Metroid game, but it's an action game I had a lot of fun with.
    • Super Paper Mario is a really odd mix of a JRPG and a platformer. I found the story really charming. There are few cool things about the gameplay.
    • Kirby's Return to Dreamland if u like kirby but also try epic yarn it easy but fun i had good time somtime boring
    • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Xenoblade Chronicles are two games I have every reason to believe are good but I couldn't tell you for certain because they're both ridiculously overpriced.
    • Mario Galaxy 1 & 2.
    • Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil. It's the Wii Re-release of the Gamecube remake of the original. There's no reason to get it over the Gamecube version really except maybe price, but it's good.
    • Donkey Kong Country Returns.
    • Mad World's a pretty fun action game.
    • Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom if you like either kind of fighting game.

With that out of the way, I'd also like to put out there that it'd probably be a better idea to buy a Wii U unless a) you want it to double as a GameCube (in which case you have to be careful now which version of the Wii you're buying) or b) money is a problem. The Wii Menu and everything is all there, with a couple added minor functions like being able to use the gamepad as a second tv.

Any particular reason why you're getting a Wii and not a WiiU (which can play all Wii games as well as WiiU games)? Is it to play Gamecube games or price or something?

I have good news and bad news. The bad news is, you're 8 years late. The good news is that that means that while we had to get our great games released over a 8-year basis, you've got all of the classics to yourself instantly. And boy, are there some good games there to play.

    • Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 (Seriously, the original SMG is my favourite game of all time by a landslide. You'd have to be mad not to play it)
    • Xenoblade Chronicles
    • The Last Story (Warning: It is REALLY short compared to other JRPGs. Still a great game, though)
    • Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
    • Punch-Out!!
    • WarioWare: Smooth Moves
    • Mario Kart Wii
    • Super Smash Bros Brawl
    • Rhythm Heaven Fever/Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise
    • Metroid Prime Trilogy (Just don't expect to get a copy that isn't pre-owned easily. You will crash and burn.)
    • Rayman Origins
    • Wii Sports Resort
    • New Super Mario Bros. Wii
    • Dalmatians 4, the Wii port of the critically acclaimed Dalmatians 3 for PS2. And boy, are you in for a treat

Oh, and as for survival horror, you can play Fatal Frame IV by using a patch on fatalframeiv.net that translates it and removes the region-lock on the game. And that game is supposed to be scary as fuck, so...

You don't need to buy a Wii console (although they are really neat little machines) in order to play most Wii games:

Dolphin has some pretty good compatibility stats these days:

    • Perfect: 10.3%
    • Playable: 71.4%
    • Broken: 1.0%

And yes, buy all of the games mentioned in this thread.

Don't bother with the Zelda games, they are a snorefest. Metroid Prime Trilogy is a good bet if you like the Prime series, I don't like them, though I like Metroid.

Some games that are not that great (not classics) but worthwhile if you're into the series:

    Dead Space Extraction
Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles
    Metroid Other M.

Thanks for the head's up! Although I've seen one at an whopping price of 80€ with all the peripherals included appart from the zapper, and some games (among them Wii Play, Wii Sports and Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess). It's kind of a bargain here. Almost all I've seen online are sold from 120€ upwards, so I get to play in one, plus if I want to sell again I'll probably make a profit on the console.

    @everyone:

Thanks everyone for your advices. I'll save this list for the games I'm going to buy.

In the game front, for now I'm going with:

    1. Fragile Dreams
    2. Xenoblade Chronicles
    3. Pandora's Tower
    4. Resident Evil Remake
    5. Resident Evil Zero

    But more will come eventually.

Metroid prime trilogy is a great deal even at 50+ dollars. Especially if you've never played the first two before.
