Overview
Pinball FX (not to be confused with the 2007 game of the same name) is a free-to-play virtual pinball collection developed and released by Zen Studios for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC (via the Epic Games Store) on February 16, 2023. The PC version was originally released as an Early Access title on March 31, 2022, and later received a Steam release on April 13, 2023. It later received a Nintendo Switch release on July 6, 2023.
The fourth main installment of the Pinball FX series (after Pinball FX3) and a name "reboot", Pinball FX features a new game engine built with Unreal Engine and includes most tables from Pinball FX3 (and its spin-offs) remastered with improved graphics and ball physics. In addition, it introduces a subscription system (Pinball FX Pinball Pass) and a customizable virtual room (the "PinHall").
While most tables from Pinball FX3 are brought over, players will need to repurchase all tables. In Early Access, they introduced a piecemeal pricing scheme while removing the concept of "table packs", which allowed cross-platform purchases; this was later removed in the full version.
It later received a spin-off for mature-oriented tables, known as Pinball M.
Gameplay
With the move to the new Pinball FX "reboot" most of the tables that were available in Pinball FX 3 were carried over, but with players needing to repurchase all tables. The only tables that did not make the move were The Walking Dead Pinball and Portal Pinball.
This reboot of the series moves the game to the Unreal Engine and upgrades the tables with improved graphics and physics.
Pinball Pass
A new addition to Pinball FX is called the Pinball Pass. The Pinball Pass is a paid monthly/yearly subscription service that allows players to pay a fee each month or year, with access to most of the tables that are released. Not all of the tables are guaranteed to be released for Pinball Pass subscribers due to rules with some licensors.
