Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru Gaiden ("Mashin Hero Wataru Side Story") is a 1990 Famicom RPG based on the Mashin Hero Wataru anime franchise. It features a young hero from this world, Wataru, who is teleported to the land of Sokaizan to become its legendary savior. He is joined by some friends and his own powerful "mashin" mecha in his adventures across Sokaizan.
Hudson used the rights to produce several tie-in video games for Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru, the first of which was a TurboGrafx-16 pack-in game known overseas as Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. The second was this game. Subsequent games were released on Game Boy and Sony PlayStation.
Though never released outside of Japan, the game would see a fan translation in 2013.
The protagonist of the game is not Wataru but a player-named side-character who witnesses Wataru getting captured by some strange knights. Wataru's sapient mashin, Ryuujinmaru, helps this nameless hero by fighting in battles on their behalf. Though the game resembles a standard turn-based RPG with the usual top-down perspective, it's actually an action-RPG: the player actively attacks their foes as Ryuujinmaru during real-time battles which instead use a side-scrolling perspective.
