Overview
Shock Wave, known in-game as Shock Wave: Invasion Earth: 2019, is a sci-fi flight combat game developed by The Advanced Technology Group and published by Electronic Arts for the 3DO on June 27, 1994. It was also included as a pack-in game for Creative's 3DO Blaster PC add-on card alongside Gridders, and was a pack-in game for Goldstar's 3DO consoles.
Set in the year 2019, Shock Wave puts players in the role of a rookie pilot with the ensign "Wildcard", as they help repel an alien invasion of Earth with their spacefaring F-177 Heavy Fighter. The game features live-action full-motion video, both for cutscenes and for the HUD.
The game later received an expansion pack in 1995, known as Shock Wave: Operation Jumpgate. It is unique for the system in that, although sold as a separate product, players require a save file of the original game in order to play the missions. It later received a sequel the same year, known as Shock Wave 2: Beyond the Gate.
Both the game and its expansion were later bundled together for the Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Windows PC conversions in 1996 as Shockwave Assault. In Japan, however, the game and expansion only received separate PS1 releases, and the original game received a Pippin release.
