Jump’n Bounce is a kick back to the 80’s where gameplay was the main focus of games and not the visual extravaganza. In Jump’n Bounce players will take control of a not so very happy looking Pac-Man like ball called Hug. If you see what it needs to get though to get to the finish which is symbolized with a star, you will probably have the same look on your face. One thing this game does not lack is death, Hug will have to face spikes, enemies of all shapes and sizes and the most important: Gravity. I bet Hug is silently cursing at Newton every chance it gets.

There is something strangely familiar about this.

The goal of the game is help Hug reach the end of the level without dying, this might sound easy but there is a twist, Hug cannot stop jumping and bouncing. Players will always have to be one step in front of what Hug is currently doing to see if the path is safe or not, one false move and splat it goes.

The game is very generous when it comes to ease the players into the game and then slowly ramping the difficulty up to “I’m about to throw my controller out the window”, but at the same time it has the pull where just have to complete the level that is giving you a hard time just so you can laugh at the game because you outsmart it.

     That is just devilish

Control wise this game is simple, it really is a 4-button/direction game. Left and Right movement to move Hug around the map, a double-jump feature to give some extra height on the jumps and a smash. The smash will help players jump lower, to be able to fully use this some button mashing is needed, the smash attach will also smash blocks (You didn’t see that one coming did you?) so that power-ups and/or other paths can be reached.

All in all there are 50 levels in the game with an additional 10 “pro” levels that one should only try out if they are really good at the game or sucker for punishment. And if you have beaten everything the game has to offer, here is some good news for you. DeRail Games, the creators of this devilish game are planning to make more games featuring Hug, so stack up on controllers while you can.

You can get the game at the Microsoft Marketplace.
