MS Bans 1 million XBL users and their consoles

" Wow didn't know there were so many pirates on consoles. "Yeah, that's kinda crazy. that's 1/20 of all live users according to that article.
Actually more like 1,000,000 x $300 per new Xbox 360 sold + all the paid DLC the pirates can no longer use that MS gets. Oh yea, and some of those pirates will probably say 'screw it' and start buying games legit.1,000,000 x $10/month = $10,000,000/month MS just deprived themselves of. They're taking piracy seriously, do you believe it now?
That's about as funny as when StripClubDJ had his erroneous Gamerscore reset to zero. Anyone remember that or is that just me?

I remember that. Although I got nothing against pirates.
ha that is great. one million people is a lot of consoles. $300 (average of the consoles) * 1,000,000= $300,000,000 + DLC of money. that is a lot of people still. i kind of hope that people still pirate just so people will stop making PC piracy so bad. piracy is bad but 360 is even worse seeing as it is a console.

Launch console
replacement console- warranty expired - RROD
purchased other 360 - GPU failure - warranty expired........5 days before it failed
now i just got an arcade on monday, because after xclamp fixing my gpu failure console numerous times it just died
i reallly really hope my new console doesn't fuck up....i am getting sick of this
My general manager was one of the ones who got his console banned. To clear one thing up, this isn't a ban of the Gamertag but a ban on the console itself, if Microsoft suspects its been modded to play pirated games. In my boss's case, his 360 broke. He sent it in for repair, and about three weeks after they go it they informed him that he was in fact going to have that console banned from Live. Granted, I believe they're sending it back to him (its his property, and technically they can't prove with just the hardware he's actually pirated anything) so he could just keep playing stolen games, just not online with that console.
Hey, I'm not lobbying for pirates or anything--piracy is a problem--but to call this justice is a laugh. The failure rate of the 360 had been so bad for years that it's likely EVERY SINGLE ONE of those pirates had multiple systems die on them, or their system fuck up some games they spent $60 for. Or maybe, like me, they've had 4 recharge kits die after about 2 months of normal use. Or they spent $100 on a harddrive without enough storage only to have to buy another for 100 in a year's time, or $100 on a simple wireless receiver. The list goes on and on. I hear big companies complain about piracy and preach about digital download only to release Games On Demand games for MORE than I can buy them in the store for new (many games are 30 online, but only 20 new at retail).
Like I said, I don't advocate piracy, and don't pirate anything myself, but it's funny to read gamers cheer for big game companies as they're getting fucked in the ass themselves.

"Both your gripe with Microsoft at large, and the justice of banning pirates from XBL, seem mutually exclusive. One doesn't justify the other.
I feel the need to point out a few issues with this math:" 1,000,000 x $10/month = $10,000,000/month MS just deprived themselves of. They're taking piracy seriously, do you believe it now? "
1. No one pays 10 bucks a month for X-Box Live. I believe the highest price is 8.99, which is yes, a dollar off, but that's a difference of one million dollars a year. That's me being a stickler, but more important is...
2. It isn't Gamertags that are, on the whole, being banned, but consoles. Case in point: my boss, who was banned, is borrowing a friend of ours 360 and is able to sign into his profile just fine. He's able to pay for his account, access it and transfer it to new hard drives just fine.
In fact, if you wanna get mad conspiracy theory on this, a happy accident of all this is that all the caught pirates now each have to pay a minimum of 199 dollars for a new 360 to play all the games they've bought (though I suppose because they're pirates, that might not be much.) So there you have another 199,000,000ish dollars of revenue stream this holiday cycle...
But surely, that has nothing to do with this timing.
i kind of hope that people still pirate just so people will stop making PC piracy so bad. piracy is bad but 360 is even worse seeing as it is a console. As bad as it is, PC piracy is far worse. Proportionally and sales wise. A PC game will sell less, and have a higher percentage of pirates. Finally, MS can do something about piracy on 360, as they probably just chopped off 90% of the pirate population, forcing them to pay more money to MS (at least) to even play games.
" @Fbomb: I never said those gripes justify piracy. Gaming is not a necessity for survival so it's not like they were stealing bread and water. The main point was that it's bizarre for me to see gamers root for this as justice. "Okay, point taken. I think people root for it, because they've spent $60 of their own money for each of the games they play, and yet, others out there are playing for free and rubbing it in everyone's faces. It feels like a win, when everyone has to pay the same amount for the chance to play games. I don't think many people are so much cheering for the companies' moral victory, but for the satisfaction in knowing that their purchase value isn't being diminished by people who found a way to cheat the system, pay nothing, and still get the same privileges as a paying customer.
"Haha, nice link... seriously, this guy steals thousands in video games and decides to play the victim??
This is the best. lol

" @Webby: Hahaha. OH I love it. He complains about getting, says he doesn't know when then at the end freely admits he paid money to get it chipped and pirated about 40 games. Oh man. "And his justification is that there are too many good games?
If it makes him feel any better, I'm guessing all of his fellow pirate buddies got banned too. They can all sit at home, staring at their bricked consoles in unison...
Well... online anyway. A pirate is still able to play all of the offline games they want. It's a partial victory, anyway.Yea I guess that's true, if they're going to revoke DRM, not allow connection to Live, and not allow HDD installs, why not just disable the whole thing?

My friends and I exchange games alot. Its a great way to play most of the games out there, but I still end up spending alot on XBOX related shit
That's hilarious. I agree that games here are definitely too expensive, but if you can't afford to play them you can simply wait a few months and buy them when they're going cheap. Many new games are dropped to the £20 range fairly quickly these days. The fact he's the one feeling betrayed for stealing these games is a little sad, and the fact the BBC don't really point out that he's doing anything illegal is pretty bad as well. I'm not sure why he thinks jumping to the PS3 is going to help the problem." @SonicFire said:

He won't get banned, but what's he going to do when he realises he can't pirate games and actually has to pay money to play them legally?
@TwoOneFive said:
" did they get refunds? lmao. This is why PSN is free folks. "
I don't understand this at all. Would somebody who robbed from a supermarket get a refund, because they bought something from there previously?
PSN is free, simply because they couldn't justify having to charge for it. It's been vastly inferior to XBL up until more recently, and then only because they've copied practically every feature.
That aside, if it were possible to hack the PS3, you can bet your life they'd be banning people in the same fashion.
