In other home-based SCART-connected video system console gaming computer news...
Microsoft revealed today that it has sold more than 750,000 Xbox 360 consoles in the US on Black Friday weekend. Despite being seven years old, the Xbox 360's strong Black Friday sales follow 22 months as the top selling console in the US, according to NPD figures. While the sales are impressive, Microsoft managed to sell more than 960,000 consoles in the US during the week of Black Friday last year, with 800,000 sold within a period of 24 hours.
Microsoft now faces increased competition from Nintendo's Wii U console, which debuted in the US earlier this month. The Wii U sales surpassed 400,000 during its launch week, with the original Wii still commanding 300,000 sales. The surprising spike in sales for the Xbox 360 comes shortly after the release of Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II, both popular titles this holiday season. NPD sales data will be available in early December, which will determine the top performer for November, but it looks like Microsoft will likely hold on to its bestselling record, for now.

Well...yeah. The 360 is a 7-year-old console with a massive library and was probably cheaper thanks to Black Friday sales. Not really a fair comparison.

Exactly. The hot console at the store I work at was the $150 Xbox Skylander bundle.
So yes, the 360 outsold the Wii U while costing almost less than half the Wii U's price. Not a really fair comparison at this point.

How is that "pretty awesome"?
Because the Xbox is awesome, and I'm laughing as Nintendo burns in flames. :-) Last Nintendo console :P
Uhhh.
They even say it in the Bombcast. 500 people playing Black Ops II on the Wii U vs 700,000 on the Xbox? How's that look to 3rd party developers? Or the fact that developers have come out and said they won't develop for the Wii U because they'd have to downgrade their games (http://www.polygon.com/2012/11/21/3674818/metro-last-light-will-not-come-to-wii-u-due-to-its-horrible-slow-cpu? Wii U's are collecting dust on store shelves everywhere right now, it's a lovely sight. The Wii will outsell the Wii U this holiday season.)
360 is obviously cheaper, but its is practicably the same hardware as Wii U spec wise without a tablet controller. Heck most of the games on Wii U right now are shitty ports of 360. Yes, I know that Wii U tablet is the reason for the higher price, but at the end of the day consoles are used to play games. If two pieces of hardware play the exact same game, obviously people are going to go buy the console that plays the game better and is cheaper.
To me Nintendo has done very little to justify paying the higher price for a Wii U, the tablet controller might be utilized in some cool ways down the road, but I don't see why I need to have it right now. I guess if you are really fighting over the TV and stuff its kind of cool to have, but I got a tv in my room so meh. Lets hope Nintendo's game down the line can justify the Wii U.
It means little more than that the demand for the WiiU is currently weak, which we already knew by the fact that the original Wii sold about 2/3 of the WiiU last week as well. Costs aside, one would expect that a launch console with a lot of buzz would do better. But in general this doesn't mean much given the price difference. However, it does mean that Nintendo's new console isn't all that appealing compared to the current generation of consoles.
There are any number of reason for this: that Nintendo hasn't convinced hardcore gamers, who are still going for the 360; that Nintendo's launch game lineup is weak; that the price is too high in a shitty economy; etc. We won't really know what's going on for a few months--probably not until after the holiday season.

@AndrewB: I'm just experiencing abject sadness. : (
Only thing I can't understand is that, even in my adolescent years fighting for every new game and game console, being jealous of people who owned more and newer stuff, I never wished for a console to fail. The Wii U might not be the best designed from a hardware *or* basic OS/software level, but there's already some good stuff there and it has promise. Or at least, it would have promise if it didn't have the stigma attached to it.
But it *is* pretty surprising that the 360 seems to have the lasting power of the PS2. I wouldn't take away from that.
All well and good, but the Wii-U sold 80,000 more consoles in its launch week than the 360. More impressive I think, especially when you consider the marketplace confusion the Wii-U caused.
Wii U made a cheap system that is less powerful than a 360, they can't even get menus right. Every 360 sold out when they launched, Wii Us are just lying around.

the 250 gb is 249 in Canada still so the price isn't really that much cheaper. but you are right.

Uh wrong. Horribly wrong in fact, the PS2 is a monolithic titan and only nostalgia fueled SNES arguments even scratch it. In terms of retail releases there's something like 3-4 times as many PS2 games as there are 360 games and it more than doubles the 360's lifetime sales.
And so it begins. I guess we can expect a regular flow of fanboy- created threads dedicated to bashing "lesser consoles" from now 'till 2014.
Sure but price is most definitely a factor. I'm willing to bet the ps2 sold more than the ps3 or 360 in the months those 2 came out at@Sackmanjones said:

So this is actually quite a surprise, I mean wouldn't everybody who wanted a 360 have a 360 by now?
Seven year console cycle means plenty of time for old ones to break.
I understand why people feel the need to defend nintendo in their launch, but come on now. Almost a MILLION xbox360's after 7 years? That shit's impressive. I don't even know a single person who doesn't already have at least one xbox360 in their household. I am completely and utterly blown away, regardless of the comparison to the soft-ish launch of the WiiU.

I think it sold that much last year. I think you greatly underestimate how many people there are on the planet vs. how many of those people have consoles. I know quite a bit of people without a 360 or even a modern console.

What the... what? I... thought we'd left such awful child-like attitudes over on the system-wars forums :(
At least there's enough sense-talkers here trying to put you in your place to remind me that you're still the minority here. Whew.
But uh, on topic here...
The WiiU. It's not great. They took so many wrong turns with that thing, I'm honestly not surprised that it's not selling exceedingly well. However, I'd never wish them to go out of business... They've done so much in the past, and they've got such great potential, it's only a matter of time before they make something truly great again, even if NSMBU isn't it. Overall, it's good for gaming that Nintendo exist. Ugh.

And if we aren't talking about quality it doesn't seem like Nintendo did a great job raising awareness for this thing. Or even giving enough information about what it even is to the non-enthusiasts.
Like others have said, it's obviously not a fair comparison at this point, although all industry projections and a little informed observation support the likelihood that the Wii U is going to significantly underperform relative to the Wii. However, your gleeful prediction that this is the end of Nintendo as a console manufacturer is just a fanboy delusion. Most industry analysts predict the Wii U will push around 50 million consoles total. Well under the Wii, but also way over the Gamecube. And despite some hiccups getting the 3DS going, it is going, and it's going to be fine. Sorry, they're not going anywhere.
I'm just hoping some HD Zelda turns Nintendo around. If the next Zelda ends up being as great as I'm hoping it is then I will probably pick up a WiiU for it. Don't fuck it up with motion shit Nintendo PLEASE.
