This would probably be okay if they announced some kind of additional services that would justify the $10 price increase. It's not that big of a deal for me because you can get the cards for much cheaper if you buy online anyways.
On another note, I feel bad for Major Nelson because you know MS sent him out to be slaughtered by the internet. I'm sure he's not happy about delivering the news but it's his job to take the abuse. Sucks to be that guy today.
Microsoft Raising Xbox Live Subscription Cost
M$
seriously, why do they need MORE money?!
PSN is still free, so what the fuck is all that money for?!
They have been adding services. Not that I use them, but technically there is more available now than when it launched. Parties, avatars, Facebook, Twitter. That is all new. It's not like the service has been dead static. I'm still opposed to it, but it is an evolving service.

I'm just gonna keep playing my Steam games online for free-zies.

Try reading all the words." People really need to calm down with this announcement. While yes, it does suck that Microsoft is now charging more, it's $10 a year. If you can't afford that then you shouldn't have Xbox Live in the first place. Plus, everyone should wait and see if Microsoft adds any new features to the service on November 1st to justify the new price. No matter how it goes however, I'm Canadian so I don't have a price increase :P. "
" Microsoft will increase the cost of Xbox Live subscriptions in the US, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom"
That word between US and Mexico is Canada. You know, where Canadians live. The place you said you lived.
" @baron_calamity said:I call BS, I've gone from gold to silver and back a few times with no such hassle. If you go to your account and mark it to not renew, you will automatically go to a silver account. You can then go back to gold at anytime for however long you want, then mark it to not renew again." What happens is I switch my account from gold to silver? "Back in 2008 I tried doing that and they said that it was impossible. If I don't pay, either my account will continue to be suspended or I would have to cancel my account all together. Basically creating a new account. I don't know if it's different now, but that's basically what happened. "
UK monthly subscribers paying £5.99 a month? Time for you to jump to an annual subscription - monthly will set you back £71.88 ($111.80) across the year, whereas the annual price isn't due to change. Just looking at Amazon online, you can grab it for just £32.99 ($51.31), and you should find similar prices elsewhere.
I can happily forfeit Super Street Fighter IV on Xbox Live in exchange for never fucking paying for Xbox Live Gold again. It may only be "ten dollars", but it's action of what they're doing more than the actual amount.
I had already given up on Xbox Live Gold for the most part, but this is just the fucking nail in the coffin.
And we aren't even close to being done. This holiday, Xbox LIVE is adding new Gold features, including ESPN and Video Kinect, with Hulu Plus coming on Xbox LIVE in 2011. |
• | With ESPN on Xbox LIVE, you can stream and watch over 3,500 live and on-demand sporting events plus highlights.* |
• | Video Kinect allows you to chat with family and friends on the big screen, right from the comfort of your living room—no headset or controller required.* |
• | With Hulu Plus on Xbox LIVE you will be able to enjoy a customized Hulu Plus experience that will include Kinect navigation and Xbox LIVE Parties* |
" I like how the Article forgets to mention the 12 months subscription stays the same. WAY TO GET DEM CLICKS GIANTBOMB. "Ummm... Wha??? I think it's pretty clear from the screencap in the article that the 12-month subscription went from $49.99 to $59.99... I mean, all you have to do is look at one column, and then look at the other.
I hope you were talking about something else, because if you were really trying to complain about this, you failed.
Its still only the price of a single xbox game I have no problem with it as a yearly sub. I get plenty of content and great xbla exclusives so I have no issue.
Yes and they are raising the price of monthly subscriptions in Canada, not yearly subscriptions. I pay by the year.
I also really hope that no one who has responded negatively to this news post has ever subscribed to an MMO. Paying $15 a month for one game and then complaining about an extra $10 a year for Live is absolutely ridiculous.
not sure how they can justify upping the cost, especially in Canada - where to my knowledge, both Hulu and ESPN won't be available.

I'm quite shocked that they can possibly justify this price increase - particularly for regions like mine (Canada), where we don't even have access to things like Netflix over XBL, and we won't have access to the new ESPN service either.
All Major Nelson says, is that he's confident XBL still provides " the best value in the industry", but provides no specifics as to how it does this. If it weren't for the fact that I needed a gold subscription to play online, I wouldn't pay for XBL at all.
I just don't understand where the additional $10 in value is coming from. Of course, that is based on the flawed assumption that MS are doing this for any reason other than "because they can."
I think I'm done with paying for XBOX Live, and I hope a lot of other people reach the same conclusion. I barely ever use my XBOX as it is, but this seals it. This is a huge slap in the face.

What does Xbox live provide, that justifies the price increase that no other free service already offers?
This really sucks for people who only play occasionally. If I only get around to playing battlefield or whatever once or twice a week, I still have to buy a one month subscription to do that. So 50 dollars a year was already kind of a lousy deal. Now it's an even worse deal. Maybe it's time to upgrade the PC...

So you guys are mad because you're now paying what Canada has been paying since the start? despite our $ being the same or higher than yours for the past few years. Not to mention we pay an Extra 10$ on games for no reason.Seriously Americans can you be anymore retarded when it comes to getting made about price.
So I say again but lemme refine it.
I like how the article fails to mention that all this is doing is making Americans pay the same as Canada in terms of the 12 month.
GOTTA GET DEM CLICKS

" Wombat from Cheap Ass Gamer said it best: "In case you forgot, Microsoft hates you." ....Man, I know it's only $10 more and some of our international friends pay out the nose for the LIVE service already, but this leaves such a bitter, bitter taste in my mouth.
I don't know, I still think the service is well worth the sixty bones. I've never had a problem with the service and even on the off chance there IS a problem they have sent me a free game. Also, anyone who is deal-savvy can find 1 year subscription cards for anywhere from 25 to 35 bucks during the year.
If I'm set to auto-renew on November 14th and I buy the renewal for 40 dollars, does that change my renewal date to the day of purchase or does it go into affect on November 14th?
Oh hey, here's Modern Warfare 2, on the computer - with matchmaking. With no 60 dollar subscription service. I'll. Just. You know. Go there.
And while I'm at it, I'll play Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Bad Company and everything else that the PC has for free - including GAME ROOM. Yes, even Xbox Live's shitty arcade system is available to the PC players for free.
