So, one of the big things to come out from the Microsoft E3 2017 press conference in the last couple of hours is the announcement that they're adding backwards compatibility for original Xbox games (The original console from 2001). I loved this announcement, and find it fascinating that MS now has a console that can run THREE generations of Xbox games! If they add Xbox Live back to these titles, it'll be an amazing feat.

While we don't know what games will be available at launch, we do know that Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge will be one of them. What games would you like to see come to Xbox One?

Crimson Skies was my number one., but they already said that was coming I am just a little worried they won't restore the online.

This could be a tough one. The two big things to look out for (besides stingy publishers) are non-videogame rights and online. We don't know if they will flip the switch on old Xbox Live or have figured out some solution to run old Xbox Live games on current Xbox Live. They did not say that the games would have online so I am inclined to think they won't. That service is dead and there can't be sufficient margin to put it back on.

Non-videogame licenses are another sticking point. Midtown Madness 3 has licensed cars. Do those licenses permit downloading a new copy for backwards compatibility (which is how BC will work)? Probably not? Maybe? I don't know, it depends on how it's written. They also might have expired altogether. If Forza Horizon's licenses were only good for 4 years who knows how long Midtown Madness' were for.

Games with licensed soundtracks or cars are the least likely to be permitted, other than those with proprietary peripherals (do NOT expect to see Steel Battalion). Old sports games, for example, are probably not happening. Music games are probably not happening. And games with licensed cars are probably not happening. Though Midtown Madness is a Microsoft game so maybe they will try to re-acquire the licenses. They have deals with all those manufacturers for Forza, I think, so maybe they can just say "come on, throw in renewals for these old cars for our old game" and maybe it will happen. But I would guess not.

Even more than the cost, the licensing stuff is a ton of work. You need to figure out what licenses existed, how long they were good for, format limitations, and then if you need to renew them you need to chase down the license holders. For games that might be 15 years old that's just a ton of labor. This is mostly a PR thing, I doubt backwards compatibility is particularly profitable for them (outside of Black Ops II, which made them a few ducats) so having lawyers spend dozens of hours researching and negotiating on TOP of the technical costs is probably prohibitive.

I would be completely shocked if it didn't. So long as you update your system you should get the feature.

I also find it very unlikely that Capcom will relicense those games for backwards compatibility rather than trying to resell them as digital downloads.

I guess it's possible the Xbox One will play games right off the drive, in which case disks could work for everything, but I also think that's pretty unlikely.

I'd have to imagine the games that they might start with are the ones that they already have backwards compatibility on the 360. Not because of the work they did on getting those to work (if anything its much easier to port from Xbox -> Xbox One since they are both x86 based machines), but because they already did some work on the licensing.

I certainly agree with what most people are saying so far, but I'll add Phantom Crash as I wonder if that game is as good as I remember it being.

Ninja Gaiden Black. (still the best version) The SSX, Burnout and Tony Hawk games would also be nice. (since the best of those games were from that generation)

A common OG Xbox story. Happened to me twice with KOTOR II. It was the disc drive both times. I think they repaired it the first time with gun and bailing wire but they still charged me. And they wiped my hard drive.

Yes to SSX, Burnout, and Tony Hawk. I used to have SSX 3 on GameCube but lost it somehow. Would love to go back to it. I also never played KoTR, so this would be a good excuse to do that. Same with Morrowind.

I would love to see the original Star Wars Battlefront games but something tells me EA is not going to be on board with that with the new series being a prominent part of their line-up.

Shrek. This is the only og Xbox game I have played. It was at a kiosk in a Kmart.

Man, when I saw this thread I thought it would be FULL of people excited to play Panzer Dragoon Orta again. I have been secretly hoping Microsoft would partner with Sega for a Panzer Dragoon collection for YEARS. But instead everyone wants to play a bunch of licensed titles that are unlikely to come to backwards compatibility unless emulation can be done off the disc, for licensing reasons.

Orta is one of the most beautiful games on the OG Xbox with one of the best sound tracks, and is a really good Panzer Dragoon game to boot. And yet it seems it is mostly forgotten.

I feel really really old right now.

It's a weird one. There are a few old gems I'd love to be able to revisit on my Xbox One, but I can't imagine being very attractive to a large audience with Xbox Live being dead on that platform. Maybe they'll revive it? But that seems like a pretty tough wish to fulfill.

TimeSplitters 2 and Future Perfect are old favorites though, and have solid offline offerings that I'd be happy to show to friends who never played those games.

I wonder if this means I can play my OG Xbox version of GTA San Andreas that I bought digitally on Xbox 360. I don't like the new version that they sell now because half the songs on the radio are missing and it felt buggy when I played it. That would be super cool.

Also, Def Jam Fight For New York please. They don't even have to worry about licensing because it's just making the old game work again.

And KOTOR and Amped would be cool.

I just want to play Ninja Gaiden again.

And Maybe Jade Empire.
