Still busy with it. I just did my first mission that went sour. One dead, 5 captured. All my fantastic gear gone. Supposedly, a mission pops up later where I can rescue the captives. I hope that will be soon. I'm running on a skeleton crew now without any useful items.
XCOM 2
Game » consists of 4 releases. Released Feb 05, 2016
The aliens have won and the remnants of XCOM must strike to take back the Earth in this sequel to Firaxis' 2012 reboot.
How'd your first Iron Man run go?
It was very early into my run. Last night my troops were on a mission to destroy one of the alien transmitter beacons. 2 turns remaining. Still in concealment, I had 3 guys perched on rooftops overlooking aliens wandering through the alleyway, a Ranger on the ground around the corner lying in wait, all in overwatch ready for the ambush. The plan was to ambush, inflict major damange and have my Ranger rush in to take down the beacon. I take my grenadier on the rooftop and decide to kick things off with a frag nade to inflict some AOE but instead I must have selected flashbang. The result was about 6 disoriented enemies who suffered minor scrapes from the ambush and ran into hiding around the beacon, blocking the path for my lone wolf to complete his mission. Needless to say things went poorly and I decided it was best to restart into a new game.
I started semi-save-scumming on Commander. Let my party wipe once and ended up getting pretty far behind the 8-ball.
Started ironman on Veteran, was worried it was gonna be too easy, then wiped on the first big story mission.
Xcom!
I've wiped 7 times now on Commander, all within the first 2-3 months. By wiped I mean I am getting to the point where it cannot possibly end with me winning the campaign, essentially forcing a restart. This game is so much more savage than Enemy Unknown ever was. I hate to say it, but I think I'm going to have to swallow my pride and bump it down to Veteran. Other games start coming out in march and I don't want to fall off of this, because despite frustrations with line of sight issues and the lack of optimization, the game is absolutely phenomenal.
Don't restart the game after an unsuccessful mission!
You can come back from so much despair, and when you make that comeback it feels more satisfying than anything else.
I only had 2 Colonels and 2 Sergeants left, all Squaddies otherwise. Everyone else was captured or killed. All my fantastic items were gone as well and I had only one block remaining on the Avatar project. I'm starting to get things under control again and should soon be able to rescue my captured soldiers.
Don't quit too early. You're robbing yourself of a fantastic (sweaty) experience.
Since the game (like EU) seems to be a buggy mess, my "ironman" playthrough will be self made like i did with my second play through of the first with the EW dlc. Do people do ironman because they don't have the will power not to reload saves?
@oursin_360: You probably get a sweet steam achievement to prove it if you choose the iron man setting.
How is your game campaign going so far?
I haven't played much yet, only the first 2 real missions and I lost 2 guys the first one and the second went smooth. Just rescued my brother who they put as an engineer lol.
Getting slaughtered. Just when I felt like I was getting on par with the aliens, not one but TWO faceless pop up right next to me and wipe half my squad before I can do anything.
Happy to see to see that many are trying out this painful method of playing the game. My 1st run ended when I tried to upgrade magnetic weapons too early in the game then I saw project avatar already 3 slots close to completion and I barely made contact with other resistance then I saw I got no supplies to build additional facilities nor enough intel to even make contact to hit another black site. So in short, GG!!!! X(
Badly, really really badly :) Not going to try another one for a while though. Heard about a save corrupting bug that can occur if you exit the game while a chrysalid is concealed. Not sure of the veracity of it but I don't really want to test it in Iron Man. I'm going to have to just try and exert some will power and not save scum.

For what it's worth, I ended up in the same situation almost (they were 4 blips away) but managed to salvage it, in large part because my soldiers became real powerful with the magnetic weapon upgrade.
Just started my first go at ironman. I did play a few missions beforehand in 'normal' mode to get myself familiar with the mechanics. So far I feel I'm doing well but I just know I will get my ass handed to me pretty soon. Hopefully I will fail trough my own incompetence rather then a game bug.I can't imagine to play this game any other way though. I have great memories of the campaign in Enemy unknown even though I must have restarted that game four or five times. It's strange to me that I have such a high frustration tolerance for XCOM whereas in most other games I will bump down the difficulty instead.
I'm doing an iron man run at the moment on Commander (3rd difficulty, not sure of the name). I had to do about a dozen runs that got abandoned 2 hours in before I got back in to my stride as I haven't played it since release :)
I had a fucking cool mission a few nights ago. I had lost 2 of 5 guys on my team (I'm 2 months in, predator armor but no magnetic weaponry built). I activated a pod that had a muton and 2 Advent troopers. I figured all was lost as there was a big gap in my line where my 2 dead guys were and my sniper was exposed by themselves on the roof. So I called in an evac near the sniper and have her retreat off the map. Scorcher my bad ass combat specialist Lieutenant and a Squaddie grenadier start retreating towards the evac point. Scorcher takes out the muton with the rupture ability (she got it from the AWC) and the grenadier takes out an advent trooper with a lucky grenade from the evac point. Scorcher then managed to nail the last and we won without having to retreat!
It was really tense and a lot of fun :) Made it a few more missions after that before causualties mounted too high and we failed :( Started another one though and it's going much better!
