Pretty much. I think in my subconscious I got a ps3 and psp so I could remote play this puppy. It's too bad it's "successors" were unable to maintain it's spirit.

i got smacked by a kid once after calmly explaining how this game was superior in story to final fantasy 7. lemme tell ya no matter how much you love this game it doesn't justify a 24 yr old getting into a fistfight with an eleven yr old.

i totally whooped him too. bwahaha! ok, i take it back. it was totally worth a night in jail and the summary restraining order. Long live the Id!

In terms of story, I'd say Xenogears is one of the best games ever made. The gameplay is somewhat flawed at certain points though, and certain characters are pretty uninteresting. It's still a great game either way, though. Tough to find games anymore with real stories.

Greatest RPG. The term JRPG makes me a sad panda because whenever I hear someone use it it always sounds like some sort of derogatory term.

I probably am very biased since I have been playing it since 1998 and still play it (although I haven't recently since I lent my playing copy to my brother, and no way am I going to open my sealed original US release copy).  Been a few months now and I am having withdrawal symptoms.

Wow.  A fourteen-month-old thread got bumped.  Oh well.

A friend of mine that's really into Xenogears lent me her copy of the game a few years ago.  I didn't get more than maybe five or six hours into the game before giving up, and a large chunk of that was running around in a dungeon I found impossible to navigate because I was constantly losing my direction and a strong distaste for the jumping mechanic that they put in.  There's a lot of reasons why the game deserves praise, but there are some aspects that are just too outdated to let me enjoy it.

I prefer Xenosaga myself.  It's like Xenogears, but better.  Don't see why someone who likes Xenogears wouldn't like it.

My Xenogears-loving friend also enjoys Xenosaga (as do I), but neither of us were able to get beyond Episode II because the game just took a nosedive in terms of quality compared to the first.  Stripped-out subplots, gameplay mechanics that felt like an unnatural shift from the first and other odds and ends just piled up against it.  I actually made it all the way to the final dungeon in Episode II, but I could never bring myself to finish the game simply because a large portion of the game up to that point just wasn't enjoyable.

Episode I was a blast.  I'd have no trouble playing through it again.  I just feel disappointed since the strong promise of the first game ended up being squandered.

I have a tough time remembering Xenogears since I played it about 8 years ago, but I do remember liking it a lot.  It was getting old even then, however (a PS1 game in the PS2 era) and I recall primarily that it under-utilized its anime cutscenes, so that some pretty epic things would happen in-engine and look terrible.  It's my long-standing opinion that despite the fact they're more recent than many of the RPGs being remade, it is PS1 RPGs (Xenogears, FFVII, Suikoden II, maybe Chrono Cross, though I didn't personally care for that one) that need the treatment the most.  They were trying to utilize new technology for things that weren't really possible to pull off until the next console generation.

Edit: Regarding Xenosaga, I also enjoyed the first and blew through it in less than a week, though I don't think I really liked any of the characters, and unlike my favorite RPGs, I went to no effort to collect ultimate weapons and the like, just went straight through the story.  I picked up 2 out of a feeling of obligation but wasn't particularly excited for it for whatever reason and though I was mildly interested in the story, I couldn't maintain that through the combat sections, though.  They seemed totally disjointed from the narrative, and I stopped playing a few hours in.

I respect the opinions of others that are well presented, but I just think the idea that Chrono Cross's plot is fantastic is lunacy.  There are too many ludicrous plot-points, particularly in their straining attempts to tie the game into Chrono Trigger, for me to take it seriously in any way.

I'm not diving into a discussion concerning the validity of Chrono Cross' great storyline.

If you don't appreciate it, that's fine, I happen to disagree immensely.

It's my favorite game of all time for a multitude of reasons, including its storyline.

JRPG's in general, are ludicrous, nonsensical and meander so far from coherency that it's silly to fault this masterpiece for those reasons.

The point is, we have differing opinions and neither of us are going to change the others stance.

No need to delve any further down this path.

I disagree, it's very good game but it loses it's luster in the third act where it's all story and gameplay is nonexistent.

I say Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI tops Xenogears because they have an excellent balance of fantastic gameplay and superbly written stories.

I still prefer FFVI overall, but cannot deny Xenogears was one of the greatest jrpgs. It had it all - amazing soundtrack, fantastic storyline, great characters, fun battle system.
