    Yakuza: Dead Souls

Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Mar 13, 2012

The sixth title in the Yakuza series, replacing the previous games' semi-realistic storyline with a 'what if' story about a zombie invasion, still starring Kazuma Kiryu and other major Yakuza characters.

Yakuza 5 is about a goddamn zombie invasion. I'm serious.

    From Kotaku.

Yakuza is Sega's crime saga. The upcoming entry will have zombies in it. Yeah.

The first image Sega showed of upcoming Yakuza game, Yakuza: Of The End, depicted the in-game Kamurocho, the in-game version of Shinjuku's Kabukicho, in ruins.

The game's designer said that the theme for Of The End was "destruction". A more apt theme is "bwah?"

The initial image of the destroyed urban landscape seemed to look more like a natural disaster. The destruction, however, appears to have been caused by zombies. The latest issue of Japanese game magazine Famitsu confirms the inclusion of zombies in Yakuza: Of The End.

The game is set in April 2011, when the walking dead appear on the streets of Kamurocho. The Self Defense Force quarantines the area, and it becomes a fight to survive.

The scans show the Japanese Self Defense Force attempting to handle a horde of zombies. There appears to be either a tank or some sort of armored vehicle enveloped by zombies. Other scans show the city landscape in shambles. The outside of a sushi restaurant is destroyed.

The other scans are gunplay heavy, depicting Yakuza series hero Kazuma Kiryu mowing down zombies with machine guns. Another Yakuza character, Ryuushi Gouda, has a mechanical hand that transforms into machine gun.

Another screenshot shows what looks like is a giant rock monster.

The game's designer, Toshihiro Nagoshi, tells Famitsu that this is not the last Yakuza title. He did add that if this game was not a hit, then it might be the end of Yakuza games. So he is trying hard to make the best title he can. Nagoshi would not say whether Of The End is a numbered entry in the Yakuza series or whether it was a spin-off.

Of The End? This is the end of the Yakuza series as we know it. Though, if this game does feature zombie hostesses, perhaps we would be willing to overlook this totally off-the-wall direction the series is taking.

Give me a second while I collect the parts of my mind that have exploded. Allow me to decree this is probably the biggest "WTF announcement" so far in the year. As a long time fan of the series, I both embrace and am pretty weirded out by it. This is definity a situation where we will have to wait for the final product to make judgment. There's a part of me that hate's the huge tonal shift, and at the same time: I can totally picture Kazuma ripping out a zombie's intestines.... and curb stomping it.

I gotta ask: What's your opinion? Especially long-term fans. I'm actually really interested to hear everyone's two-cents.

I love this. The Yakuza games are some of the least wacky stuff that Japan puts out and the idea of them spending the last 5 or 6 years building up that reputation and then deciding "NO, FUCK IT - ZOMBIES." That's awesome.

Developer #1: So, a new Yakuza game, ideas?
Developer # 2: Well, in number 3 he had kids. How about we give him some pets, and then one of the pet dies and....
Developer # 1: I like it, I like it, keep it coming.
Developer # 2 : And then uh, the other pet turns rogue so uh....umm...
    SILENCE
Developer # 3: Fuck it lets just do zombies.

One of the guys working on the game said there probably won't be a Yakuza 6 if this game doesn't perform well, so I'm a little surprised they're taking the series in a direction that probably doesn't appeal to Japanese people. There's really no reason for them to cater to Western audiences as the Yakuza games are probably the worst-selling Japanese games in the West.

I dig moves like this. They are just indulging themselves, which they totally deserve after all that they have created. I say good for them, and this sounds awesome. It wasn't that much less ridiculous before. In fact, I'd say this is way less absurd in the west than any of the other games.

There's no shortage of Zombie games so this seems like a huge cash grab. I enjoyed the Yakuza series because they were well done games that were fairly ground level game approaches to organized crime in Japan. This is disappointing and pandering.

@Lukeweizer: The point is not the zombies. The point is that the Yakuza franchise, a franchise for five titles (including Kenzan) has built up a reputation for having it's storyline being grounded in real-world, is now throwing it's hands in the air and doing zombies. Thematically, the Yakuza franchise and zombies couldn't be farther away from each other.
Mechanically on the other hand, I could totally see it working. :P

My first thought after seeing this was,

That was also my first indication that this was not cannon.  The idea of zombies is ok for me, since this obviously isn't cannon.  Much like Kenzan!, this is just a crazy spin-off of the series.  Now, all I want to know is whether Chuck Greene or Frank West are in this.  It would be hilarious if they tried to tie this into the Dead Rising series.

    @m1k3: Yeah, it's not cannon.  I mean,

I actually remember Sega announcing another game aside from this and the PSP title.  My guess is the actual story will continue with that one.

That's surprising alright considering the series. Still, it sounds more like a spin off like the way they made that Feudal Japan Yakuza game. I dunno, it's weird but I kinda dig it in a way.

As long as you can stomp on a zombies face, and i'm pretty certain you'll be able to, I'm in! Yakuza 3 is totally nuts despite being grounded in some level of reality but I can totally see how zombies would work in that game... It's a shame zombies are kinda boring now.

Well, it's questionable when the game will see release at all.  The game was postponed after the earthquake and tsunami, and Sega hasn't yet stated when they plan to reschedule the Japanese release, and until that happens, there's no telling when or if an international release will follow.
