    Overview

Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm is a 2D indie fighting game developed and released by Yatagarasu Dev Team for arcades (using PC-based Taito Type X² hardware via NESiCAxLive) in Japan on February 12, 2015. It was later digitally published by Nyu Media for the PC on July 7, 2015.

An updated version of the indie game Yatagarasu, Attack on Cataclysm adds new characters, rebalanced gameplay, a revamped story, and new features (including a dynamic voice commentary system). The PC version also adds English localization (including additional voices for the Dynamic Commentary system) and online multiplayer (with GGPO rollback).

This version of the game was funded in part by a successful Indiegogo campaign, with $118,000 USD raised (exceeding its goal of $68,000 USD).

    Gameplay

Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm's gameplay is heavily inspired from Street Fighter III, incorporating that game's parry mechanic and emphasis on making correct reads against your opponent in battle through knowledge of spacing, utilizing the character's normal, special, and super attacks, along with parrying and countering the opponent's attacks.

    Controls

The game utilizes an eight-way joystick directional for character movement and executing the character's special and super moves along with four attack buttons (light punch, light kick, heavy punch, heavy kick) and two parry buttons (high parry and low parry).

    Mechanics

    Parry

The parry mechanic allows the player to nullify the opponent's attack and quickly retaliate with their own. A successful parry occurs when the player correctly times hitting the parry button just as their opponent's attack contacts their character, in which their own character will flash blue and has the chance to quickly counterattack the opponent.

    Overhead Attack

The overhead attack commands the character to short hop and attack high. As it's a high attack, it can only be blocked by a standing block. The short hop at the start of the overhead attack provides throw invincibility, preventing the overhead attack of being nullified by an opponent's throw.

    Unblockable Attack

The unblockable attack has the character briefly go dark for a second and then unleashing an attack that will hit if it connects with opponent, even if the opponent is prompting to block the attack. Unblockable attacks can either be avoided by spacing it out of its range or by parrying the attack.

    Ukemi

Ukemi allows the character to quickly recover their character back to a standing stance after being knocked down.

    Delayed Wakeup

Delayed wakeup prompts the character to recover from the ground from an knocked down attack later than normal.

    EX Special Moves

EX Special Moves is a command that slightly alters the special move's properties and consumes one-half of the SP Gauge.

    Super Move Reinforcement

The player can choose one of the character's two super moves to reinforce it with subtle buffs.

    Dynamic Commentator

The player can choose a select number of commentators to provide commentary during battle. All of Yatagarasu's playable cast along with a number of prominent people of the fighting game community featuring Tokido, James Chen, UltraDavid, Maximilion, and a few others.
