Did 3DS Just Get Achievements With...Accomplishments?

Don't get too excited yet, though.

The slightly delayed 3DS firmware went live today, introducing the ability for publishers to sell DLC, 3D video recording, and more hats to collect also introduces what may be Nintendo’s answer to achievements and trophies: accomplishments.

So far, accomplishments are limited to the StreetPass Mii Plaza and have zero point value, but it’s not hard to imagine accomplishments eventually expanding into actual games.

Nintendo didn’t trumpet the idea of accomplishments prior to this firmware update--in fact, I don’t remember the company mentioning them at all. Then again, that sounds like typical Nintendo.

If Nintendo decided to make accomplishemtns part of Virtual Console, my world might actually fall apart, and I don’t even really care about achievements that much.

That's cool for people that enjoy them. It's a nice bonus.

Bradtronon Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:28 p.m.

Oh nice.

MooseyMcManon Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:28 p.m.

Neat-o. I guess. I dunno. I don't even have a 3DS.

CharlesAlanRatliffon Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:28 p.m.

I was sad when they were never mentioned. I feel like every system should have some form of this, as they add replayability and cause players to explore a world more than they might have originally. Hopefully this expands to other games.

I stand by the fact that there should've been like... a single achievement or something for each 3DS game - a hat. Or some accessory. Completed Mario 3D Land? You get a tanooki suit for your Mii. Beat Ghost Recon? You get that sick future-y visor thing. Beat Zelda? Your Mii gets a Master Sword.

But they're tied to your device, right? There's still no real online account or identity?

That is a cool idea. Gives you some additional motivation to actually beat the game.

On the other hand, they make players bug out and play games for the wrong reasons if implemented poorly. That being said, this is still a nice feature and it's cool to see it as part of the update.

Nice. A step in the right direction for Nintendo. Hopefully they develop this into a full achievement system.
iAmJohnon Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:34 p.m.

Well that's cool!

I have had my 3ds for about 4 months and have only streetpassed 1person and that was on the metro
FoxMulderon Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:36 p.m.

Seems like an awesome thing to add to a handheld. Though I will not buy a 3DS until the next gen full Pokemon games are released. Then I will NEED to buy one!

msavoon Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:38 p.m.
While I get Nintendo's stance on achievement systems, like Miyamoto saying playing and enjoying the game should be the achievement, I find myself more and more invested when games have compelling achievements/trophies or bonuses like avatars and clothing options. I don't even necessarily want these things to brag to friends but I like seeing that I got a platinum trophy in a game or an S-Rank etc. I hope this step shows that Nintendo is open to a system like achievemnents/trophies and does have the ability to implement it in future releases.
SpunkyHePandaon Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:42 p.m.

What I wouldn't give for some Rhythm Heaven achievements. Or even accomplishments.

Th3_Jameson Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:44 p.m.

I want MK7 achievements.

Kordeshon Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:46 p.m.

Hopefully this is the first step of Nintendo actually embracing online and creating a coherent profile system so that we can actually do DLC, have decent multiplayer, and do away with friend codes.

Accomplishments huh? I always hoped they would be called Coins )=

If the achievements are for say... 3DS happy club member exclusives...
CrashTanukion Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:50 p.m.

@Shaanyboi: It should've happened for the Wii year ago, but they ignored it and let Microsoft run away with the full potential of that idea.

Marz is online on Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:54 p.m.
They should use the experience from doing this for the Wii-U, i'm sure people would welcome that feature for the next nintendo console.
bricewgilberton Dec. 6, 2011 at 6:55 p.m.

Yeah jesus christ they would sell sooo many virtual console games if they had accomplishments. I bought Bomberman 94 when I got my Wii at launch and that was it. Add accomplishments and I would buy a disgusting amount of games.
