id Software's second Quake game casts you as a lone space marine who must take the fight to the villainous alien Strogg on their home planet of Stroggos, and assassinate their leader, the Makron.
Overview
Quake II is the second game to be released in the Quake franchise, although it has nothing to do with the original Quake other than its name and a similar arsenal of weapons. Quake II has the player take on the role of a lone space marine, the sole survivor of a disastrous human counterattack on the Strogg home world of Stroggos. The player is tasked with crippling the military production capability of the planet and ultimately assassinating the Strogg leader, the Makron. The weapons in Quake II are reminiscent of those in the first Quake, with standbys like the shotgun, rocket launcher, and grenade launcher appearing. A new variant of the BFG called the BFG 10K was also added. The game also added some new weapons that have since become integral to the Quake experience, especially the instant-firing, high-damage railgun.
Multiplayer
While Quake II increased the focus on an involved single-player campaign over its predecessor, the game is remembered primarily for its multiplayer component, which was incredibly popular for years following the game's release. However, the feel of the multiplayer differed greatly from the original Quake due to changes to the movement physics and weapons' speed and damage. These changes proved divisive in the Quake multiplayer community at the time.Examples of these changes:
- Bunny hopping: In Quake, you could change direction in mid air allowing a greater sense of movement freedom, this isn't possible in Quake II.
- Rockets: In Quake, rockets are very fast and while in Quake II they are much slower.
- Weapon switching: In Quake, weapons are switched in an instant but in Quake II there is an actual animation for this like in most modern shooters.
Quake matches tend to be very fast paced and the frag count is usually very high while Quake II matches are slower (when compared to the original, it is fast compared to all other shooters) but more tactical.
Mods
Quake II included significant mod support, built specifically with user-generated content in mind after the success of the original Quake. The resulting community produced many popular online modifications, character models, weapons, and gametypes, some of which were used more than the regular, unmodded game.Action Quake 2
Action Quake 2 (or just AQ2) was one of the more popular total conversion mods for Q2. The game focuses on recreating the look and feel of an action movie with fast paced action and a realistic damage model. Many of the game's maps are set in cities or other urban enviroments and the list of weapons are those usually found in most games today (Pistol, Shotgun, Submachine gun, Assault rifle and Sniper rifle) and so the game is more of a modern day shooter compared to the sci-fi universe that Quake II is set in. While AQ2 was originally just a modification, it can now be downloaded as a seperate game for free, Axion 2008.Useful links
