As a long time fan of the Advance Wars series, Days of Ruin comes off as kind of the bastard child of the series to me. It certainly doesn't look like your typical Advance Wars game, but after you play it for a bit you'll realize that its gameplay is so Advance Wars. This means that Days of Ruin is a solid strategy game that should appeal to fans of both the genre and the franchise, though the new look alone might not be enough to endear the game to newcomers.Most of the new vibe comes from the ...

A successful change of pace 0
Developers rarely take risks with established series, which can sometimes leave veteran franchises feeling like they've worn out their welcome. I don't like a lot of the changes in the newest Ace Combat games, but I don't begrudge the Project Aces team for trying to shake stuff up. Fortunately Days of Ruin fared a lot better with its transition, as a lot of the key differences between it and its predecessors change things for the better. The new setting is OK. While the “Advance Wars” (or, more appropriately, the “Wars”) series has been going on for quite some time (20 years in , 7 here in ), it hasn’t changed a whole lot over that time. Sure, new features, units, and gameplay elements have been added with every incarnation, generally making for a better game every time it appears, but the series has always maintained a certain level of “cuteness” factor.
