We truly live in the subscription era. From TV, games, movies, music, porn, content creators and the uncertain subscription to life it self.

So far I am really enjoying what they are putting out. I mean, it has a retrofuture GB vibe to it. In that, it feels like they want to do the tried and true by the seat of their pants approach as GB of old. But their visual treatment of the stream has it’s own style that I quite like. From backround color choices to the three of them in hexagonal boxes. Overall I’m just happy they’re sticking around, and I need more podcasts anyway. Overall I feel like this is good, GB is creatively moving in a different exciting direction and some OG folks do something similar to the old stuff but in a new way. I see this as definitely a net positive. Also, between Nextlander, Dan and other stuff I feel like I am seriously considering just start using Twich, a site I never visit. Whatever that’s saying.

Edit: ok I wrote their name wrong twice. First Netlander then Newlander. Jesus.

@pezen: Yeah, the only negative aspect I can really feel justified in complaining about is that I have to use Twitch now, ugh!

I did not enjoy their stream with waypoint talking over the Devolver video because it immediately turned in to telling people why you don't think something is funny.

Other than that, it's been great!

@alistercat: As opposed to noping out of a weird cult initiation to watch the '95 E3 instead? Or losing their god damned minds over Nintendo doing 30 minutes of smash v-triggers during e3? Or having an aside to realize that Dan doesn't know what pirates are?

I dunno, maybe it is that I am also pretty over the devolver schtick but that was about the only thing that made me tolerate it. Like Austin said, when everything is a punchline, nothing is. So it felt like the usual "okay, now the company is talking about some stupid shit nobody but their PR department cares about. Oh, cool, here is a game. Oooh, that game looks good"

@gundato: Much like music, comedy criticism is the worst. You don't have to find it funny, but someone telling you why something isn't funny is a bad viewing experience unless you're experiencing vindication that you too do not find it funny. Like Jeff said yesterday, we're not going to tell our jokes over their jokes and that feels like a better use of time.

I do actually think E3 95 was a good use of the time. They decided they weren't in to it and switched gears.

@alistercat: This is exactly why I watched the Devolver show by itself, without anyone talking over it. I watch GB and NL talk over these conferences in part because they are so dry and stuffy that I need some humor added to them. Devolver treats its own press conference the way video game press conferences deserve to be treated.

@pezen: You'll be fine as long as you can remember www.meatybaps.com

Kinda funny they kept this considering the phrase appears to be slang for breasts that results in a whole lot of obscure porn on a Google search.

@nodima: I'm pretty sure a fan bought the meatybaps URL midway through a Nextlander stream and set up the redirect. It will probably be quickly forgotten unless they stream the rest of that Dark Side of the Moon game (which is I think what it's from?). But yeah, probably confusing for the SEO algorithm at the moment.

@bisonhero: I don't think it will be quickly forgotten. It was still being mentioned in Twitch chat today, and it's something that happened during a moment when emotions were high and everyone was super excited. It was the first Nextlander in-joke and reference and I think people will hang on to it for awhile and reference it from time to time by saying things like "I was here for day one, back when the baps were REALLY meaty."

I don't think it will have super long staying power or anything. It's no China Don't Care or batmanbatmanbatman.info (a site that is STILL up to this day, RIP Ryan) but the early stuff always gets remembered for awhile.

The Baps = Boobs, also a bread roll joke is so old in parts of England that is very tame at this point.

Plus they don't own the domain so they are stuck with it as long as the owner pays the registration fees.

Happy for the Nextlander crew and it's incredible early success. However their E3 streams with Waypoint have been close to unwatchable as they keep talking through all of the trailers. I think Brad managed to get in 3 words during the Xbox showcase. Here's hoping they just stick to the 3 of them for future live stream reactions.

I hate to add fuel to the fire, especially since it seems like it's dying down here, but I haven't seen the possibility of non-compete clauses and employment contracts factoring in to others' speculation. It's likely Red Ventures bought Giant Bomb and worked out with Jeff that he'd be contractually obligated to stick around. I could see them thinking that without Jeff, there is no point in owning Giant Bomb. This may be similar with Jeff Bakalar and CNET, but they also worked it out that he'd transfer over.

Similarly, I think the simplest explanation for this whole exodus from Giant Bomb is exactly what Vinny, Brad, and Alex said it is: they were tired of answering to a corporate overlord. Since they were not contractually obligated to stay like the Jeffs likely were, and since so many of their friends were having great success on Patreon, they figured they'd be their own bosses again and left.

Again, purely speculation, but this scenario explains why there's no ill-will between the staff and former staff, but also why they don't really full-throatily endorse each other. Bottom line, I like all these people a whole lot, I wish them all success, and I am so excited to see where both groups go in the future! I also hope that they'll come together again some time after the newness wears off and we can get some ultimate collaborations.

I've enjoyed the Waypoint/Nextlander E3 content very much. They've had that old school Giant Bomb vibe that's been missing for a long time.

@kowalski: Why are you on Giant Bomb?

@elby: I don't know if I'm going crazy, but I could've sworn that at some point Jeff (G) talked about now actually owning part of Giant Bomb? Am I going crazy, or did this really happen? Or is this some Mandela effect stuff?

Good for them. I'm having a hard enough time keeping up with just the Bombcast, so I won't be adding another 'cast to my listening queue.

probably not a one-off. they seem very waypoint-adjacent.

100% this! At first I planned to watch the E3 proceedings on the Waypoint streams, but the fact that maybe the absolute minimum of attention was paid to what was going on made it kind of a hard no for me. I realized that I do prefer the more strcutured approach GB has had most of the time, altough the personalities seemed more interesting on first impression on the waypoint/nextlander side.

Between Giant Bomb, Nextlander, Waypoint and Fire Escape there is more content from GB and former GB staff than ever. I'm enjoying listening to them all.

Kind of echoing some of the prior comments, the Nextlander + Waypoint E3 streams aren't working for me. I was kind of expecting an equal split of commentary, but it's more like the Waypoint guys talking almost over everything, even the AAA games. I watched some of the GiantBomb videos and the difference is night and day. I can actually understand what's being said and listen to the music from the games.

I dunno. I am liking it but I also never watched a "Talks Over" to see gaming news.

If I just want to see a bunch of trailers and "get hype" then I can watch on my own (and traditionally I did that with the Bethesda streams because iD and Machinegames). If I am watching some personalities Talk Over a stream then I want them to talk. I don't want them to shush each other and listen to what Stifler has to say about Chaos. I want to hear the questioning of why anyone thought that was a good idea in the first place.

@curseofthewise:I mean I get that, but do you really think that's how things are at Giant Bomb? I think things are pretty relaxed over there. They still haven't even gone back into the office, right? From what they've been saying too, Red Ventures is better than CBS.

I'd say it's more likely that they don't want to re-memorize and re-do a bunch of corporate bullshit from square 1 again, only to maybe be sold off again in another 5-10 years, it's gotta be exhausting on all of them. And RedVentures can SEEM like a lot of things externally, but I'd say them being difficult to work with getting time off is the more likely scenario than "They all had a massive falling out with Jeff Gerstmann that didn't extend to Jason, Bakalar, Jan, and Rorie."

I agree. I think it's that they saw an opportunity to be their own bosses through the success of their peers with patreon. Why keep making money for a corporate company after corporate company when you only get a small piece of it and you're breaking your back doing all the work making original content? Good for them, they're getting paid $$$$ now. You gotta respect it.

I see what you're saying, but saying they got here "based on the success of their peers" is kinda shitty. They were just as much a part of this site as anyone else ever involved with it.

That doesn't seem to me what @dontsleep was saying. The statement was "through the success of their peers", i.e. they saw that their peers could make patreon work, so they went for it too.
