It sucks that Ghost of a Tale is getting undersold due to releasing so close to another mouse game, when the version that's been in early access since 2016 already had a lot of charm.
@ericsmith: oh for sure. And for the record I have no problem with it winning.
I have problems with other early access games being shut down because they are still in early access, like the #1 game here was at the time of deliberations. The only difference was the devs said they would hit 1.0 before end of year, and due to the nature of everything, that could have just as well been missed.
Note to anyone developing a game in early access. Just say it will come out before the next year to make yourself eligible for GOTY awards with antiquated rules. If you slip and miss your target date, oh whoops?
On a more serious note, I should really check out NieR and Night in the Woods.
I think "best world" was really the balance between good worlds and gameplay.
On one side you have worlds: their design, story, and auxiliary story elements.
On the other is gameplay mechanics, does it shoot itself in the foot based on gameplay.
Maybe it's too suggestive, I totally get Assassin's Creed being the spark behind this category. The world is amazing and the gameplay totally compliments it.
I don't think Night in The Woods should be on there because it sounds like it's mostly story.
I think Cuphead is a tough sell because the gameplay is actively against you exploring it.
Maybe open-world games have a leg up, they have more gameplay opportunities. Maybe strollplay games are hindered because their worlds can be amazing but the gameplay rather dull.
But the category is interesting if it's trying to find the game with the best balance between the two.
