    The bowler hat was originally designed by the hatmakers Thomas and William Bowler (the namesake of the Bowler hat) in 1849. The bowler hat was designed to protect a gardenkeeper from low hanging branches while on horseback. This gardenkeeper had apparently been wearing a top hat, but this proved to be problematic, since the hat would get knocked off and damaged (no one likes a damaged top hat). And thus the bowler hat was born.
