Revolutionary for its time, and one of the best WWII games ever
The first of the groundbreaking Call of Duty series, COD puts you into the shoes of American, British and Russian soldiers in one of the many theaters during the war.
The graphics were the best of its time, and still look decent when played today. Textures are clean, soldier's faces are fairly detailed, buildings and vegetation are appropriately colored, and the guns all look convincing and unique. The graphical engine is lag free and very precise (e.g. fast response time and accurate interaction with objects ) in contrast to engines such as Source. Missions take place in all times of the day, and environments range from evacuated villages to ocean liners to large fields and also urban environments - most impressively rendered when storming the Reichtag.
The music in the game similarly does a great job of setting the tone with large overaching overtures and also trumpety frantic music. The music ranges from full blown themes to very quiet ambience, and is perfectly placed whenever it occurs. The sound in the game is excellent, with all guns sounding accurate and realistic. Explosions, artillery fire and character voiceovers are also done seamlessly and realistically, with enough variance to keep things fresh.
Gameplay would be considered solid even today, and COD was one of the games that pioneered aiming down the sight; making yourself more accurate by using the actual gun sight rather than just the reticle. Mission objectives are listed clearly, and the radar negates the situation where you get stuck and don't know what to do.
Available for mere shillings, anyone who is a fan of first person shooters or WWII would be doing themselves a great favor by adding this classic gem into their collection.
