Overview
Jaguar XJ220 is a racing game by Core Design built around the car model of the same name produced by British car manufacturers Jaguar. Players take on a series of race courses across the world in their XJ220, spending money earned in races on international travel and fixing any damage incurred. Extra features include a two-player mode and a custom track editor mode.
The game was originally released on the Commodore Amiga in 1992, eventually seeing a Sega CD port the following year.
Reception
For many gamers and game critics, Jaguar XJ220 was the pinnacle of the sprite-based "two-and-a-half-D" racing game. It built upon the core concepts that had made Gremlin's Lotus series so popular, and expanded the horizon with a few innovative features, like the track editor and the CD player-style interface for music selection.
In addition to a solid driving model, the game was praised for its presentation, which was immaculate for the time. Detailed car sprites and environments, smooth animation, great music and some impressive weather effects all contributed to a memorable experience.
