Early Career and Black Isle Studios

Born in Wisconsin, Josh attended Lawrence University and graduated with a Bachelor' of Arts in history. Once he moved to California, he became employed by Interplay as a web designer. His first role was as a web designer for Planescape: Torment.

Sawyer's next projects consisted of the Icewind Dale series for which he worked as a designer and as lead designer for Icewind Dale II. He was then credited on Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II.

Throughout his time at Interplay, Josh was working on both Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound (then known as Project Jefferson) and Fallout 3 (then known as Van Buren). Both games, however, were cancelled in 2003.

    Obsidian Entertainment

During the development of Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows, Josh left Midway to work for Obsidian Entertainment. This transition reunited him with former Black Isle co-workers Feargus Urquhart, Chris Avellone, Chris Parker, Chris Jones and Darren Monahan. He immediately began work on Neverwinter Nights 2 as a design lead. He then provided additional design for Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer.

Josh was the lead designer of Obsidian's Aliens RPG, tentatively subtitled Crucible, until its cancellation by Sega in 2009. In his spare time, he was attempting to transfer the work he did on The Black Hound into a module for Neverwinter Nights 2, but has since abandoned the project. He contributed to the hand-to-hand combat design in Alpha Protocol, and was the design lead of Falllout: New Vegas, Obsidian's entry in the post-Interplay Fallout franchise. He is currently project lead on Pillars of Eternity.
