The name's Dark, Perfect Dark. 0

For almost 10 years, Perfect Dark for the N64 has been my favourite game.  I remember all the hype in the magazines, and painfully awaited it, following all of the development and details as they were released.  I was in the store the day it was released, and was so disappointed when I was asked for ID (I was 14 at the time, but incredibly huge for my age - I'd never had any previous problems).  I was even further disappointed when I discovered that all expansion paks were sold out and I had t...

Perfect Dark is an Impressive XBLA Package 0

Perfect Dark was originally released for the N64 in 2000 as a spiritual sequel to GoldenEye 007. Now it comes to the Xbox Live Arcade as a download for 800 Microsoft points with a cosmetic upgrade to work in HD and a smooth 60 frames per second. People who've played this before should know that the game is nearly unchanged from the N64 version. Those who have never played Perfect Dark might find it a tougher sell to spend points on a ten year old first person shooter. However, even if you're not...

A brilliant remaster of a classic game; true perfection 0

4J Studio’s HD remaster is a faithful perfection of the Nintendo 64 classic first-person spy shooter and contains many subtle improvements over the base game that any fan of the original should definitely experience. Now, full disclosure here – growing up, Perfect Dark for the N64 has always been my answer when asked what my favourite game was. I evangelised in supreme detail the reasons for this in the N64 retro review and so this will be purely a summation of my thoughts on what the...

Still Perfect (aside from the frame rate) 4

Rare followed up their Nintendo 64 smash hit GoldenEye 007 with the superspy-meets-sci-fi spiritual sequel Perfect Dark (2000), which improved on every facet of their Bond shooter and included a stupendous amount of content that can still be enjoyed today. Now, full disclosure here - growing up, Perfect Dark has always been my answer when asked what is my favourite game. It came at a time when I was fully into reading articles about games and having been a huge fan of GoldenEye 007 I was primed t...

One of the Best FPSs of All Time 1

The title isn't just my opinion; if you look at the best games of all time on Metacritic, Perfect Dark remains near the top with an average score of 97 and is the highest FPS on the list. But why was it so great, and does it hold up today? I argue that in many areas (obviously not controls, framerate, graphics, online play, or voice acting but in most others), even in a direct comparison it fares well with or even surpasses modern FPSs. In terms of game modes, it has a campaign with three diffic...

How the Perfect have Fallen 2

If you go to the settings screen when you play the updated port of Rare's seminal N64 shooter, you'll be "treated" to the smallest, most tepid of jokes and references. There are three different control styles to choose from the menu. The first option, called "Classic", attempts to recreate the button configuration as found on the N64 controller. The other two control settings are called "Spartan" and "Duty Calls". Even a game player only peripherally aware of important shooters will realize that...

    Perfect Dark XBLA Review 0

By - Craig H.Almost 10 years has passed since Perfect Dark was originally released back on the Nintendo 64. During its time it was one of the premiere FPS games (along with Goldeneye 64) and paved the way for modern day console FPS’s. 4JStudios and Microsoft did an exceptional job at fan service and provide a reminder of where the modern day console FPS’s got their start. For those unfamiliar with Perfect Dark, the story follows a British secret agent named Joanna Dark who is trying to figure out...

It would be a sin to pass this classic game up. 0

When you think of classic FPS shooters, whether your a hardcore gamer or not, Perfect Dark should be one of the first few games that should appear in your head. If its not one of the first 10 that you think of, please burn every game and system you own and never play games ever again. Perfect Dark may not have been the first shooter or the most unique shooter, but it definitely revolutionized FPS gaming with its multiplayer.Looking back at the game, the graphics may have significantly dated comp...
