Cluter's 2017 GOTY Fantastically Specatular Bonzanza Special!

Hey you jerks! 2017 is coming to a close and it's about time I start to dive back into my gaming memory banks to reminisce about a fantastic year in gaming. Now, I'm pretty much just a PC gamer, so I missed a few special games like Horizon, Resident Evil 7, and Uncharted which is unfortunate, but thankfully there were PLENTY of lovely games to go around for everyone.

I barely even hit 10 games for this list. I dumped a whole bunch of time in persistent game worlds that sucked all my time away, but boy oh boy what fun I had! OK let's get to the list which is ordered in reverse order for added drama and suspense. Here we go, and remember, DON'T. GET. ELIMINATED!

I love me a good Batman game, and this is no different. The much-talked about Nemesis system is back and more robust than before. The games environments and Orcs look really nice, but I have to agree with Jeff Gerstmann in that the playable character, Talion, looks like a low-res, previous generation model. It's unfortunate and just had to be an oversight somehow.

The story is whatever. Get that revenge, y'all. The murdering you do along the way is real fun though. Plenty of decapitated Orcs and Uruk'hai in my trail. The game did start to get a bit repetitive near the end of the game, and once I heard about the grind you need to endure unless you wanna get into the loot box shit, I put the game down.

Oh boy. This had no right to be as good as it is. It felt real nice to be back playing a new Sonic 2D game that felt like Sonic 2. The music is jammin', the rings are shiny, the speed is fast... it's great. The new/remixed stages are also really neat. Some cool tricks the dev team pulled while still making it feel like a Genesis-era Sonic game was what solidified it's appearance on my Top 10 list.

Oh and that boss battle? Super neat!

Eric Pope's For Honor is next on this list. When this released I was neck deep in this game. It launched with some problems with in-game currency (like every online game now), and some bad connections problems, but for the most part I really liked it's take on 1v1 combat. The guard and attack system is a real nice innovation that I can see just getting better with a sequel.

The Faction Warfare mode thingy is a neat idea that I don't think works as well as the studio would like, but I had my fun with it in it's zeitgeist.

I hadn't heard of this game until Brad mentioned it on an episode of the Giant Bombcast. As he described the game it just sounded more and more like a game I'd be into, and he was right.

Another rogue-like where you earn currency throughout your run, and when you die you spend that currency on better weapons/items/etc. 2D pixel platformer/twin stick shooter? Yes please!

This just released recently on PC and no one was happier than me! The story mode is more of what the Netherrealm folks do, which is "make good-ass story modes in fighting games". The facial animations alone are worth the price of admission alone. It was kind of hard to follow along with the story just because I was frozen in amazement at the tech needed to pull it off. So pretty!

The fighting is still real nice. Back is block, 3 main attack buttons plus a character power mutton. Same as the first Injustice game.

The big addition between games however, is the gear system. Here you get a loot box after almost everything you do, making gear very plentiful for every fighter in the game. It's exciting to think of the Mortal Kombat franchise getting gear mods and such. I love customizing things!

It's Destiny 2. It feels really good as a shooter. It's REAL pretty on PC. It just needs more. More. Give it more. Also it's a goddamned social game. Where's my chat?!

Ok I'm being too negative. I've had a bunch of fun raiding and doing various group activities with people from the Unofficial Giant Bomb Discord (yo my dudes!), so while it doesn't seem like it's in my top 5 from my words, trust me when I say I still launch it daily to knock out some strikes or public events.

Tekken 7 is probably the best fighting game out today. Its perfect feel and controls are so fluid and precise, the graphics are super crisp, the cosmetics are hilarious and wild.... etc. My boy Jin is largely unchanged from when I picked him up from Tekken 5 so that made it real easy to hop in. Oh and also Akuma is in the game. Fucking Akuma. Oh that wasn't weird enough for you? Hows about some Geese Howard? No?! You madman! You want more?! FINE here's Noctis from freaking Final Fantasy 15!

It's the fighting game I like to watch the most at tournaments as well. Its showing at EVO was perfect. The way the game zooms in on the fighters and slows things wayyyy down as both players attack at the same time while one is near a KO is just HYPE CITY.

So for MONTHS this game was going to be my #1 game of the year. I've cooled a bit on the game with the rise of hackers and cheaters in the past few months, but this game will be one I play long into 2018.

I remember being a mentor of sorts to a lot of new players in the UGBD and that was super fun. I've only ever gotten 2 chicken dinners, one in a duo, and one in a squad, but that's ok. It's still just so much fun, and it's hopefully only going to get better.

It still being in Early Access at the time of this writing (Dec 6th) means that I can't give it my #1, but more importantly it means the game is just going to get better and better with better optimization and more content.

The future is very bright with this game, and I'll be along for the ride!

So I got a Switch for an early Christmas gift on Black Friday, and with it, you just know I had to grab Breath of the Wild along with Mario. Glad I did.

This is the first time I put any real time into a Zelda game. I had an NES, but just never played the original, never had an N64, so I've only ever dabbled in Ocarina which was the last Zelda game I played.

    Holy fuck.

The sound design is sublime. Just running around with minimal music and nothing but the sounds of the wind and animals and monsters is just so goooood. The weapon durability mechanic was something that gave me some worry, but in practice it's not too bad. I always have a backup weapon at the ready, plus whatever monster I kill, I can just steal their weapon since they wont be needing it anymore.

I'm very early in the game. Only unlocked about 12 shrines, but I can tell that this is going to be one that keeps me hooked for a long while.

This is the first Mario game I've seen credits on since maybe SMB3 on the NES, and holy shit what a ride it was! I don't think I ever got mad at the game for anything. Just 100% fun and smiles all over the place. Cappy is one of the neatest features I've seen in a game in a while, and he's cute as hell to boot!

I really don't know if there's much to say about this game that everyone hasn't already said. It's beautiful, it's so much fun... IT'S MARIO TIME!
