I Was a Teenage Senior Guide in Everquest

Hail, Giantbomb!

This article has been running in my head to put to words sometime and now I feel pretty safe now to talk about those years now. Finding that GameMasters(GM) in both EQ1 and EQ2 became severely restricted with the move to Daybreak Entertainment I thought there needed to be some record of the oddness of the Guide support.

The role of a GM is a multifaceted job that is part IT, part communication major, part slueth, and an all around expert at the how the game works; frontend, backend, and workarounds. The GM is there to give support to innocent players while being able to pick up when a player is doing very shady things. In my opinion, when I became a Guide, this unique customer service allowed me to severely grow as a working person; from IT, to programmer, to security tech.

This is why Verant Studios/SOE allowed the same setup as Ultima Online had and allow normal players to become "Guides" in secret in exchange of subscription-free play. You know...subscriptions? The opposite of free-to-play+ microtransactions?
