Ranked, Pre-2023 Games Played in 2023

Games I played for the first time in 2023 (Dec 2022 - Nov 2023) that came out before 2023.

List items

  • Holy moly, this was terrifying. I got scared so many times. There are a few things that could have been better like make it more clear why the ghosts are some times damageable and sometimes not when visually they look the same or make fights more interesting.

  • This game is really good. The story is probably the best story since Yakuza 1. The gameplay is solid. There was a big difficulty spike, even though I had done every side story and event up until that point. Some boss battles just had too much health. The platinum requires an irritating amount of grinding. Which sucks, just because I was enjoying so much of the game and to find that I basically needed to just mindlessly grind for 10s of hours to get it really hurt. I know, it's hard to complain about enjoying a game so much you want to do everything, but I really did and felt let down.

  • This game was fantastic. It's a horror game with some survival elements. You play as a regular person. You never feel overpowered, but you also do not feel too overwhelmed. The game kind of just throws you into the psychological horror and in a way feels like a good version of Stranger Things as a video game. This would have won 2022 GOTY if I had gotten around to it.

  • When this game first game out, I was worried it was going to be pervy. I saw someone speed running it, and it was nowhere near what I was worried about. This game was an incredibly pleasant surprise. It was fun to play, it was funny, it even had me tear up at one point (then promptly ruin it by making a pervy joke). Highly recommend.

  • I played this game co-op with my wife. We laughed so hard our sides and faces hurt. You play as astronaut in zero g trying to navigate around and do things. Some times though you just mess up and start spinning off or throw an item you need far away.

  • Lots of transformations made for a lot of navigation options and puzzles. Lots of references to prior games and characters were also fun. The ultimate edition has some good DLC included.

  • I don't know what this game was about, but I had fun. It's a very chill platformer.

  • This game was a lot of fun! I really appreciated some of the improvements over Risky's Revenge (such as the hot baths). I think having played Risky's Revenge gave me some insights into the story. Since Shantae lost her genie powers at the end of RR, she's still human. Her hair still whips really well, but now spells are consumable items. You unlock various maneuvering abilities along the way. I'm really loving this franchise.

  • Wow! My understanding is one person made this game. It's a 2 hour FPS that feels like it was made by a AAA developer. I enjoyed every minute of this. Highly recommend.

  • Having a lot of fun with this game. Feels like they made a lot of improvements from 2k21. Either that or I'm somehow just playing better. I have been playing My Eras with the classic Pistons. You get four jumping on points: 1983, 1991, early 2000's (I forgot the year) and present day. Started with 1991 and am refusing to let Jordan win another title. Might get more into this game as I get better.

  • I quite enjoyed this game. I played a girl named Tina. I managed to de-friend a boy obviously headed towards trouble. Then, I befriended another boy that was made to look like the "bad boy," but was dealing with his parents' divorce where he thought he was the cause.

  • My time with this game is closely reflected by one of my favorite Zoolander quotes, "Do I know what product I'm selling? No. Do I know what I'm doing today? No. But I'm here, and I'm gonna give it my best shot." I don't really know what happened in this game. There was time travel and monster catching. I had fun though.

  • This was the first Shantae game I have ever played. It was a lot of fun. but there were times where I had no idea where to go.

  • This was a a 2D beat em up with flair. The art style is fantastic! It takes place in historical China. You play as Princess Ji, who is awesome. It only took a few hours, which was a great length. The movement and combat both felt really good.

  • It's the best part of RE4 as an entire puzzle game! Finished it in 1.3 hours according to Steam. Well worth the $1 I spent on it.

  • I had fun playing through this. I think one of the greatest things was the "Skip Drive" button. Some times there were story pertinent drives, but for the most part you could just skip right to the destination. I enjoyed it so much that I grabbed Mafia 2: Definitive Edition.

  • Played this for the Super Switch Club. This was a pretty decent platformer. The board game at the end was really annoying, but with 9 worlds, it was a nice length.

  • I played this game co-op with my wife. It was just the right length. Just as we were getting kind of tired of it we reached the end!

  • This was a pretty fun shooting gallery game. Probably wouldn't have liked it as much without rewind.

  • This was a pretty neat RPG. You select one of 7 different characters to start. You can later recruit one of the other six to join you. There is a mini map that shows enemies as dots and cities as circles. If you run into a dot, you start a random battle, so it's not 100% random. It felt a bit grindy, because the power curve didn't just naturally go with the story. You collect seven runes in order to save the world (or something), but then get tricked, go 5000 years in the past and defeat the evil.

  • This was a funny soccer game with a twist. It only took me about 2 hours, but I really enjoyed my time. Could have done with a couple fewer games, but it works!

  • I played through this for Game Pass quests because my nephew started it. This was actually a fun collectathon. I would say it introduces kids to a few gaming concepts pretty well.

  • A short beat-em up that added a fun comedic flair to the beginning. It was basically the right length AND had a FANTASTIC checkpoint system. When I died, I didn't feel overly punished.

  • Fun story. Playing on easy made the combat going quickly. If I was a fighting game player, it seemed like there was a lot of customization options.

  • Played through the story on easy. I'm bad at Tekken. Got the game and all DLC for super cheap, and I don't think I have the patience to get good at it. Making me reconsider if I want Street Fighter 6 when it drops. The story was interesting. Made me watch story videos for the franchise on YouTube.

  • I had some fun, but the games were really repetitive and boring overall. I'm not sure why this is such a popular franchise. Did everything in about an hour.

  • This was fairly fun. I enjoyed each area, but then it became kind of tedious. I did appreciate that each screen change was a checkpoint, but some times it felt like I had to play next to perfect to succeed. I could have grinded out enough cookies for the best armor, but that felt tedious.

  • This game had an interesting gimmick of controlling two people at once. Puzzles were pretty straight forward except for one or two. It was fine.

  • This started out a lot of fun. Familiar zones brought back and remixed a bit. Then, the same issue that every 2D Sonic game has just hits. It goes from, "Let's have fun running fast" to, "Let's slow down, platform, and deal with random level design/boss BS."

  • This game started off slow for me. Then, I got into it and was enjoying it. Then, I finished the main quests and still had like 7 or 8 days to go. I didn't want to do any more side quests. The final boss spiked in difficulty compared to other stuff. There are a lot of poor design decisions. The final boss ended up dropping this game behind 13-2 for me. It was ahead until then.

  • Pokemon Legends Arceus ate this game's lunch. It was a real let down. There are some neat ideas, but it's slogged down by a bunch of stuff that is just annoying.

  • I don't have a clue what happened in this game. I had heard that some times the story makes no sense, but I ended one chapter and at the start of the next chapter one of my allies had an eye injury that everyone just knew about. Something about sacrificing yourself to save your country maybe? Any time I would do a side quest, I would hate the game. Just mainlining it was the right option.

  • I played this by accident, because my nephew was visiting. He had gotten most of the achievements, so I finished them off. It's not good, even for a kids game it seems lacking in content. I think I finally found a game where I would rather play Halo Infinite.
