Ranked, Worst Games of 2020-2029

Since my list of best games can only hold 100, here are the worst games of the decade that I played.

List items

  • I played this by accident, because my nephew was visiting. He had gotten most of the achievements, so I finished them off. It's not good, even for a kids game it seems lacking in content. I think I finally found a game where I would rather play Halo Infinite.

  • Garbage. Absolute garbage. Whoever was in charge of the campaign should be fired.

  • Wow. I really thought Redfall was the shoo-in for worst game of 2023. This game is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring. It commits one of the worst crimes a horror game can do. It thinks it is being clever/interesting/scary/saying something, but it's not doing anything at all. This game is so boring that I am now worried the Silent Hill 2 Remake will be bad. I would still rather suffer through this than Halo: Infinite though.

  • This is generic af. Stay away. Would still rather play than Halo: Infinite.

  • I gave this a try. The animation style is not for me. It's intentionally choppy, like a comic book from panel to panel. However, it is not choppy enough to come across like a comic book. I did not like any of the characters. Where they were supposed to come across as having every day struggles or making desperate decisions, they came across to me as whiny. I did like the Sheriff's wife. She was cool and felt authentic. The UI is slow and clunky. It's like the developers of this game were fans of the TellTale games, but instead of learning lessons from it, decided they would make everything worse. Maybe the game gets good or has a satisfying conclusion, but it cannot be worth the slog.

  • It's Overwatch. You either like it or are sick of it. Even after years away from it, I'm still stick of it.

  • It's fine. Gets stale fast.

  • A decent shooter that is missing some QoL items. It's fine.

  • Tying the combat to the rhythm makes it feel clunky. It's a stylish beat 'em up (ala Devil May Cry) that doesn't feel cool.

  • Oof. What a let down. Only a few of the guns are any fun. I like that when you buy one weapon, both characters get it, but they should have played a little differently. There's a lot of empty space on the map. Places that the map acts like you should go, but have nothing. Crashed my PS5 over 10 times. It has Invisible walls for no reason. The humor is awful. This is like going to your 20 year high school reunion, and the quarterback is wearing his letterman jacket, reliving the "glory days."

  • The first few loops, I was really interested in this game. After that, it went a place that it did not earn at all.

  • Oofta. Returnal looked like it would be a lot of fun, but it's so limiting. This is a rouge-like game for sure, and I honestly think that holds it back. On my second run, I made it through the first two bosses. This opened up a shortcut to jump to the third world. Unfortunately, jumping to the third world puts you at a severe health handicap. You effectively need to grind out health upgrades every time you die to really stand a chance. After repeatedly feeling like the main reason I was dying, was because I couldn't take enough hits, I had to abandon this game. I am curious about the story, but it's not worth the effort this game asks you to put in. You receive a weapon boost when you shortcut to a world you've been to. Either giving you a health boost as well, having you spend Ether to buy a permanent health upgrade, or implementing Hades's optional God Mode (where every time you die, your defense increases) would all be things that give this game more breadth. One could argue that is not what the game is going for, but for single player games in today's world, more options for accessibility should be encouraged.

  • This game wants to be Left 4 Dead. It's made by the same company that made Left 4 Dead. It's an Edgar game. It's wearing Left 4 Dead's skin, but it's not Left 4 Dead and is just really boring. Additionally, nothing counts unless you play online.

  • The story is ok, and the gameplay is straightforward. However, there's nothing like the feeling of shredding your guitar will sliding down a slope. This, the art, and the music have kept me playing a game I would normally have put down within the first 30 minutes.

  • It's been fun to play with my wife. We have not finished it, and I'm not sure if we will. The story is kind of bland, and I find myself really not liking the playable characters.

  • This is tough to judge. This feels like Rainbow Six Siege, but there are alien AI enemies. I think with a group, this could be really fun, and I enjoy watching people who are good play Siege. However, Siege is not for me. I had fun with it, but I don't have the patience to really enjoy it.

  • I don't know how to really classify this. It's a dungeon crawling RPG? I thought it would be more fun than it was. Fell off after a few hours.

  • I have yet to find an online game, and this game is on game pass. It's alright.

  • The lack of accessibility options and small-text means I have no idea what the story of this game is. The captions are small and are typically white on white. From what I can tell, you start as a child samurai, then grow up. You keep killing a bunch of people. It's boring and repetitive.

  • Some of the puzzles/movements were frustrating more than interesting. Fell off after a couple hours.

  • I played through the first major chunk of the game. It was interesting, but I was not really having fun or feeling compelled to continue.

  • Short, sweet, it's interesting. Not really sure what happened. Not bad.

  • That was fun for a bit, but ended up being too repetitive.

  • This is a cute game made in PS1 aesthetics with modern day controls. Fun for a bit, but then I got bored.

  • Pokemon Legends Arceus ate this game's lunch. It was a real let down. There are some neat ideas, but it's slogged down by a bunch of stuff that is just annoying.

  • Watched my wife/helped my wife play this game. It was fun! She enjoyed it and got 1000/1000 in under 5 hours. Pretty great introductory action game set in an Alice In Wonderland type world.

  • On paper, I should love this game. It's Marvel characters with Fire Emblem Three Houses interactions. In execution, I just kept feeling shorted. I kept forcing myself to play in hopes it would get better. I finished the first Act (or was it Chapter) and had to be done. I don't know why the elements just aren't gelling for me. It feels like you're a character interacting with the world instead of being a part of the world. You also cannot romance any of the superheroes. I cannot put my finger on what je ne sais quoi is not there. It's just like the Walmart brand of both Marvel and Fire Emblem: Three Houses, fine but not great. In roughly 20 hours of play, it crashed 10 times. It has a pretty good autosave system, but it got really annoying. People complained like crazy about Saints' Row (2022), which I had one crash in the whole game, but not about this.

  • It's fun some times. Got me to at least finish season 1 and win an NBA title with my created player. Just didn't fire consistently though. My team would at times just forget what they were doing (not play defense, stand by the hoop uncovered with the ball and just pivot around, etc.). Also, I can't believe there were not sliders to fine tune my experience. My player had a 95 in 3-pointers, a HoF badge that said it ignored defenders when shooting, a gold badge in catch & shoot and a gold badge in corner shots. I wanted to just drain 3's like Steph Curry, but the game wouldn't do that. Also, nobody would ever set a screen for me and roughly 50% of the time when I set a screen, my teammates would just stand there with the ball.

  • This was an interesting take on Snake that turned it into a rogue-like autobattler. Shout out to Brett of Skeleton House podcast for turning me on to this.

  • I never thought I would enjoy a MOBA, but this is fun. It helps that matches are relatively short. Some times it's frustrating not understanding why you're being dominated or why you are dominating. I enjoyed my time overall.

  • Chill game, it ran a little long in the tooth.

  • It's interesting to have a siren in a horror game. I kept expecting this game to build to something, but it just kind of doesn't. It was alright.

  • This was cute and fun. It only a couple hours long, but that is just fine. It stayed the right amount of time and had some fun variety.

  • This was cute, but ultimately I got bored. I don't think point & click adventures are for me, but I loved all the cat puns.

  • I understand that the goal of this game is to keep replaying it. I enjoyed my first run and escaped out of Petria. However, the charm wasn't quite there. The mechanics probably make more sense the more you play, but it really felt like I stumbled into the right actions. I made a lot of money gambling, so I spent it on food I didn't need. I wish I had known how much money I needed towards the end, because I was just a few dollars short. It was alright. Free on game pass is a great price.
