My all-time favourite games. In loose chronological order, starting with console games (numbers 1-21), then PC games ranging from older titles to more recent games.

List items

  • Bubble Bobble is a game that has managed to hold up really well over the years. It's one of those timeless classics that everybody knows and loves. Baron Von Blubba still gives me nightmares.

  • Ikare Warriors was a totally rad top down shooter on the C64 where you sprayed bullets everywhere as a Rambo-like dude. It was really difficult, too.

  • If you were looking for fighting games on the C64, IK was the top choice. The controls were tight and responsive in a way that made button-mashing a good idea if you wanted to lose bad.

  • Kikstart 2 for the C64 was awesome. It was basically a side-scrolling racer where you had to jump over obstacles and regulate the speed of your bike so you didn't crash. It even featured a fully functional level editor.

  • In Stunt Car Racer, you not only had to keep your vehicle on the elevated and devilishly narrow tracks, but also time nitro boosts in order to jump over gaps. It was very difficult, but immensely satisfying after nailing a huge jump.

  • If there's one NES game I'll never get tired of, it's SMB3. It really was a groundbreaking game at the time and it still holds up incredibly well today. Truly the sign of a classic.

  • It's impossible to deny a place on my favourites list for this SNES classic. It's an extremely well-made RPG with memorable characters (Frog!) and a sweet combat system.

  • Donkey Kong Country was possibly the first SNES game I ever saw and played and it just blew me away. A game very deserving of its classic status.

  • I figure there's gotta be at least one Final Fantasy game on my list so here it is. FF6 is just an incredibly solid and well-made RPG. One of the best games for the SNES, for sure.

  • Advance Wars 2 is pretty much identical to the first AW game with some minor additions that makes an already great game better. The campaign is much longer with larger maps so you'll get a lot of hours out of it. A very engaging and fun strategy game.

  • I didn't have to think long before picking my favourite of the three GBA Castlevania games. I'm not sure if it was because it was the first one I played but I just like everything about it, from the interesting card system to the awesome music.

  • Golden Sun is probably my favourite RPG for the GBA. Everything from the gameplay to the story progression feels extremely polished. The graphics and the soundtrack are really neat too.

  • Eternal Darkness is a horror game like no other with its unique (in)sanity meter and mindtricks. Add to this an eerie Lovecraftian story and some excellent sound design and you have an outstanding game that won't be forgotten anytime soon.

  • You could argue that Luigi's Mansion is a somewhat shallow and underwhelming game, but I simply adore it. The goofy haunted house theme and ghostbusters-like gameplay is super fun and entertaining.

  • Metroid Prime is a highly immersive game with gorgeous visuals and great music. The Metroid formula of collecting power-ups in order to access new locations is still present and works really well in the first-person format. Easily one of the best games for the Gamecube.

  • It's hard to find anything bad to say about KotOR. The story is great, the combat is great and it all feels as authentic as a Star Wars experience could be in a game format. Simply put, KotOR is one of the best RPGs I've ever played.

  • One of my first gaming experiences on the 360 definately lived up to my expectations both graphically and gameplay-wise. Gears Of War is just pure unadulterated action brutality that succeeds at being both fun and challenging.

  • As far as story-driven games go, Mass Effect is easily one of the most engaging games I've ever played. Not only does it have interesting characters and great dialogue in typical Bioware fashion, it also succeeds in creating an unbelievably rich and compelling universe.

  • The NES classic Bionic Commando gets a complete overhaul in this superb remake. Simple but awesome 2D gameplay and cool music makes this one a winner.

  • Beneath its wonderfully crazy presentation there lies an incredibly deep and addictive strategy board game that is surprisingly hard to stop playing. The new objectives based take on the classic Risk formula was a genious addition from the developers.

  • Ski or Die is one of the earliest PC gaming memories I have. It was a goofy and funny winter sports game with great gameplay and badass music.

  • Lemmings might look simple at first, but it quickly gets increasingly challenging with every level. As frustrating as it can be, it's a really great classic game.

  • Crystal Caves was one of many outstanding Apogee titles that only PC gamers had the pleasure of experiencing. It had a great balance between action, puzzle and platforming that made it unique.

  • If you want a really hard and challenging puzzle game then Supaplex is a perfect choice. I don't think I ever completed more than 1/4 of the levels in this obscure PC title.

  • A very fun strategy/action game that mixes Tetris-like building rounds with real-time battles. Easy to learn, but difficult to master.

  • Jazz Jackrabbit is an awesome platformer where you blaze through colorful worlds as a gun-toting rabbit. It's been described as "Sonic with guns", which is actually a pretty good way of putting it.

  • A clever and fun puzzle/platform game where you control three vikings that all have different abilities. You need to make use of all their abilties in order to solve puzzles and beat the level. It's very satisfying when you finally figure out a difficult puzzle.

  • The Chaos Engine is all about shooting stuff and trying to stay alive. The game is at its best when played co-op and each player pick vastly different mercenaries that complement each other.

  • As the title suggests, this is a pinball game. A very good one, I might add. There's great variety between the many tables and every one of them has an unique theme and goal as well as some really sweet music.

  • As far as top-down shooters go, Raptor is probably the best one I've played. There are a bunch of cool weapons upgrades you can buy and the levels and bosses are appropriately challenging.

  • An overlooked and sadly forgotten fighting game for the PC that had a surprising amount of depth to it. You earned money by fighting in tournaments which you could use to purchase upgrades for your robot such as power, speed, agility, armor, stun resistance, etc.

  • I might not be too much a fighting game dude but I do enjoy me some classic Mortal Kombat. UMK3 is without a doubt my favourite of the 2D games.

  • Diablo II is probably the best PC game ever made. I can't even begin to imagine how many hours I've wasted hacking and slashing my way through endless hordes of monsters and collecting epic loot. A game that truly never gets old for me.

  • Lord of Destruction is an excellent expansion that makes the original game even better. New character classes are tons of fun to play and so is the new fifth and final act. I would never play Diablo 2 without LoD ever again.

  • Experiencing Doom back in the 90s when it was newly released was mind-blowing. It was brutal, intense and totally terrifying. The FPS revolution had begun for real.

  • Once there was a golden age when LucasArts Entertainment point-and-click adventure games ruled the PC and DotT remains one of the most memorable ones for me. Absolutely wacky and hilarious.

  • I love all the Monkey Island games but the third one is easily my favourite of them. It's got plenty of charm and humor and the fabulous hand-drawn graphics fit the series really well.

  • An unforgettable LucasArts adventure game with great characters and excellent dialogue. It featured a very distinctive art style and film noir setting as well as a fantastic soundtrack.

  • The Worms series is known for its crazy weapons, destructible stages and intuitive pick-up-and-play gameplay that everyone can enjoy. Worms Armageddon is probably the best game in the franchise before they ruined it by going 3D.

  • Ignition is a simplistic top down racer with a lot of charm. I thought the graphics were really good at the time and I had tons of fun with it. It's easy to get into, but hard to put down.

  • A surprisingly fun and entertaining sim-like game that just makes time fly by. Who knew building amusement parks and rollercoasters could be so much fun?

  • One of the most addictive turn-based strategy games ever made. The first two Heroes of Might and Magic games are awesome as well, but the third game is the definately the pinnacle of the series.

  • I've always sucked at AoE II, but that has never stopped me from enjoying it tremendously. The high-unit count and constant building and expanding has always been something I've liked a lot.

  • While the first Red Alert game has probably taken up twice as much of my time, the sequel improves and implements so much new stuff that it just feels obsolete to play the original anymore. One of my favorite RTS games ever.

  • Max Payne is one of the few games I can be really proud of to have been made by a developer from my home country. One of the best things about the game is definately its excellent and engaging film noir story. Oh, and the actual shooting is pretty damn good too.

  • Max Payne 2 is more or less just a continuation of the bleak but excellent story started in the first game. The graphics are a bit better and overall it feels a bit more polished. A great sequel to a great game.

  • WC3 is an excellent RTS that needs no introduction. As always when it comes to Blizzard you have a game that just oozes with polish. I also have a slight preference of the Warcraft universe over Starcraft.

  • Even with its mindless nature (or maybe because of?) Painkiller manages to be tons of fun. The crazy weapons, random epic locations, never-ending monster hordes and ragdoll physics makes this an entertaining blast from the past.

  • Half-Life is already a legendary game that should need no further explanation as to why it's on this list. Aside from it's flawless gameplay mechanics it was also the first FPS game I played that had a story worth a damn.

  • The adventures of Gordon Freeman continues in this fantastic sequel. Valve managed to reproduce the success of Half-Life and create a sequel that was arguably even further ahead of its competitors at the time of its release.

  • Even though I was very late to the party (8 years, to be exact), it didn't stop me from being drawn into the fantastic world of Morrowind. Absolutely massive game.

  • I never had the oppurtunity to get into DotA much, but from what I can tell, League of Legends is essentially the same game, except more refined and streamlined. It's free to play, it's fun to play, and addictive enough to be classified as a drug.

  • An innovative physics-based puzzle game with fantastic gameplay and art design. World of Goo is simply impossible not to love. Oh, and the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard in a game.

  • Adrenaline-fueled tactical co-op action at its best. Very fun and addictive. The second best free game I've ever played.

  • If you enjoy killing tons of zombies with friends, then Left 4 Dead 2 is without a doubt the definitive zombie killing co-op experience. Not much has changed from its predecessor, but overall I think the new campaigns and gameplay tweaks makes it the better game of the two.

  • Trine is one of those rare games that I just fell in love with instantly. Everything from the lush and gorgeous visuals to the lighthearted fantasy story just oozes charm. Add to this some really solid and fun gameplay mechanics, and you have an instant classic in my book.

  • As a huge fan of the Heroes of Might and Magic series it's great to see the grandfather of that series make a triumphant return. Addictive and engrossing strategy RPG at its best!

  • Orcs Must Die smartly blends tower defense mechanics with third person shooting, and the result is a highly addictive and challenging experience. There are always many wildly differing strategies that are valid for beating any given level, which to me indicates a very well designed game.
