    Re-Numbered Franchise

    Concept »

Games usually have numbered sequels, like Final Fantasy I through XIII, but some series like to stop numbering their sequels, then number them over again. This is the concept of games that had a numbered series, then stopped, then got numbered again.

    Short summary describing this concept.

How to Spot a Re-Numbered Game

You can tell that a game got re-numbered when the series of games has a numbered formula, then the next installment of the series stops numbering, but adds a new subtitle. Example: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, then changes its subtitle to Tony Hawk's Underground, then starts re-numbering with Tony Hawk's Underground 2.

Not many game series has done this, but there is enough to earn a concept page. Below are the games that have been re-numbered.

What Is NOT a Re-Numbered Game

There's a lot of instances where you think a game is re-numbered, but is not. Final Fantasy X-2 for example, is not a re-numbered game because it is a spin-off. A re-numbered game must be part of the game's main series. Super Mario World and Sonic Adventure are part of the main Mario/Sonic series, whereas Final Fantasy X-2, or Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 for examples, are spin-offs.
