Guys?
....Guys?
Guess I should turn off the lights since I'm the last person in here
Sega
Company »
Sega is a long-running Japanese company responsible for arcade hits like Space Harrier, home consoles like the Dreamcast, and franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog.
Hey remember when SEGA were cool?
" Well...they made Valkyria Chronicles, didn't they? That was kind of cool... "Yeah that was really cool. So was Yakuza. What wasn't cool was them making Valkyria Chronicles 2 on PSP (although I own one, I want to see it on a nice bit TV in Hi-Res) and them constantly saying...NO YAKUZA 3 IN THE US, for about half a year until they were like...ok. They keep making the same mistake with Yakuza, poor advertising and releasing it in a hellstorm of ridiculous releases.
" Sega are pure evil. Pumping hedgehogs full of steroids. It's disgusting. "SEGA did not pump any hedgehog full of steroids. Dr Ovi Kintobor had an unfortunate lab accident and Sonic was created. He didn't intend for it to happen anyway.
And yes I remember...When Streets Of Rage, Strider and Speedball were the greatest games on the planet!
And in case anyone who has a job at SEGA is reading this, I don't mean offense towards any individual but it seems like the past 15 years have been a series of poor decisions in marketing, what games to publish, fan reactions, etc
With noteworthy exceptions like Shenmue or Bayonetta of course
Sega and cool never go together. It's like water and oil, they just don't mix.
Their attempt at cool was a bunch of bullshit about Blast Processing.
If Nintendo has some how maintained that cool kid on the block thing even today (even if there's some cooler kids around), Sega has been that poor retarded kid you can't keep your eyes off of.
There's the occasional spark of genius that tells you there's something more than the retard, but most of the time you know what to expect.
Sega was ever cool? The only people that I knew who owned a Genesis was because t heir parents wouldn't shell out the extra fifty dollars for a SNES.
Does anyone not remember OutRun? That was the most innovative driving game of its time. Plus, the soundtrack was awesome.
Sega Genesis was cool, I knew a lot more people that had a Genesis than had a SNES but that was a LONG time ago.
I remember playing the original Phantasy Star on my friend's Master System--that was when Sega was sort of cool. The Genesis was their zenith, though, for sure. That thing ran the whole game for awhile (SNES came in pretty late). I barely even remember the Saturn existing. The Dreamcast was cool, but it was gone before it came. Definitely remember the Genesis days, though. That was the shit. Ghouls 'n Ghosts blew my little head off. I played through all 3 Phantasy Stars that came our for it. Gunstar Heroes. Strider. Madden. It had it all.
I jumped ship once they got into the cheesy, over-priced peripherals war with TurboGrafx, though. They seemed more interested in putting out crappy add-ons that played glossed-over rehashes of Sonic than putting out new games. When the new Zelda came out , I sold my Genesis and picked up an SNES. Still look back at it fondly, though.
I am kinda in the same boat with you... I remember when sega used to be my favorite vidja game developers and they had all these great games on the dreamcast .
Jet Grind Radio... Shenmue... even powerstone was hella fun.
Now that some time has passed... I just can't see the same sega anymore.
They were really retarded about the cutting out of hostess bars in Yakuza 3.
I still had faith in them but now... now I am not so sure.
Well atleast they're doing well in Japan still.
I loved SEGA. I was a Genesis owner when I was a wee lad.
They haven't really done anything to me personally to hurt me, so I'm still cool with SEGA.
I just wish they'd APPLY THEMSELVES, GODDAMMIT!
I guess I don't understand the question. Do I 'remember when Sega was cool' implies that they are no longer cool. (I've never been a big fan of Sonic but I really do like Yakuza.) So, at what point did Sega become 'uncool'?
After this, I never want to look at SEGA again.
" Sega was cool but then came 3D. "Oh the ignorance of youth. SEGA's Yu Suzuki is practically solely responsible for arcade games having modern shaded and textured 3D. His impact goes back as far as the pseudo 3D of Space Harrier, Hang On, After Burner and the rest of the sprite scaling series and specifically Two Player 3D Combat which he practically invented on his own with Virtua Fighter. SEGA has always been cool, even the new Sonic 3D Racers is getting some great reviews despite its shallow gameplay. Sonic the brand has just lost its cool since the games after Sonic Heroes. Sonic Adventure was awesome and any person who thinks it wasn't either never played the game when it was released or never cared for the 3D aspect in the first place and so bore a grudge against Sonic 3D games irrationally.
Apprantly that's not ALL bad...
That said, i havn't played it, so don't quote me on that.
SEGA's main problem seems to be their horrible timing in releasing stuff, and lack of proper advertisement for their products. Especially so with the Dreamcast, poor thing was released at such a horrible time, even though it was a pretty damn awesome system, it couldn't stand up to the ps2 and xbox.
