@cannibaltooth: Definitely one of Jason's funnier puns. It was funny how he was stone faced after saying it.

BTW Brad. It's Spellbreak, not Spellbreaker. I made that mistake for a bit myself.

Counter-point to the conversation about the look of consoles. I actually think the Series X is the worst looking one. To me, when you stand it up like that, it looks like a tiny PC tower. That screams, "it's like your PC but weaker." Both the S and the PS5 look like different enough things where it doesn't draw that comparison in my mind.

Not a thing that's going to sway my opinion one way or another, and I'm sure they did the focus testing to verify what people actually think of it (and other possible alternatives), but that's the thing that'd worry me in the design process.

Nintendo hasn't done any substantial work on ports since Wind Waker HD. Everything after that has been the bare minimum of effort. Looking at the 3D All Stars video it looks like they didn't even change the Gamecube button prompts to the Switch buttons. Come the fuck on.

@ohhi_itsjoe: I 100% agree with you. I'm also amazed at how much time is spent talking about how the things look when it literally never ends up mattering. It's like every time people get so feverish about having a new console that they can't help nitpicking every little thing, and then it just completely goes away save for in those areas where people still fight about consoles, etc...on the internet.

As someone who has been playing Destiny 2 since launch, uh, what version of Destiny have they been playing? Once you do the story Destiny is nothing but repeated missions. The strikes are never different, other than a few spots where it can either spawn like Fallen or Cabal. The story audio is always exactly the same and the bosses are always the same. Hell, since the original launch a lot of the strikes that were added are just the story missions with "well they're at it again" dialogue. Repeated content is just what these games are.

If the Xbox Series X turns out to be 500 dollars like the leaks claim, then Sony has no choice but to match that price or go slightly lower. Them coming out and announcing their PS5 is going to cost 600 dollars or more is going to get met with a huge backlash. Not to mention Microsoft added a monthly payment plan that goes with getting a Battle Pass subscription for their consoles. Sony has to really think before they make their next move. Advantage Microsoft.

As far as Mario 3D All Stars. That game to me is a sleazy cash in. Nintendo is notorious for doing the bare minimum when it comes to their products. But I watched their announcement video of the game on Youtube, and millions of Nintendo fanboys claim they are getting it day one. Nintendo knows their audience, unfortunately.

Unabashed Nintendo Fanboy here. I sold my WiiU and all my Wii/WiiU games when I got the switch. Simply had no more room for that WiiU screen. I miss playing Mario64, Galaxy and 3D World and want to play it with my kids now that they're old enough to enjoy games with me. I care very little about graphical upgrades and so, yes, I totally preordered the whole set as soon as I could.

Quick question: In Japan we have a system where if you are a Nintendo Online subscriber you can buy 2 first party games for roughly $100 with their ticket system. Is that option not available in the states?

Then you'd just get too-faithful US$60 remakes that run worse (at least that's what I hear about Link's Awakening).

It does really suck that Nintendo doesn't care much for its back catalog outside of making an easy profit out of it. Then again, flip side to that is maybe that's how it has lasted so long. Hearing how the collection is a #2 best-seller on Amazon... that's not all fanatics. Taking a more detached look at it, I guess it's a nice thing for a parent to buy for their kid(s) and themselves. It is 2-3 good games in one shot.

Oh well, Hyrule Warriors 2 is coming so I'm happy.

Frank Cifaldi out here pitching the Criterion Collection approach for selling old games and all Nintendo puts ahead is basic ports to the Switch for full price. Bad.

One mans trash design is another's art piece. To counter your counter point....

I think the Series X is the best looking, i wish i could build a PC in that case. Its one black monolith. To me that design both screams minimalist, and power. Which are both things i like in a case design.

If i had the chance i would swap every component from my Ncase M1 into something like the Series X. But that won't happen with the current landscape of PC hardware.

I think that Series S look hideous. Part of it is the white color scheme, but as I said in another thread, that giant round fan port makes it look like a cheap off-brand walkman you'd get at Chuck-E-Cheese for like 1000 tickets.

@odinreborn: The issue I see is that anyone with a modest PC has a way to play all those games at higher quality for free. Nintendo doesn't even put in the effort to compete with open source emulation software that has been out for 10+ years, they just expect you to be happy to pay them 60 bucks for the same games you have played 10 times already.

the answer to jeffs worries around 2:31:00 is live in a social democracy like norway, where power is governd by the state and sold to the consumer. The result is a product that gets valued by how happy the consumer is with the product and not how much money the investors makes.

You're correct. Unlike the Switch(s) online offering, the Wii-U had an excellent eShop library of games you can buy and download. Nintendo classics from all of their past consoles, to Neo-Geo games, Turbo Grafx 16, including many of the CD based games and much more. It's pretty sad when you realize Nintendo put more effort into allowing gamers to play classic games off a failing console's online service then they're doing now with the success of the Switch. But that's Nintendo for you.

If Mario 64 was a novelty unavailable anywhere until this switch release then fine. However that is not the case at all and it is still available now on wii u eshop. That thing has been readily available in one form or another since 2004 on DS. Releasing that at a premium as some vaulted release is shit.

Nintendo should be held to a higher standard instead of getting a free pass at every turn.

Jeff, I'm sorry, but I can't think of anything I'd want less than a Call of Duty character in Tony Hawk. Fuck that shit, man. I don't want to be reminded of how the military industrial complex glorifies war through video games in my lighthearted punk rock skateboarding nostalgia game. No thanks.

@curufinwe: For me personally if I were to add a central system or two part AC it would not be the simple task of buying and installing one. I would need to re-do the wiring in my house. The addition of a simple 10,000btu air condition would trip my power every five minutes. At the moment re-wiring would be quite the expense.

Not sure how MS' plan here is at all profitable? Does anyone actually know how gamepass is sustainable? What's this look like in three years? Feel like this is just too good to be true. They must be eating a huge loss with that price. It could work out but man I just have trouble buying they have a 300 dollar box that is signicantly better than current ones

MS wants to get you into their ecosystem. They may be taking an initial loss on the console, however economies of scale generally mean profits over the lifetime of the console.

They offer Game Pass as a low-risk way for people to try games, with the hopes that people will eventually buy the games they like.

Also, you may be the only person on this site that cares whether MS is making a profit or not.

Ha. I didn't say it was a trash design. I don't personally dislike it at all (in fact, I think I like it more than the PS5, on an aesthetic level). I just don't necessarily agree with the idea of that particular design making it scream power. I think compared to the S, it absolutely does. But compared to a PC, I think maybe not. I know case size doesn't actually equate to power, I'm just trying to look at it from the viewpoint of someone at best buy trying to decide if they want to by a pre-made gaming PC or an Xbox Series X.

The avengers story is pretty great, surprised me a lot. Combat improves significantly once you level up and better understand the moves and what you can do with them. They nailed the characterizations of the avengers and the world they've built. I got completely hooked and now want to further explore the comics and media that support this new universe.

As someone who never played a musou, Hyrule Warriors back in 2014 was an awesome surprise to me. I think those types of games get a bad rap because people play them for a few hours and don't get into the harder challenges where the games become more demanding strategically. It becomes less about just mashing X and occasionally pressing Y and more about optimizing clearing speed and movement so you can maintain control of the map, because if it gets away on you it goes real bad real fast.

Also, the recent Dragon Warrior and Fire Emblem warrior games have been great, with Persona 5 Scramble being a pretty big departure from standard musou combat. I like the direction Musou is going in general, with it simply being a formula to use on existing franchises, and changing the games significantly to mold them into that franchises style.

Crazy for Nintendo to just drop what will end up being one of my most anticipated games of the year on a random Tuesday.
