Little faces, big heads, can't lose.

I've gone and committed to a comment before the one minute mark again, so nothing funnier better occur to me in the next hour and thirty four minutes.

The first Police Academy movie was an R-rated sex comedy. Vinny and Alex's descriptions are certainly true of the sequels, though.

I kept waiting for them to mention "the one in which Arnold is Russian" and then they even discussed Jim Belushi, but never mentioned Red Heat. I just kept waiting for someone to mention it.

no but it does give me the oppourtunity to reply and add that The Wrong Guy with Dave Foley is a pretty good fugitive esque comedy/parody

Speed 2 was directed by Jan de Bont, who also did the first Speed.

Joel Schumacher has done some pretty good movies pre- and post-Batman.

I'm not going to say it makes it a quality movie but the extended director's cut of the Total Recall remake adds more depth to it. In that version Ethan Hawke plays the original version of the main character who give the message to Colin Farrell and they play a lot more with are the events of the movie real or a dream, where as the theatrical is played as it's definately real.

I haven't seen it in maybe 10-15 years, but I've watched Loaded Weapon many times and loved it. Tight shot of Emilio Estevez leafing through a magazine, then a wide shot of him standing in a pile of all of the stupid subscription inserts that fell out is a good ass bit.

Also the being followed scene, then turning to lose them. So good.

edit: oh shit Vinny also describes that scene, lol.

@bestyhammar: hopefully he gets around to seeing The Killer and A Better Tomorrow. The sequel felt like a reshoot of the first movie. Having a different main character played by the same actor was weird but I get why they did it.

Is the chat instructed to not help? I'm surprised Alex hasn't been cajoled into using the Rush Adapters more often. (Especially when using them smooths the game out even more.)

@merxworx01: A Better Tomorrow II is really good, as long as you can get past the secret twin trope, it's easily one of my favorite movies of all time...I feel like The Replacement Killers is the unsung classic of John Woo's catalog though, granted I haven't seen it in close to 10 years.

@anarchovelo: Yeah, I enjoy both movies. In fact I think I still have them all on VHS. It's just weird seeing the twin, that as far I can tell starts out as a cook and decides to take on mantle of a hotshot gun fighter. Oh well, good movies nonetheless.

Total Recall is 100% intentionally ambiguous. The movie goes out of its way to remind viewers that he might just be experiencing a simulation midway through it (a notion that Arnold rejects), and literally every single plot point that the Total Recall salesman tells him about the package ends up happening. Plus the fade to white at the end as they discuss the prospect that everything that happened might not be real.

On the other hand, implanting in someone's memory that they murdered hundreds of people (including their wife!) and successfully teraformed Mars probably isn't the most ethical business model and would cause significant cognitive dissonence in your daily life.. But then again, people in the movie do refer to the Total Recall Co. as a bunch of brain butchers, so who knows!

@superjoe: Holy shit you're totally right, my bad, I totally blanked that when I picked up the DVD 15 years ago on a John Woo/Chow Yun Fat buying spree...that is quite embarrassing.

Edit: Ah, he was an executive producer...I believe his name was prominent on the cover and that's where the confusion occured

Weren't the Beatles like super popular in Japan?

Also, one of the themes in this video reminded me of the John Cena theme and I'm surprised Dan didn't comment on it.

Also, a Film and 40s where they crew does Hot Shot/Loaded Weapon/Airplane! type spoof movies would be hilarious.

@ilserpente: Keep listening. Alex eventually concedes that it may have been written to be ambiguous but it really wasn't.

While I don't feel quite that strongly (I think there is a decent amount of wiggle room), I do agree with the overall sentiment. Verhoeven wanted it to be ambiguous and left hints, but the movie itself takes them apart even faster than he can put them down. It is too much of a "stupid Ahnold action movie" to really keep the thread going and, as a result, things like ultraviolence make it seem more "real" than otherwise. With a different cast (and a different director) it would have worked a lot better, but also probably wouldn't have been as entertaining.

It reminds me a lot of one of Verhoeven's other films: Starship Troopers was supposed to be a huge satirical deconstruction of war movies and come across as blatant propaganda. Instead, it was a lot of cool action sequences, gratuitous nudity, Dougie Howser as a Nazi, and corny "memes". If you squint at it you can definitely see the satire but the movie works against itself and just feels like a generic action movie because of it.
