The Very Online Show 02: The Emoji Illuminati

Where do emojis even come from? Who designs them and how do they get included with all the others? Lucy James drives this episode of The Very Online Show and uncovers the very strange but true reality of our increasingly emoji-ridden world and its impact on language, culture and even law.

Tamoor Hussain and Lucy James are very online. Jeff Bakalar is only sorta online.

Just to touch on Kleenex being synonymous with "facial tissue," this is actually a negative thing for a brand. This is called "genericization," turning the brand into a "proprietary eponym," which has extremely negative consequences for the brand. Due to the brand becoming synonymous with the generic version of a product, i.e. everyone saying "I need to get Kleenex," but actually referring to the storebrand facial tissue they have and buy regularly while using the word "Kleenex" to refer to the them. This phenomenon completely destroys any power and reputable qualities of the actual Kleenex brand facial tissue, thus damaging the brand's image and sales over time.

Here are some brands you may not even know were brands due to genericization.

- WD40, Taser, Xerox, Popsicle, Dumpster, Zipper, Escalator, Flip Phone, Laundromat
