A Hail Mary for Devil Survivor 2 in Europe

UK publisher Ghostlight isn't seeing much retailer interest, so it's throwing profits to the wind and looking towards fans for help.

No Caption Provided

It might come as a shock, but companies are still releasing games for the original DS. That includes UK publisher Ghostlight, a company focused on distributing Japanese RPGs to Europe.

Its next release, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2, hasn’t seem much interest from retailers, and the company is throwing the publisher equivalent of a hail mary to save the game.

“Basically, the DS is sort of coming to the end of its life,” said Ghostlight community manager and public relations representative Ross Brierley to me earlier today. “The 3DS has been out for a few years now, hasn't it? Retailers, understandably, can’t concentrate on that and the Vita, to some extent. There’s just not much room on the shelves for DS games, which means we haven’t had anywhere near as many orders as we need to actually make the game viable.”

If Ghostlight receives 1,800 pre-orders for Devil Survivor 2, it’ll make the game. 1,800 pre-orders would cover the cost of manufacturing Devil Survivor 2 and that’s about it. At this point, Ghostlight isn’t hoping to turn Devil Survivor 2 into its most profitable release, and has turned its focus to finding a financially viable way to have the game released in any capacity.

“We’ve done the work,” said Brierley. “We’ve tested the game, we’ve got it all approved, we’ve had it go through the ratings board, and rather than just have it sit on our computers forever, we’d like fans to be able to play it. It’s a bit of a shame otherwise.”

Devil Survivor 2 was late bloomer, no matter how you slice it. The tactical RPG was released by Atlus in Japan in July 2011, and showed up here in February 2012. At this point, we’re talking about a full two years since the game’s native release date, and more than two years into the lifespan of 3DS. It’s no surprise retailers have mostly moved on by now. Strangely enough, Atlus is even releasing an updated version of the game, Devil Survivor 2: Break Record, with new content on 3DS later this fall.

But Ghostlight announced the game, and, admirably, doesn’t want to give on its fans.

“We get comments on our blog, we’ve had emails asking for it,” said Brierley, “and it just seems a bit of a shame to go to people and say ‘no, it’s not coming out’ without trying pretty much everything we can to get it out.”

And so this is that last ditch effort. If this doesn’t work, Devil Survivor 2 isn’t coming out. If it doesn’t hit 1,800 sales, Ghostlight isn’t going to sink the company in pursuit of a game most people don't want. The campaign launched early on Thursday, and its fate remained murky. Brierley didn’t have sales numbers in front of him, but said the website had been up and down all day. Having the website go down is, at least, one good sign.

“The hamsters that run it are suffering,” he said. “We’re trying to get more, at the moment, but they are suffering, at this point. Hopefully, we can the website more equipped to cope with this level of traffic while people are still excited about it. It’s not great timing at the moment. [laughs]”

Orders close for Devil Survivor 2 on August 31. There are two bundles available, and the total needs to hit 1,800 orders. If the quota is hit before, the game will go into manufacturing sooner.

The DS isn't region locked so not releasing in 1 region isn't as bad as on the 3DS.

And yeah, they could just release it on the 3DS eshop at this point.

The eShop doesn't currently support DS titles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't DS titles "backwards compatible" with the 3DS?

Also, I hate to be that guy - @patrickklepek, sorry if I'm mistaken, but you meant to write "...Ghostlight announced the game, and, admirably, doesn’t want to give up on its fans", correct? The sentence comes off as confusing otherwise.

@patrickklepek: Ghostlight is the same company that did the UK port of Devil Survivor: Overclocked, the 3ds update of Devil Survivor. Except something went horribly wrong and the game would crash as soon as you summoned a monster, which is 90% of the game.

They took months to fix the bug as it was so weird and unusual even atlus was called in and took this much time.

Imported this when it first came out, but hope these guys hit their target. Also, what others said about Atlus needing an EU deal. I don't want to be having trouble tracking down the likes of Radiant Historia anymore. I'm too old.

Ghostlight don't deserve to translate or release anything ever again after the botched job they did with Devil Survivor Overclocked for the 3DS.

It came about 2 years later than the US version and it was 100% identical in its translation. The only thing they did was put in game breaking bugs which took them & Nintendo MONTHS to fix and pass through cert.

Atlus need to get an EU publisher so badly it's not even funny.

This is rather amusing, considering Atlus itself is the one responsible for all your issues with the release. Ghostlight were never given access to the game's source code, so they had to wait for Atlus to make the changes to the code necessary for getting it trough Nintendo of Europe's certification. And then once the bug was discovered, they again had to wait for Atlus to make the patch.

If you want to blame Ghostlight for anything, it's not testing the game enough. But then, the same could probably be said for Atlus and Nintendo's certification team. Most likely this was one of those bugs that doesn't show up devkits, and doesn't become apparent until the game is playable on a regular retail unit.

BlackLagoon explained it above, but it was actually because of Atlus that the patch took such a long time. Ghostlight had to wait for Atlus to fix it since they weren't given access to the game code.

@petiew: I was not saying Ghost light should burn because of it. Unlike Monkfish seems to think.

But yeah that would do it Atlus taking its sweet time, I was following the situation except on the news blog they were not as informative.

Not testing the game enough? ENOUGH? They didn't fucking test it *once* At any point did they ever think "maybe we should put this into a retail 3DS?"

If they're so incompetent they can't even test a game like they how can they ever be trusted to release anything again?

Atlus just need to self publish in the EU.

I... bought a 3DS and got an import copy...

I bear no ill will against Ghostlight but they are (at least from Australia's english speaking perspective) a bit of an unnecessary hoop to getting our hands on Atlus games.

It's a fantastic game though and I hope they get the numbers they need, but at the end of the day there has to be a smarter way around this stuff.

Why don't they just give it a digital release on the 3ds? I'm not that familiar with the 3ds but I think it plays ds games right? Either way I think they can go a different route.... Kinda sounds like they started making it too late.

@agentboolen: Europe will now and always get shafted on videogames, it's just how it works. Ghostlight are admirable in that they really do care and listen to fans, but with how delayed releases are here it's always faster and simpler to just turn to piracy. It didn't help that their release of Devil Survivor: Overclocked shipped with a game breaking bug, but they're our best shot at getting these games. Releasing it on the e-shop would probably take even longer.

I doth my cap to Ghostlight for trying to get this out of the door. Those guys clearly give a shit about what they do.

That being said, if there ever was an audience for this game, most of them will likely have imported it by now.

I hope I'm wrong though. I'd at least like to see Ghostlight rewarded for their efforts.

That's kinda harsh. You have to get pretty deep into the game before either of the bugs becomes an issue, and again, Atlus did all the development work on it. There's rarely any reason to go looking for software bugs in something that's already been finished and released, when all you've done is asked for a build with extra 'u's in a few words.

Reading the review at rpgfan.com makes it sound like a great game. I'd love to have a JRPG with dialog choices like a Bioware game and it says it has that.

I placed a pre-order. I usually don't, but in this case I wanted to help support these kinds of games being released in EU.

I got the US version from my regular shop here in the EU some time back.

I reckon most Atlus fans here in the EU have done the same, or had it imported.

Why do companies keep on releasing games over here so much later despite the fact that the platform they're on is regionfree? Do they need to translate it all for the non-english speaking regions?

I wouldn't bother tbh, the longer wait just means they'll miss out on sales because gamers will get the US version.

Seems they are some way off the goal of 1800 they don't even have half. I feel sad that it is so few people interested. Sure many have bought the US version but still it should be able to get more than 700 pre-orders. I am still hoping. It would be pretty sweet to have my name in the manual of a game.
