It's like Cave Story, except with 3D! Oh, you saw that coming? OK, cool.
Games Radar brings word of Cave Story 3D for the Nintendo 3DS, a 3D remake of the original Cave Story that’ll feature new character models and re-imagined areas, as well as new easter eggs, new music, and even some brand new areas to explore. The original creator of the game, Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, is supervising the project, which is certainly in contrast to the original Cave Story. Amaya made that one all by himself.
In publisher NIS America’s eyes, Cave Story 3D is a “fully reconstructed” version of the shooter, made to take advantage of what the 3DS has to offer (namely, depth).
As you’ll see in the screen below, the Nicalis team behind the project has created a 3D ‘spline’ that maps to the game’s original 2D grid. So, Cave Story 3D is still a 2D game at heart, but the new curves will offer up some different looks at environments, as well as some new ways for you and enemies to traverse them.

The main character’s really cute -- he’s got a scarf, he’s got this really great hat, and we’ve modeled him, along with the accompanying cast, as well as the enemies. The weapons are in full 3D, all the items, everything you see in the world has this level of depth that you’ll be able to really utilize with the 3DS’s stereoscopics,” Rodriguez said.
NIS isn't talking release date and pricing yet, but as Cave Story 3D is a retail cart release, you can probably expect the pricing to be in line with most other 3DS games. Pixel is also at work on a brand new, original game that's in the pre-production stages as well.

Sounds good, also it's good the hear Pixel is working on a new game, that guy has talent.
edit: I just hope they don't butcher the kickass original music as they did with the wiiware version, if they do then just keep the classic ones as an option.

Now hang on there a second... While I realise the image is concept art, I don't think people have to be so cynical. I'm happy the game is getting a remake release. And I'm pretty sure the original creator is going to keep the same level of charm present in the original release.
Well this is completely out of the blue. Cave Story is a damn good game so it's good to see it going full retail, but I'd only pick it up if there's more to it than just Cave Story but 3D.
I love Cave Story but... again? I'm happy to hear Pixel is making a new game, but I wish his efforts had been focused on a new title a long time ago instead of a third rerelease of a free game I played in '04...
I played the PC version a few years back but stopped because my computer back then slowed down significally a bit into the game. I've been thinking of getting the Wiiware version, but if this turns out good I could see myself getting it over the other releases.
I've always liked the design for the main character, mainly because he reminds me of old school anime designs such as Red from pokemon.

Ok, so I think people are gonna be split on this. Either, A. They will love it because it's cave story, there's new stuff, and the 3d could be promising, or B. They will hate it because it no longer is pixel art, which made up a large amount of the original game's charm.
Or C. which i can't quite figure out. Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if they gave it a "Classic" mode anyway.
@IamNOTatalkingpony: It's just the whole "ports+3D" thing further annoying me. That concept art is great-looking, don't get me wrong, but it won't look like that. You know Turtles In TIme: Reshelled? It'll probably be closer to that. It'll lose its pixelly charms.
Loved Cave Story and it's great to hear that Pixel will be able to make some more money from his fantastic game, but I'm not sure that it needs another new version. I can only hope that the music remixes are better this time around (I'm still in love with the original soundtrack, and it just doesn't sound the same on the Wii).
I wanted to buy this but have been waiting for the DSi release for months. I guess it's never coming. I was going to ask if I should wait for this one or simply download the PC version but it seems most of you here are quite against the switch to 3D.
@Captainlunchbox: I think Reshelled didn't work because A) that game's mad short with inifinite continues and B) old-school brawlers just aren't very fun anymore. Cave Story 3D (should) retainits enjoyable gameplay, so I don't think these changes will have a negative effect.
