E3 2011 Live Blog: Sony

The second of the three hardware manufacturers holds their annual Press Conference. What will be the final name of the new Sony Handheld system?

It's the last of Monday's four press conferences, and it's a big one: Sony takes to the stage at 5:00 PM PST to talk about the future of the PlayStation 3 and what's coming from Sony's new handheld.

Will we finally find out the NGP's final product name? How many PS2 consoles have shipped in the last year? And will we see any brand new game reveals? Find out during today's Sony E3 Press Conference.

Click the link to watch the Sony Press Conference!

That's it for the Day One Press Conferences! Tune back into Giant Bomb in one hour at 8:00PM PST to watch the first of our Live E3 Broadcasts! See you then!

[6:58] And that's the end of the Sony Press Conference. The PS Vita has an official name and a price to match the 3DS. But Nintendo has a new console on the horizon. What news does Nintendo bring? Check back on the site tomorrow at 9AM PST, where we'll liveblog the Nintendo Press Conference! For now, thank you all for watching and reading our liveblogs!

[6:56] The PlayStation Vita wifi-only package will retail in the US for $249. The 3G model will retail for $349. Both packages will be available by this holiday season.

[6:56] The Vita segment ends with a game montage. Is that a new Tenchu game in development for Vita?

[6:53] Sony has announced that over 80 titles are currently in development are in development for the Vita.

[6:50] Cole from inFamous will join the fighters of Street Fighter X Tekken. Now THAT'S the weird crossover.

[6:48] Street Fighter X Tekken takes the screen! The new fighting game cross over will also arrive on the PlayStation Vita as well.

[6:45] Little Big Planet is also coming to Vita.

[6:40] Next, ModNations Racers takes the PSV screen. Players will be able to build maps as well as race.

[6:37] Ruin has an extensive community site, as well as Facebook and Twitter support. So that's awesome. Save data can be shared between PS3 and PSP.

[6:35] The next game at the conference is Ruin, an action role playing game that connects to the PS3. It... looks like Torchlight. Not even "like Diablo." It's like Torchlight.

[6:29] The first footage of Uncharted: Golden Abyss on the PlayStation Vita is on screen now. It looks pretty good... almost as good as a PS3 game. Players can move throughout the environment and fight enemies with either the traditional buttons or the PSV touch pad.

[6:28] Kaz Hirai announced the Near system, which will allow users to connect to other users easily. Sounds like a version of Nintendo's street pass.

[6:25] The PlayStation Vita will be supported online using the "most reliable network in America"... which, according to Sony, means the AT&T Online network. Queue an audible groan from the audience.

[6:24] The PlayStation Vita will bridge the line between your entertainment and your real life. The PlayStation Vita blurs the lines between entertainment and real life.

[6:23] The NGP is officially called... The PlayStation Vita. Just like everyone said.

[6:22] Kaz Hirai was very quick to mention how smartphone gaming compared to the graphics of the PSP. Not the best way to take the fight to other handhelds. Hirai also describes how the PlayStation Suite will bring PlayStation games to other platforms, such as the Xperia Play and other Android platforms.

[6:20] Kaz Hirai takes the stage to formally announce the New PlayStation portable, and it's new games on stage. But first, Kaz Hirai thanks the users of the PlayStation for their patience during the online outage.

[6:18] Trenton is now describing the new series of EA Games containing exclusive content only on the PS3. In SSX, PlayStation owners will have access to a specific map. Need For Speed: The Run ships with 3 exclusive cars. Battlefield 3 ships with a copy of Battlefield 1943 on the Blu-Ray.

[6:15] Trenton announced that Saints Row The Third will have an exclusive multiplayer mode on the PS3. continuing on the THQ front, Trenton throws to a video of the new Star Trek third person shooter coming to consoles.

[6:14] Ken Levine pulled an NGP out of his pocket! Who saw that coming? Levine announced that the team at Irrational is making a new game, set in the BioShock universe, as an NGP exclusive. THAT was a neat reveal.

[6:11] A BioShock Infinite gameplay video. Now Ken Levine is coming onscreen to talk about integrating move controls into BioShock Infinite. This is not as exciting a reveal as when Gabe Newell announced Portal 2 on the PS3 last year.

[6;09] Trenton has announced that Dust 514 will be available in Open Beta by the years end, and will release in the Spring of next year.

[6:05] The folks from CCP take the stage! Is Eve Online coming to consoles? No, they're announcing that Dust 514, CCP's long in development FPS game that connects directly to EVE Online. CCP have announced that the shooter is a PS3 exclusive.

[6:05] Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time. Coming Soon!

[6:03] New game from Sony: It's the return of Sly Cooper!

[6:01] With inFamous 2 done, the focus shifts to a new FMV trailer for Starhawk.

[6:00] Jack Trenton describing the player-created content in inFamous 2. Trenton also announced that they're adding the Move Controller support to Little Big Planet 2 this September.

[5:59] inFamous 2 demo next. A brand new gameplay trailer is onscreen.

[5:54] Medieval Moves is an on-rails game where players can switch between sword slashes, bow and arrow attacks, and ninja star throws in combat. No Nav Controller is required. It kinda looks like Killer 7, but with melee attacks.

[5:52] A new game from the team behind Sports Champions takes the screen. The game is called Medieval Moves.

[5:49] Kobe Bryant: "Give me the thing, man."

[5:49] Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Kobe Bryant!

[5:48] NBA 2K11 takes the screen, complete with move controls. Apparently, it's more realistic to play basketball with a Move controller.

[5:46] In addition, Sony has announced that they're releasing a low cost 3D TV bundle-including a 24 inch 3D TV, two pairs of 3D glasses, an HDMI cable, and a copy of Resistance 3--for $499.

[5:44] Jack Trenton has also announced new HD and 3D rerelease including a collection containing the two PSP God of War games (Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus) as as a second bundle containing ICO and Shadow of the Colossus.

[5:42] Trenton has announced the Resistance 3 Sharpshooter Bundle, which contains Resistance 3, a Playstation Move, Navigation controller, the PlayStation Eye, and the Sharpshooter controller frame all for $150 this September.

[5:40] After a brief 3D demo, we jump ahead further in the level. Troops are trying to move a power core away from assaulting Chimera forces.

[5:38] Insomniac takes the stage to show off Resistance 3.

[5:32] That ship is on its side! It's like the Poseidon Adventure! The Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta starts on June 28th. Naughty Dog and Sony also announced a deal with Subway (yes, the sandwich maker) that will allow players to get their hands on the full multiplayer section of Uncharted before the game launches on November 1, 2011.

[5:31] That ship is filling up with water! It's like that first level of Modern Warfare, but it's Drake who os drowning!

[5;30] Drake is going down to ship's brig to destroy Metal Gear Ray.

[5:28] There is a pool shifting back and forth on that ship! Who wants to play Marco Polo.... on a ship?

[5;27] The Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception demo starts now.

[5:25] The apology has transfered into the feature and product pitch for the PlayStation 3. Discussion of the music service, Netflix. Trenton says that the PlayStation 3 is the biggest single console for Netflix.

[5:24] The form of the apology seemed to say that the gaming press made a bigger deal of the Sony Online outage than they needed to out of a desire for controversy. A weird little bit of spin.

[5:23] They opened the PlayStation Press Conference acknowledging the Sony Online outage... and then Jack Trenton made a joke! Vinny should have bet money on that one.

[5:22] Hello to everyone watching the E3 Press Conference from PlayStation Home.

[5:21] Sony: a company of smooth black plastic. And now Jack Trenton takes the stage.

[5:19] Everyone in the audience is wearing 3D glasses and fingerless gloves.

[5:18] The NGP! The Move Controller! Look at all of these products.

[5;17] The show begins! It's a product montage!

[5:05] There are now less food trucks and more pitch black darkness. So... It's an improvement?

[5:00] Finally! A Sony Press Conference... Preview! Now we can see what the biggest and best in the game industry get from an LA Food Truck!

[4:55] Just five minutes until Sony takes the stage? Will we see Jack Trenton beat Kevin Butler to death with a pool cue? Let's find out together!

I thought that was a pretty great Press Conference overall. Quite a lot of exclusive content, a few good reveals, and a very surprisingly low price point for the Vita.

I preferred Sony's way of handling their motion controls. "We got some third-party and even first-party games that aren't all sports-related supporting this stuff. Here you go"

Absolutely. They showed off some really cool stuff and managed to avoid any Mr. Caffeine type disasters; they treated the audience like adults and I think the event came out better for it.

really hope nintendo has something good up their sleeve for tomorrow, thats two not even disappointing but ineffectual press conferences, well MS was just bland but i guess sonys wasn't too bad, plus the actual 'show' of it was pretty spectacular - the screens etc

though i must admit i was expecting more from sony

it seems, granted i've only been paying attention to E3 for the past five or six years, but it seems less about showing the future and more about stating the present, there aren't any surprises, could be the lack of a new generation - hopefully remedied by nintendo - but E3s kind of been in a rut of late

and does this mean that Sony technically has four consoles out at the minute PS2 / PS3 / PSP / PSV(?)

the pricing for Vita was good news, it'd be hard to say no, haven't seen any software except little deviants to entice me but if there was something i'd have to consider it, it looks like a great piece of hardware

and the 'inexpensive' 3DTV came out of nowhere, i think thats a great idea, and actually a good price for what's on offer, if anything from the conference that was the thing i was most interested in

$249 is a great price for the Vita.  It would be a real shame if they cut the memory to only 256 MB to get it to that price, though.  Honestly what does another 256 MB of memory cost, like 10 bucks maybe?  512 MB would put the Vita on par with PS3 and 360 and give developers a lot more flexibility.

@SuperSambo: I thought the MS one was a mess. Not a single game exclusive game I'm interested in and the heavy emphasis on (poor looking) kinect games kept me bored. This was just ok, nothing mind-blowing but just consistent solid stuff that most people expected with a few twists.

I think Nintendo has the possibility to knock it out of the park if they can announce a killer line-up of launch games for Cafe, and maybe announce a round of second generation 3DS games.

I thought that the kinect came into its own this year, and was very impressed by it. The Crytek game looked very interesting, while the implementation with other games (although I dont see why you need Kinect for Mass Effect rather than just a Mic) looked to be heading in the right direction.

The Move game for this was embarasing. The PSV was just worse versions of console games, and I can last long enough to just play them at home. All other games looked to be a mess (Resistance 3... Oh Dear...) and the only good thing was Uncharted.

The TV did look interesting, but that is about it...

(sorry about the bold, cant get rid of it for some reason)

The problem with the MS conference was that almost all of the exclusives or content worthy showcases were tied to the Kinect addon hardware. If the Kinect price comes down by around %30 then it would have been a bit easier to swallow thereby making the games more attractive. MS' strengths in exclusivity mainly lies in XBLA so there were slim chances of a big reveal.

@SuperSambo: You're not joking right? I thought the Kinect stuff looked pretty, well interesting but none of it seemed useful. While the move didn't look any better I at least felt they showed a bunch of games that looked great without it. and Star Wars Kinect looked pretty bad and boring to play and I highly doubt Ryse will look as fluid as they make it out to be (If Kinect Sports Season 2 is any indicator). I'd put Kinect and Move in the same "you should stop now while you can".

The best PS Vita games I've seen are the one's that aren't home console oriented. Sound Shapes, Little Deviants, etc. They also had solid ports that looked to take a console game and make a proper portable version (LBP).  I wouldn't say it's a total wash on the games they've shown, a lot of the software they demoed looked neat.

Ultimately its a difference of opinion but I thought the Microsoft conference was by far the worst.  EA and Sony have been the most interesting so far but that isn't saying much.

Sony had a lot of cool annoucements, probably more than Microsoft, but man their press conferences are SOO BORING!

MS didn't show as much stuff but I was way more excited for what they showed than for Sony stuff. Last minute Halo 4 unveil was great!

For the most part the games looked neat, Uncharted 3 was already getting, kinda eh on Resistance 3, more ehh now, which was disappointing, ecstatic for more Sly.  I was actually surprised that the Vita stuff was what really interested me, and almost makes me want to get it ASAP...almost, but that price makes it a bit more difficult to just say no.   Was disappointed by no crazy out of left field game announcement, but I always kinda am when watching these press conferences.  (of course there is Dust, intrigued by that, but not overly enthused)

I thought the idea of using 3d glasses tech to show 2 players 2 different views was really cool. The 3D bundle is good for people who need to pick up an okay sized HD TV, HDMI, and a great ps3 game all at once. The Sharpshooter bundle was cool too, although I would be worried about Resistance 3  being the game in both.  The games looked great too.
