Gears of War 4 to Release on October 11

An Xbox One beta for the game launches later this month.

Besides the giant storm, one thing to note from the game's cover art is that everyone seems to be a lot less bulky than previous Gears heroes.
Besides the giant storm, one thing to note from the game's cover art is that everyone seems to be a lot less bulky than previous Gears heroes.

Gears of Wars fans eager to see the franchise return on this generation of consoles won't have to wait much longer. Earlier today, Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition announced that the game would release worldwide on October 11, 2016. If you're eager to play before that, there will be multiplayer beta starting on April 18 on Xbox One for players who purchased last year's Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on either Xbox One or PC. That beta will become open to all Xbox Live Gold members on April 25.

Not counting the recent remaster, it's been three years since players last set foot on the planet Sera with Gears of War: Judgment, and five years since they took on the role of Marcus Fenix in the mainline sequel Gears of War 3. Gears 4 sets the action 25 years after the conclusion of the first trilogy and puts the player in the role of Marcus' son, JD.

If developer The Coalition sounds unfamiliar to you, that's probably because the only thing the studio has shipped so far is last year's Gears 1 remaster. That said, early reports speak well to the talent at the team, and it has a direct line of continuity with earlier Gears of War games in the form of Studio Head Rod Fergusson, who was formerly the Director of Production on the Gears series for Epic Games.

Over on Entertainment Weekly, Fergusson debuted the game's cover art and spoke a bit about why the team decided to go in the narrative direction they've chosen with Gears 4:

[We] talked about an alternate planet and let’s go somewhere else. We thought, wow, it would be rough on Sera to get attacked by yet another monster, so maybe we should give them a break and go somewhere else. But then we realized by doing that that we couldn’t harken back to the past. We couldn’t go to places that were familiar, we couldn’t use things, like weapons, that were familiar. Everything would be new. We just felt like the idea of a new cast and a new enemy and a new setting, all of it together was going to be almost too much new. We didn’t have that grounding to what made Gears,Gears.

At the end of the day, we decided, well, why don’t we just advance time and allow ourselves to create a new cast through creating the next generation of hero by having JD Fenix being Marcus’ son and sort of taking up 25 years later.

The full interview really gives a decent amount of insight into the process The Coalition went through in the early stages of development, and provides a little more insight into the direction they're taking the franchise.

I'm curious to see if The Coalition will stick the landing on Gears 4. Taking charge of a beloved franchise from a seasoned developer is a pretty tough challenge, and in some ways it's similar to the job that Halo 4 and 5 developer 343 Industries has had to do. A big difference, though, is that with the second Halo trilogy, 343 decided to further develop familiar and well loved characters in Master Chief and Cortana. The heroes of Gears 4 may have a connection to Marcus Fenix, but The Coalition seems set on telling a fresh story with new faces. It's a goal I totally admire, I just hope that they're able to nail it.

Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that beta access for Gears of War 4 was being made available to those who pre-ordered the game. This has been corrected.

I wasn't too excited when I heard Gears 4 was going to happen. I loved my time with 1-3 and thought that was enough. But after reading the Game Informer story a month or so ago, that perked my interest. And October seems like a good month to release. I hope to hear good things about the beta because I also enjoyed Gears multiplayer. Hopefully you won't need XBL Gold on PC when it's released to play MP.

There's something kinda tragic about that paragraph from EW. "Something new? I'm pretty sure no one would like something new, let's give them everything they already know about, people hate change."

I real missed opportunity to do something new by having the character be related to the original.

I'm excited as Hell for Gears 4 purely because of my love for the franchise in general... but a lot of the ''new'' aspects to the game are looking to basically be a minor spin on old concepts. Main protagonist is the son of the previous protagonist; the new ''swarm'' enemy faction greatly resemble the Locust before them and even use the Hammerburst; the non-COG people of Sera, dubbed 'Outsiders', are essentially the next-generation Stranded from previous Gears games. Nonetheless, more Gears in general sounds good to me, as it's still top dog when it comes to cover-based third-person shooting.

I am really happy to see them consistently reiterating their desire to build on a horror aesthetic, though. It's not going to be scary in the slightest of course, but if they can recapture the dark and moody atmosphere of the original then I'm all for it.

Ge4rs of War, is that better?

I love Gears 1 as much as the next guy. That said, after 2 and 3, I'm not really excited for a Gears 4. Hope its good for the people still hanging in there.

I'd be really surprised if MS is gonna try and pull something like that. Maybe they can delay the PC release (kinda understandable) but needing Gold to play it on PC is going to piss off just about everyone who just plays on PC.

I see your point, but on the flip-side, if they had NEW characters, NEW environments, NEW enemies, and NEW weapons, people would (perhaps justifiably) claim that this game had absolutely nothing to do with previous Ge4rs (hee hee) games, other than the desire to cash-in on that franchises' name.

I'm super hype-torn.

I absolutely loved every second of Gears 1-3 but I also felt that 1-3 nailed the "trilogy" concept so hard that I had no interest in Judgement and don't seem to be feeling much for 4.

...but I want to because of how much I loved 1-3.

@dasakamov: Yeah I understand wanting the sequel to connect somehow to the rest of the series, but reading that they went the ultra-cliche easy route of "you play the child of the last trilogy's main character X years later" seems crazy disappointing. I'm going to guess that the game will actually end up with plenty of new and different stuff, but that snippet from the article just makes it sound like they didn't want to have to think up any new ideas or interesting ways to connect this game to the previous.

Honestly I've never even played through all of a Gears game, but from listening to the Bombcast and seeing opinions on the internet, it seems like people were pretty done with the series when 3 came around, and Judgement was completely unnecessary. It doesn't sound like they're doing much to bring people back on board with this game. We'll see, hopefully it's awesome.

That was Judgment, which was a prequel set before the original Gears.

Is it going to be another "cover based" shooter where multiplayer matches devolve into combat rolls all over the map while spamming hip shot on the gnasher?

Well, since this game is now coming out on PC, they should release GOWs 2, 3, and Judgement in an HD pack or something, so PC players can get the full GOW experience. Might as well, since the Xbox One and Windows 10 have become cross-platform.

It hasn't been completely confirmed that Gears 4 is coming to PC. It's pretty likely mind you, but Rod has only said as far as that it could ''possibly'' come to PC.

I'll be really interested to see if this comes to PC or not. Microsoft can talk big about gaming on Windows 10, but until I see Gears of War and Halo on there I don't believe them. Hopefully they make an announcement soon, because if this is as good as Gears of War 3 then I need to make sure I have a device that can play it.

Why does this announcement get a front page article but the Final Fantasy XV thing didn't get a short summarising piece? I really don't understand where Giant Bomb's view on 'newsworthy' comes from.

@dixavd: The GB team widely loved Horde mode back in the day, I don't remember a single instance of FF being beloved here... so on that end it makes sense to me.

On their podcast they talked about Final Fantasy XV like they weren't interested at all about the Sept 30 release date and were indifferent about the CGI movie and Anime tie-in products. Not saying this was the reason, but if so, then it's not a surprise.

@av_gamer: @murdoc_: I understand that they don't have a high level of interest in FFXV but they've done news announcements for games they aren't particularly into. Similarly, they seem to arbitrarily choose which Nintendo directs to report about as well. Sometimes it feels like they only report on things if it comes through at a time when one of them is awake and paying attention to their emails and/or twitter. It just seems like luck whether something is reported or not.

Honestly, that's probably, more or less, true. That may not be a particularly satisfying answer, but there you have it. I mean, this is not primarily a news site. They do post some news, because... well, I don't really know why. I guess Jeff feels it adds something to the site. But they're definitely not trying to be a Polygon or someplace that posts a lot of news.

And they have one news guy in Austin. Occasionally someone else will post an article, but it's rare and only if they really want to talk about something. So whether something gets posted depends a lot on his availability to write about it, I would assume. If he's out of the office, or busy working on something else, then it's not going to get reported on in 99% of cases.

I don't see what the problem is, and I don't see the same shit being leveled at Uncharted 4 or the Metal Gear Series who pretty much has the same character in all 5 games (Well maybe 2 with Raiden) even though it was supposed to be different people.

They prob don't want the same situation that happened with 343 and Halo, 343 tried to put their own stamp on Halo straight away with their Halo/Cod frankenstienian mash up and they lost half the Halo audience which by all accounts never returned even though IMO Halo 5's mp is some of the best MP ever made.

Plus apart from some minor story setting details and some minor character details there aint the much out there about Gears 4's gameplay and mechanics.

But as usual games writers and haters don't need much excuse these days to shit all over anything if it is remotely related to MS and have such glaring double standards I feel embarrassed for them.

Alex on the beast cast last week was a glaring example of this as he was so negative about Gears then proceeded to talk positively about uncharted which has the same characters and probably a similar plot and similar settings as all the other Uncharted games.

I love both Gears and Uncharted and will be playing both games this year but I do wish the endless MS bashing could at least be toned down a little its getting so very very tiring

I found the contrast between Vinny and Jeff's reaction to the GoW4 info pretty interesting. Personally I find myself in agreement with Vinny that this whole premise sounds like a really bad excuse to reuse the same assets and make exactly the same game they've already made 4 times. It's weird that Jeff was so down on the ultimate edition release of GoW on Xbox One because "the gears of war formula doesn't hold up" but he's excited by the news that they're sticking with exactly the same formula for the new one? I suspect it will shape up to be another shallow sequel much like Halo 5, at least in terms of the campaign.
