Blue Team in action.

Halo 5: Guardians is a sci-fi first-person shooter developed by 343 Industries and published by Microsoft for the Xbox One on October 27, 2015.

The eighth installment of the Halo franchise (and the first developed specifically for the Xbox One), Guardians is the second in the "Reclaimer trilogy" and features improved co-op campaign support, new multiplayer features, and a reworked game engine.

The game's story follows two squads of SPARTAN super-soldiers: Blue Team (a group of veteran SPARTAN-II's led by Master Chief) and Fireteam Osiris (a group of high-tech SPARTAN-IV's led by Jameson Locke) eight months after the events of Halo 4. When Master Chief receives a cryptic message from his former A.I. companion Cortana (who is believed to have been destroyed), Blue Team becomes AWOL to investigate. In retaliation, the UNSC Infinity sends Fireteam Osiris to bring them in.

The game later received a limited port by SkyBox Labs to the PC on September 8, 2016. Released digitally via Windows Store for free as Halo 5: Forge, this version only includes the Forge and Custom Games modes and is not cross-compatible.

Owners of Halo: The Master Chief Collection were given access to a multiplayer beta of the game from December 29, 2014 to January 22, 2015.

Gameplay

Campaign

During the campaign playing will be taking over Chief's team, known as Blue Team, which is composed of legendary Spartan II's Kelly-087, Linda-058 and Frederic-104 or Locke's team, Fireteam Osiris, which is made up of high-tech Spartan IV's, including Edward Buck. A player, if playing alone, can issue orders to these AI controlled teammates. Commands including, highlighting and issuing an assault on enemies, picking up certain weapons, controlling turrets and driving vehicles. During online cooperative play, players will take on the role of the Spartan teammates, each with their own unique traits. If a player is downed during battle, teammates can revive them by standing over them and initiating a revive animation.

Weapons

In addition, carryable objectives in certain Multiplayer modes (such as balls and flags) can be used to pummel enemies with melee attacks.

Human Weapons

  • Assault Rifle - A fully-automatic assault rifle useful for short-to-medium ranged combat. Default weapon in Multiplayer. Formally known as the "MA5D Individual Combat Weapon System".
  • Magnum - A semi-automatic handgun useful for short-to-medium ranged combat. Default weapon in Multiplayer. Formally known as the "M6H2 Personal Defense Weapon System". An alternate classic version, known as the "Halo: Combat Evolved Pistol" or "M6D Personal Defense Weapon System" can be found in Multiplayer.
  • Battle Rifle - A battle rifle with a three-round burst and a scope attachment (supporting 2x magnification) useful for medium-to-long ranged combat. Can be unlocked as default weapons in Warzone. Formally known as the "BR85N SR Battle Rifle". An alternate classic version, known as the "Halo 2 Battle Rifle" or "BR55 Battle Rifle" can be found in Multiplayer.
  • DMR - A semi-automatic marksman rifle with a scope attachment (supporting 3x magnification), useful for medium-to-long ranged combat. Can be unlocked as default weapons in Warzone. Formally known as the "M395B Designated Marksman Rifle".
  • SMG - A fully-automatic sub-machine gun useful for short-to-medium ranged combat. Can be unlocked as default weapons in Warzone. Formally known as the "M20 Personal Defense Weapon".
  • Shotgun - A pump-action shotgun that is deadly in close-ranged combat. Formally known as the "M45D Tactical Shotgun".
  • SAW - A light machine gun very useful for suppression and close-ranged combat. Formally known as the "M739 Light Machine Gun".
  • Sniper Rifle - A semi-automatic sniper rifle (with an electronic scope that supports both 5x and 10x magnification) that is deadly in long-ranged combat. Formally known as the "SRS99-S5 AM Sniper Rifle".
  • Spartan Laser - A large weapon that fires a very powerful long-ranged laser beam that can cut through multiple enemies and deal heavy damage to vehicles. Each beam must be charged fully (which takes roughly 2-3 seconds), in which the weapon emits a loud sound and shines a red targeting laser. It cannot be replenished by picking up ammo (and must be dropped after being depleted) and fires up to four shots. Formally known as the "M6/E Grindell/Galilean Nonlinear Rifle".
  • Railgun - A weapon that fires a quick-moving high-explosive grenade. Like the Spartan Laser, it requires a charging phase (which is shorter, quieter, and does not have a targeting laser, but noticably glows blue). Formally known as the "Asymmetric Recoilless Carbine-920".
  • Grenade Launcher - Replaces the Sticky Detonator. Formally known as the "M319 Individual Grenade Launcher".
  • Rocket Launcher - A powerful rocket launcher with a scope attachment (supporting 2x magnification). Formally known as the "M57 Pilum Assault Weapon". An alternate classic version, known as the "SPNKr Rocket Launcher" or "M41 SSR MAV/AW" can be found in Multiplayer.
  • Hydra Launcher - New to the series. Formally known as the "MLRS-1 Hydra Gyroc Launcher".
  • Frag Grenade - A standard timed fragmentation grenade with a three-second fuse. Can bounce off of surfaces. Default grenade type in Multiplayer. Formally known as the "M9 High-Explosive Dual-Purpose Grenade".

Covenant Weapons

  • Plasma Pistol - A semi-automatic energy-blasting firearm that, while generally weak in short blasts, can be overcharged (by holding down the Fire button over time) into a larger superheated bolt that automatically locks onto enemy infantry (draining their shields) or enemy vehicles (causing the vehicle to become inactive for a short time). It does not require reloading, and cannot be replenished by picking up ammo. Formally known as the "Type-54D Directed Energy Pistol".
  • Storm Rifle - A fully-automatic energy-blasting weapon (similar to the Plasma Rifle from previous games) useful for close-to-medium ranged combat. Continuously firing causes the weapon to overheat, in which the weapon must enter a cooldown phase. It does not require reloading, and cannot be replenished by picking up ammo. Formally known as the "Type-55 Directed Energy Rifle".
  • Brute Plasma Rifle - Can be found in Multiplayer. Formally known as the "Type-25 Directed Energy Rifle/Jiralhanae Variant".
  • Carbine - A semi-automatic marksman rifle with a scope attachment (supporting 2x magnification). Firing a powerful green blast useful for medium-to-long ranges, it becomes more inaccurate in quick blasts. Formally known as the "Type-57B Carbine".
  • Needler - A fully-automatic projectile weapon that rapidly fires sharp purple crystalline shards. These shards lock on to enemies, impales them (dealing some damage), and detonate harmlessly after some time. However, seven or more impalements at one time causes all of them to detonate powerfully (known as a super-charge), killing that enemy. Formally known as the "Type-56D Guided Munitions Launcher".
  • Beam Rifle - A semi-automatic energy-blasting equivalent of a sniper rifle with a scope attachment (supporting both 5x and 10x magnification). It does not require reloading, but can overheat if continuously fired (in which it must enter a cooldown phase). It also cannot be replenished by picking up ammo. Formally known as the "Type-27 Special Application Sniper Rifle". An alternate classic version, known as the "Halo 2 Beam Rifle" or "Type-50 Sniper Rifle System" can be found in Multiplayer.
  • Plasma Launcher - Formally known as the "Type-52 Guided Munitions Launcher/Explosive".
  • Plasma Caster - New to the series. Formally known as the "Type-53 Plasma Bolt Launcher".
  • Fuel Rod Gun - An energy-blasting equivalent of a rocket launcher. It does not deal as much damage as the Rocket Launcher, but each clip contains more explosive blasts. Formally known as the "Type-58 Light Anti-Armor Weapon".
  • Energy Sword - A sword composed of glowing energy that is devastating for close-ranged combat. The Melee button performs a normal slash while the Fire button either performs another normal slash or, if the player's crosshair is over a close enemy, performs a lunging slash. The sword loses its energy after striking any surface. Formally known as the "Type-1 Energy Weapon/Sword".
  • Gravity Hammer - Can be found in Multiplayer. Formally known as the "Type-2 Energy Weapon/Hammer".
  • Plasma Grenade - A timed energy grenade that sticks to surfaces (including enemies and vehicles). Unlike the Frag Grenade, the three-second fuse occurs after the grenade sticks to a surface. Formally known as the "Type-1 Antipersonnel Grenade".

Forerunner Weapons

  • Suppressor - A fully-automatic hard light weapon useful for close-to-medium ranged combat. Formally known as the "Z-130 Directed Energy Automatic Weapon".
  • Boltshot - A hard light firearm with a three-round burst useful for close-to-medium ranged combat. Formally known as the "Z-110 Directed Energy Pistol".
  • Lightrifle - A semi-automatic hard light rifle useful for medium-to-long ranges. Formally known as the "Z-250 Directed Energy Engagement Weapon".
  • Scattershot - A hard light equivalent of a shotgun, firing multiple bolts (per blast) that can bounce off surfaces and deal great damage at close range. Formally known as the "Z-180 Close Combat Rifle".
  • Binary Rifle - A semi-automatic hard light equivalent of a sniper rifle that sacrifices magazine size for incredible long-ranged power (allowing players in multiplayer to kill other players, anywhere in the body, with one shot). Supports both 4x and 9x magnification. Formally known as the "Z-750 Special Application Sniper Rifle".
  • Incineration Cannon - A highly-dangerous hard light equivalent of a rocket launcher, launching a powerful short-ranged munition that, when exploded, separates into four less-powerful munitions slightly outward. Formally known as the "Z-390 High-Explosive Munitions Rifle".
  • Splinter Grenade - New to the series, replacing the Pulse Grenade. Releases multiple "splinters" which explode on contact with enemies. Formally known as the "Z-400 Pursuit Disruption Grid Generator".

Spartan Abilities

The new Ground Pound ability.
The new Ground Pound ability.

The spiritual successor to Armor Abilities from Halo: Reach and Halo 4, all players have full access to special "Spartan Abilities" that allows them to improve their maneuverability using their Spartan's M-050978 Thruster Pack (or T-PACK).

In Multiplayer, these abilities can be disabled.

  • Thruster - Allows them to dash in any given direction by pressing the Thruster Pack button. Players have a four-second cooldown after using this ability.
  • Sprint - Allows them to run faster than normal by pressing the Left Stick while moving. While it can be used indefinitely, players cannot recharge their health or shields while sprinting.
  • Ground Pound - Allows them to launch themselves at the ground to perform a powerful shockwave attack by holding down the Melee Attack button while in mid-air. This can also be used to destroy weakened floors.
  • Charge - Allows them to perform a powerful shoulder bash attack by pressing the Melee Attack button while sprinting, This can also be used to destroy weakened walls.
  • Clamber - Allows them to double-jump up to a ledge by pressing the Jump button while near that ledge.
  • Stabilizer - Allows them to hover in the air for a limited time by aiming down-the-sight in mid-air.
  • Slide - Allows them to perform a knee-slide by pressing the Crouch button while sprinting at top speed.

Multiplayer

Halo 5: Guardian's multiplayer will run on dedicated servers to ensure the best connections possible. It features returning game modes as well as new game types. Multiplayer in Halo 5 can support up to 24 players over Xbox Live. The game features a skill-based matchmaking system, here players are rated into seven tiers of skill level. This system is based on wins and loses. Winning games will increase one's rank, while losing decreases it.

Gametypes

  • Warzone - A brand new game mode introduced in Halo 5. While not a replacement for Big Team Battle, Warzone features large-scale multiplayer gameplay, with up to 24-player support. This mode features both PvP (Player vs. Player), as well as PvE (Player vs. Environment). This includes A.I.-driven Covenant and Forerunner foes.
  • Breakout - 4v4 fast-paced multiplayer mode introduced in Halo 5. This mode pits 2 teams of 4 against each other in a small, closed maps. Spartans spawn with a pistol and an SMG but no shield. The TTK (Time to kill) in the mode is short, leading to intense showdowns. The objective is to eliminate the enemy team, or carry the flag found at the center of the map over to the objective.
