GoldenEye 007: Reloaded's Paintball Mode Isn't Just a Pre-Order Incentive

Fears of modes being locked away behind specific retailers are unfounded.

Paintball mode can be flipped on in both single and multiplayer. One of my favorites.
Paintball mode can be flipped on in both single and multiplayer. One of my favorites.

When Activision issued a press release about pre-order incentives for the upcoming GoldenEye 007: Reloaded, my eyebrows raised a bit. Like most games these days, it would come with pre-order incentives.

Specifically, GameStop's pre-order incentive would be the game's infamous paintball mode, a cherished option (especially in multiplayer) from the original game. The idea that players would be forced to purchase from a specific retailer to tap into their nostalgia sounded suspect.

This was the confusing quote in question:

Starting today, fans can pre-order GoldenEye 007: Reloaded at GameStop to receive a unique exclusive code to unlock the Paintball Mode Modifier in Split-screen and Online private multiplayer matches. This fan-favorite modifier causes bullets to leave behind paint splats on walls and surfaces all across the map. Additionally, they'll receive early access into the Classic Conflict Mode in Online public and private multiplayer modes.

Fortunately, everything's in the clear. These pre-order incentives simply unlock modes early.

"If you don’t pre-order the game from GameStop you’ll still be able to play the Paintball mode, but you’ll need to unlock it by progressing through the game," said an Activision representative to me today.

That should apply to the other pre-order incentives, as well.

It almost feels better this way, anyway. Paintball wasn't a freebie in GoldenEye, remember?

Complete Dam on Secret Agent in 2:40 or less.

Getting that one was simple. I don't think my friends and I ever unlocked Invinsibility, which required this:

Complete Facility on 00 Agent in 2:05 or less.

Just thinking about that one's giving me nightmares again.

I went to Amazon because I haven't seen a sight of this game ever....

Did you guys know it is $60 dollars on the listing?

I would have a really hard time paying that price for this game. I read the article under the assumption that maybe it was a $20 dollar downloadable title along the lines of Resident Evil 4.....maybe some sort of licensing issue has forced the publisher to jack up the price and avoid diminishing returns?

Ew.....too much......

No, no, the point lies in the value of a remake like that. You tell me why the updated framerate of a port of a Wii game that remade Goldeneye is worth it. You tell me why I should pay $60 dollars for that.....

Nice to see Patrick waiting and getting official comment before throwing up a story. I saw a few too many sites claiming that it was an exclusive to the store, not an early unlock.

Wow, that's disappointing. This was the crown achievement for our generation (I'm 28) and my buddy and I both nailed it. You would become amazing at detonating remote mines in soldier's faces, and if the scientist wasn't in the first room on the right (location was random) you restarted the mission. Man that was awesome.

We played this game a lot of N64 when it came out, like a lot of other people. In fact, we made a game mode we called 'Storm the Shitter' in which we would play with Golden Gun (which would always spawn in the bathroom). The way the game worked was that 3 of us worked together to take down the guy who would defend, well, the shitter armed with his GG. This required some teamwork. But, once the GG guy was killed, it became a free-for-all to see who would survive and be the next to wield the gun and defend the bathroom.

I suspect we weren't unique in developing this game play, but we had a blast with it. I don't think it would be able to conjure up the same enjoyment we had back in the day with a new game, but I would consider it.

I remember unlocking everything in Goldeneye. The payoff was worth it. Being able to mess with the Enemy AI slider was great. So cranking them all the way up and with Max dmg and Max spawn and just TRYING to make it out of the bathroom was more funny then it needed to be.

Also, wtf is this Goldeneye:007 reloaded? I thought they couldn't make a remake of the original without some legal mumbo jumbo with nintendo and rare or EA or who-ever owns what now with that game. Unless it has become public domain.

EDIT: Oh okay On further inspection it seams it's just the remake of the re imagining of the original and not like a proper do over of the actual original n64 game. Well, bummer. Also, it seams to be that these are loafers.

It's cool that most companies are allowing you to buy or unlock pre-order bonuses now.

If they had a disco mode or big head mode in goldeneye i'd be on board.

It's that "reimagining" of the original that Activision made last year for the Wii. It's just a version of that for Xbox 360 and PS3 with better graphics and some new missions. I think they're just doing this because... well, you gotta use that 007 license, right?

Still, like many people say, even a faithful remake of the original would not be THAT Goldeneye that everybody loves. That game is gone.

Yes. This attitude of, "If it came out on the Wii then they should give it to me for next to nothing on the other systems because it's wii garbage" is horseshit. Goldeneye was a full fledged $50 wii AAA game. If you had bothered to play it then you would know that it was a well made FPS that was just as long, or longer, then the other FPS offerings that year. So bringing it in to the current gen and adding features should warrant a current gen price. Just because it was on the wii doesn't mean that it should be a 10 dollar downloadable every where else just because it had the audacity to be on the Wii first. By that logic, wii owners should have been able to get CoD4 for 20 bucks when that came out.

I played this game as well. I played it with my friends that don't really play video games and only own a wii and they thought it was amazing and raved about it. All this despite them not being able to navigate the menus with the controller, let alone aim in the game.

That was probably the most glaring issue that game had going for it, you can't really blame the developer for shitty hardware. At the end of the day when this game comes to the other console it will probably handle like a CoD game. Whether that's good or bad is up to you. I personally don't like any of the CoD games because of the speed and pacing of combat.  (I'm more of an old school FPS player and need my MP to be very fast pace (Quake, UT, etc...))  I just can't see myself playing much of this if it plays at all like CoD.

Okay you have me there. I had heard something about new modes, and there is extra Mi6 co-op missions or something, but not enough new content. I still don't agree to it being a $20 game though. I think on this case $40 would have made the most sense. Especially people like me who would have double dipped to be able to play a better looking versions of the game with friends.

Completing the Facility on 00 Agent in 2:05 or less was one of my prouder accomplishments. It's a lot of running and lot of hope. Since you don't have time to actually fight anyone you have the entire facility's compliment of guards chasing you down by the end.

Ah, good times.

Absolutely loved paintball mode in the original. Somehow they just scored themselves a new customer (after a price drop of course).
